Curly & The Balloon, And Other Oddball Things
ccthemovieman-18 February 2007
This Three Stooges "movie" is broken into three segments: 1 - a newspaper man goes to interview a "Professor Denkfeather," who is a "special investigator. He tells the story of the three "heroes;" 2 - The boys are seen as door-to-door salesmen, selling "reducing machines" to housewives; and 3 - the wind up at a deserted house miles away but three spies, dressed in costumes, try to scare them off.

Everyone is very odd in this film. The investigator is very weird and is the man behind the big question of "Who threw those pies?" The women that the Stooges encounter while trying to see their wares. Finally, the owner of the house where the spies are hiding outside, dressed as a skeleton, the Devil, and just some dark-clothed-hairy monster.

This is one of those episodes - as are a few others in this DVD of the same title ("Spook Louder" - in which only the last 4-6 involve what the title implies. The best comedy bit was with Curly and the balloon inadvertently attached to the back of his sport coat. The reactions on Curly's face are what help make him a comic genius.

Overall, a decent Stooges effort but not as good as advertised.

" I can't stand it anymore! Who threw those pies?"
thejcowboy2226 September 2016
I recall an extremely cold February afternoon. I went over to Freddie's house to mess around and read the playboy magazines his Father has stashed away. Obviously Freddie's folks went to some party and we thought the house was ours but to our surprise Freddie's Mom at the last minute hired a baby sitter to watch his two younger siblings. The babysitter wasn't very friendly and wanted to corner the only color set in the living room. We were mad that she took over our territory so we went outside and decided to harass her. Throwing crab apples on the roof and ringing the front door bell while hiding in the adjacent bushes. Just an all out onslaught against the helpless sitter. SPOOK LOUDER is definitely my favorite of all the Three Stooges shorts. Our story begins with what appears to be a young impressionable reporter (Stanley Brown) hearing a tale about three master salesman (The Stooges) peddling a weight reduction machine to would be house wives from the lips of Professor Dunkfeather (Lew Kelly) narration. The deplorable Professor is interrupted by the inquiring hack as to what does selling a weight machine have to do with the story? Our eccentric story teller continues spinning a goofy yarn how our Three Stooges stumble upon a mansion. They meet the owner of this spacious dwelling Inventor deluxe,Mr. Graves (Theodore Lorch) as they are instantly hired as caretakers. While the inventor Mr. Graves has to travel to Washington. Foul play ensues outside unbeknownst to the three newly hires. The foils enter the house in Halloween garb and try to scare off Moe Larry and Curly. Chase scenes, balloons, prat falls and plenty of pies get thrown at crucial parts of this comedy. Just a funny collection of non- stop comedy only the Stooges could provide. Plenty of belly laughs in this unforgettable short. I grade this 8 nyuk nyuks. Who threw those pies? I threw the crab apples!

Pretty dopey....which is what fans want.
planktonrules13 July 2018
The Stooges are hired by a wacky professor to watch his mansion. He apparently is working on a death ray and is worried the Japanese* want to steal it. As soon as he leaves, all sorts of weirdness happen in the place...with someone trying to scare them off by dressing like a skeleton and more. And, oddly, throughout the film pies come flying from out of nowhere! It's all very goofy and silly...which is exactly what most Three Stooges fans love. While it is far from being an intellectual film, it does have its moments.

By the way, if you do watch this one, note the butler. He's played by Charles Middleton--the same tall guy who was Ming the Merciless in the Buck Rogers serials.

*First, the US was at war with the Germans, Japanese and Italians....so why worry just about the Japanese? Second, politically correct sorts won't like the use of the term 'Japs'...which is used repeatedly.

My favorite Stooge flick!
Idiot-Deluxe25 December 2015
" Who, threw those pies? "

Here we have the episode SPOOK LOUDER, quite a unique and unusually structured short. Having seen it dozens of times over many years, this one for me has unlimited replay value and I rate it as their funniest short. Zany and riotous from beginning to end, LOTS OF LAUGHS are promised. SPOOK LOUDER was filmed in 42', which for me, finds the boys at the peak of their artistic powers. Possessing great vitality and pace and containing numerous unexpected twists, turns and segues SPOOK LOUDER is OMNIPOTENT STOOGERY at it's zany best. Chocked full of sight-jags at every turn, the boys are on edge and running scared through most of it. So what else, oh yeah, the beloved and quite hilarious "balloon gag" is my favorite part - you'll see. Just fun, fun, fun - a marvelous way to spend 16 minutes of your time.

To the would-be buyers and Stooge-Newbies out there, the Sony DVD box-sets are all you need, when putting together a Three Stooges video library; they simply look and sound the best.

Side-note: SPOOK LOUDER easily takes the award for MESSIEST PIES! Including a spectacular triple pie-throw near the end.

The Stooges can do no wrong!
Raine-810 June 2002
The 3 Stooges (no matter what the trio consisted of) were some of the most gifted actors/comedians ever to hit the silver screen and this short is all the proof I need. Related in flashback, the Stooges are travelling salesmen who are rejected by one homeowner after another until they finally come across a spooky inventor's mansion who enlists them to keep an eye on the place while he steps out. No sooner do the Stooges agree when a group of spies break in disguised as frightening spooks. Each hair-raising (and hilarious) encounter the Stooges experience tops the other and the action hits its peak with its explosive, bomb-throwing (and pie throwing) finale. Fans take note: Curly is also at his funniest in this short particularly when he takes down the morse code message (Moe: "What'd it say?" Curly: "Eh-eh-eh-eh-eh...."). Another Stooges short guaranteed to have their fans rolling in the aisles!

