Victory Through Air Power

Written by Perce Pearce, T. Hee, Erdman Penner, William Cottrell, James Brodero, George Stallings, Jose Rodriguez
Starring Alexander P. de Seversky, Art Baker
Watching Victory Through Air Power in 2012 is akin to being given a glimpse into a parallel universe. Because of how protective the Walt Disney Company is of its history and legacy, and what people know of that history and legacy, the period in which they worked almost solely at creating propaganda of various types for the United States government isn’t as frequently discussed as their work on films like Bambi, Dumbo, or the package films of the 1940s. The very idea of propaganda is so different now than it was 70 years ago that being confronted by a more direct, adult, and dry version of patriotism is startling. Watching any film...

With Independence Day right around the corner, the new episode of Mousterpiece Cinema celebrates a part of the Walt Disney Company’s history all about protecting America. Though you may not be as familiar with the period when Walt Disney and his animators worked on wartime propaganda, there was a time when Disney focused more on convincing America to get involved in the World War II effort instead of entertaining mass audiences with fairy tales. This week, Josh and Gabe are joined by Michael Crawford from Progress City, U.S.A. to discuss the pinnacle of Disney’s propaganda, the full-length feature Victory Through Air Power. This hybrid of live-action and animation features a dry Russian narrator, an animated history of aviation, and an eagle pounding the life out of an octopus! Even if you haven’t seen the film, this episode is a can’t-miss affair, with discussions of Disney history,...

Veteran animator who contributed to every aspect of Disney's output for 42 years
When the veteran animator Bill Justice, who has died aged 97, applied for a job at the Disney studio in 1937, it was on the basis of a 30-day "try-out"; he remained there for the next 42 years, contributing to every facet of Disney's output, from feature films and short cartoons to TV shows and theme park attractions.
Justice was born in Dayton, Ohio, and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he attended the John Herron Art Institute (now a school of Indiana University) to study portrait painting. In 1937, in the midst of the Great Depression, he responded to a Disney recruiting advertisement in Esquire magazine and gave up the weekly income of $65 he was then earning in order to work at Hollywood's most famous cartoon studio, for $12 a week. He began as an "in-betweener" on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs...

In the course of writing lists or features, it's frequently occurred to myself and other writers to upload a clip from a movie to YouTube, by way of illustrating a point - and embedding it in the article. How often this goes through smoothly and how often it doesn't has become quite interesting in the last few years.
After uploading a short clip from The Exorcist to illustrate an entry in Top 10 most frightening sounds in movies, I was met with the familiar legend Video blocked in some countries text, next to the video in question...
The 'View Copyright Info' link indicated that the uploaded video had been content-matched using YouTube's Content ID tool, and was blocked either worldwide or in enough countries as to make the inclusion of the video-embed undesirable.
[ Interestingly there appears to actually be no 'blocked' icon at YouTube in such cases. Instead there is the 'world' icon sitting next to the word 'Public' - even when the 'some countries' that the video is blocked in transpire to be 'every country on Earth'. Maybe you can watch such a video off-world..? ]
Unusually, I didn't bother to delete the now-useless (except for my own personal viewing) video, and chanced to...

Last week we posted a video which Disney created counting down all fifty of their animated films in celebration of the release of Tangled and our very own Justine Smith posted an article of her five favorite Disney animated features. However what should be noted is that Tangled is actually Disney’s 51st animated feature. The missing film in the video is the 70 minute long animated documentary Victory Through Air Power, promoting of the soundness of strategic aerial bombing in World War II.
It may not by a fairy tale nor a narrative feature but it is still an interesting look at the history of a major film studio. Adapted from a book by Alexander P. de Seversky, this 1943 picture is the most unusual feature film Walt Disney ever made. a film meant to send a message rather than entertain. It has not been seen theatrically since, though portions of...

Chances are that you stumbled upon a video recently where Disney paraded their animated films from 1 to 50 in celebration of the release of Tangled. You might have marveled at the pristine quality of Snow White or clutched at your chest in childlike wonderment at the Lion King’s roar. You might have even had a flood of childhood memories wash over you like the sun on a cold day. There’s something to be applauded in creating their 50th animated feature film, but Disney is celebrating a little bit late because there’s one movie that’s missing from that video roster. The missing movie is Victory Through Air Power, and it makes sense that it wasn’t included in the video. It’s not the typical fairy tale. It’s not even a narrative feature. It’s a documentary about flight and fighting meant to sway the minds of the powers that be in 1943. Plus, there...