Some Pretty Good Laughs

Spook Louder (1943)

*** (out of 4)

A reporter goes to interview Professor Dunkfeather (Lew Kelly) who tells him about two separate cases, all involving the Stooges. One involves the boys going around trying to sell weight reducing machines. The next has the boys inside a spooky house where a skeleton, a devil and another man tries to scare them.

SPOOK LOUDER isn't the greatest short in the world but there's no doubt that fans of the Stooges should enjoy what humor there is. I'd say the weakest stuff deals with the Dunkfeather character as there's really no humor to be found here. The first story contains a couple decent laughs but the highlight is certainly when the three manage to finally get a buyer only to have Curly mess it up. The majority of the laughs come from the second portion of the film as the boys are running around scared of just about everything that jumps out at them. There are some really funny moments to be found here including one where Curly keeps getting punch by someone behind a book shelf.

Scary Fun Warning: Spoilers
"Spook Louder" was originally released back in 1943.

Anyway - As the story goes - A mysterious pie-thrower is the least of the Stooges' worries when they are hired to guard an inventor's haunted mansion from spies, who arrive disguised as monsters.

Who threw that pie?
BlackSabbath8 March 2000
"Professor I can't stand it any longer! Who threw that pie?!" You'll be asking yourself this same question while watching this great slice of comic mayhem. The Stooges are key figures in the breaking up of the Great Spy Ring in this short. But they are not spies. They are just simple salesmen who wander into horror, hell, and very funny situations. After assigned as bodyguards to a professor's house the boys meet up with skeletons, mummies, strange sounds, U.F.P's (unidentified flying pies) and the Devil?! Great piece of mystery/silliness that has it all. Look closely for Charles Middleton (Emperor Ming of the 1930's Flash Gordon serials.

THE PERFECT STOOGE COMEDY!!! AMEN!
tcchelsey5 June 2022
The Stooges land in a haunted house where ghosts are throwing pies! This has got to be the most insane comedy they have ever done! I have watched this for years as a kid, and now as an adult I am still laughing as it is sooo outrageous! Lew Kelly as the nutty professor (Dunkfeather!) tells a reporter the weird tale of how "strange things" were happening in his house. The bad guys, all dressed in Halloween costumes, make it more hilarious as Moe, Larry and Curly are scared out of their wits in almost every scene. Curly steals the show (doesn't he always?) thinking a balloon on a string attached to his coat is a mad ghoul. The face on the balloon is a hoot! There's a lot of running around and yelling and it's so much fun to watch. WATCH OUT FOR THE FLYING PIES!!! Recommended for Stooge addicts, and you will be addicted! Get the dvd box set.

Neither spooky nor funny really
Horst_In_Translation10 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"Spook Louder" is an American 16-minute live action short film from 1943, so this one has its 75th anniversary next year already. If you read that Lord and Bruckman made this and see that it is a 16-minute live action short film, then maybe you guess correctly already that this is one of the many Three Stooges short films. It is none of their most or least known I would say. It is from the days of WWII, but there are no real anti-Hitler references in here like in some other Stooges works, but early on there is a mention of war bonds which makes for a nice reference about the global political climate back then. Other than that, I found it to be a really forgettable work to be honest. The salesmen part was as uninteresting as the caretaker part later on, the core of the film, and the idea of how the whole thing was basically narrated by a non-Stooge character from his memory was as uninteresting as all the pie-throwing scenes. This one still has Curly in it, even if it is certainly not from the trio's very early days. Overall, it's highly unlikely you will watch this one without having seen any other Stooges films and the core of the comedy is really their usual slapstick routine, so you can decide for yourself judging from the way you perceived other Stooges (short) films if you want to check this one out. It also should not surprise anybody that it is all about the comedy here, never about horror really, even if it receives a boost in popularity every year during Halloween I guess. So yeah, this slightly-over-a-quarter-of-an-hour film gets a thumbs-down from me. Not recommended.

A mystery involving pies!
slymusic10 September 2007
Warning: Spoilers
"Spook Louder" is a fairly good Three Stooges comedy directed by Del Lord. This film is unique in that the Stooges are seen entirely in flashback. Moe, Larry, and Curly are salesmen mistaken for caretakers, and when they spend the night at the home of the famous inventor Mr. Graves (Ted Lorch), things become spookier than expected!

Highlights: Curly transcribes a Morse code signal and reads it (literally) to Moe. While the Stooges are about to sell one of their phony reducing machine inventions to a lady (Symona Boniface), Curly removes a post allowing an awning to spill a heap of rainwater onto the furious customer, prompting the boys to make a hasty escape. Curly reacts in horror to a balloon with an ugly face drawn on it. A revolving bookcase causes some trouble for Curly and Moe.

"Spook Louder" is not the greatest of the Three Stooges shorts with spooky premises, but it is still good. I won't reveal the mystery of who threw the pies in this short, but you can be certain that the culprit who did throw them gets a dose of his own medicine!
