Ditzy young thing runs off and gets mixed up with a reporter
misterbee-15 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I had never heard of this movie until recently it was shown on Turner Classic Movie channel. I watched it because the breath-takingly pretty Ann Miller was the star.

Anyway, after watching for a while, something became familiar - it has the very same plot line as "It Happened One Night" with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. THis movie even had the Roscoe Karns character. Basically, only the names were changed.

All in all I liked the movie. So what did I like about it? Good acting, good writing, and Ann Miller - you don't need anything else. Even though it was a remake of another film, Ann Miller is always a joy to watch.

It IS a remake of IHON!!!
paul-20812 April 2008
Poor Ann Miller . . . what was she thinking when she wanted to headline, instead of co-star, in a flick? Not content with being one of M-G-M's sturdy, yeoman supporting players, she somehow opted for this Columbia remake of It Happened One Night . . .and for that one commenter who opined, " . . . probably the original was better!" he/she needs to take Classic Hollywood Films 101 and brush up on one of the great comedies of all time. And turning that magnificent film into a musical really is someone's idea of a joke. The remake of THIS "musical," You Can't Run Away from It, is hardly any better; that is unless you like the warbling and mugging of June Allyson. Skip this one . . . William Wright is really a poverty-stricken excuse for Clark Gable and who can come close to to matching the comedic talents of Claudette Colbert? The original IHON swept the Oscars in 1935; the crew on this one is just possibly capable of sweeping the floor! . . . and WHO dubbed Ann Miller's voice?

It happened to Annie!
mark.waltz16 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
A slight variation on the plot of It Happened one Night, this B musical is a chance to see Ann Miller in a mostly comic role with a few songs. Instead of an heiress however, she is a radio star desperate for a vacation who runs out on her agent and end up traveling with reporter William Wright who happens to think that she is a murderess. Sound like a plot line from I Love Lucy with guest star Elsa Lanchester? I wonder if that plot was borrowed from this, because it's closer to that more than it is the 1934 Oscar winning Best Film.

Annie doesn't do much dancing here, and her singing while obviously her isn't as brassy as its was in other movies and particularly later on Broadway.at over just an hour running time, the speeds by like a night on the road, and it was perfectly charming. Annie would have better luck on Silman supporting roles in the big MGM musicals, but during her brief time as a leading lady at Columbia, she proved that she was a Alltalent to be reckoned with. Don't even try to compare Annie and Wright to Colbert and Gable, as they give this enough of a twist to make it stand out on its own.

It Happened One ... Eve?
crispy_comments4 January 2007
What's this? Ann Miller playing a singer (with vocals obviously dubbed, I've heard her singing voice in MGM musicals, and this ain't it) instead of a dancer? Seems like an odd casting choice. She plays a runaway singing star on a wacky road trip with a reporter who's initially only interested in her for the story/reward money, but (I trust I'm not spoiling anything here, as the outcome is very predictable) ultimately falls in love.

Sound familiar? Substitute "singing star" with "heiress" and you've got the basic premise of "It Happened One Night"... minus Frank Capra's directorial magic, Robert Riskin's witty script, and charismatic stars like Gable & Colbert.

If you've never seen "It Happened One Night"... go see it first! But if you happen to see "Eve Knew Her Apples" first... just don't, okay!? But if you *do*, you might find it a pleasant diversion. Fans of the far superior film will probably feel nothing but dismay and disgust.

How blatant are the thefts? In the end, Ann Miller's character dumps her wealthy fiancé, and William Wright, when questioned as to whether he loves her, steals Clark Gable's line, "YES! But don't hold that against me, I'm a little screwy myself!"

Oh my. Such direct theft only invites unfavorable comparisons. And Wright is NO Gable. I'm amazed the writers of "It Happened One Night" weren't given any credit here. Perhaps they were indignant and didn't want to be associated with a tacky rip-off of their classic? Perhaps Columbia simply felt entitled, since this studio released both films. But there's a reason nobody's heard of "Eve Knew Her Apples".

I could make some cracks about studio heads being such SNAKES, and how SINful it is to produce a cheap imitation that taints a beloved classic - but you get the idea.

Eve Knew Her Apples (1945)

** 1/2 (out of 4)

Lighthearted remake of Frank Capra's It Happened One Night has a famous singer (Ann Miller) running away only to be picked up by a man (William Wright) who she doesn't know is a reporter. This is pretty much a scene by scene remake of the Capra film but it removes a lot of footage and just mainly copies the most famous scenes. There's nothing overly funny about this comedy and Ann Miller is a complete bore but fans of the previous film will be slightly entertained by seeing that film redone. Wright certainly steals the show and makes for several nice moments but the screenplay really doesn't allow him to do too much. The film runs a short 64-minutes and goes pretty quickly throughout.

This Apple Falls Very Far From the Tree
wes-connors22 August 2007
Ann Miler (as Eve) is a popular radio singer who wants to vacation after a successful season; but, her handlers want her to film a movie. She leaves anyway; then, her handlers give chase, forcing the star to hide out with William Wright (as Ward), a traveling newspaperman. A series of misunderstandings threaten their chance for romance.

This film was re-made as "You Can't Run Away From It" (1956). It does compare favorably to that version; I think the situation works better in an older, black and white film from ten years earlier… and, this version is a re-make of an even earlier version, "It Happened One Night". This one, "Eve Knew Her Apples" is really just okay. Ms. Miller is pretty. The production is weak, with the editing its most obvious distraction.

Audacious Remake
rgoing23 August 2007
The rating is higher than it ought to be simply because it is fascinating to watch a great movie remade on the cheap for no particular reason other than Columbia already owned it, and comparing it to the original.

I walked in on this in the middle. I love Ann Miller, so I kept watching. Suddenly I was hearing very familiar dialog. Hokey smokes, it's "It Happened One Night" only without the lighting, directing, production values, pacing and acting.

The sheer audacity of taking a classic (the only picture to win all five major academy awards up to that time) and turning it into a B semi-musical boggled the mind. I even was able to recite the script ahead of the actors (and better).

Contrary to the previous comment, they really did use the original brilliant dialog all over the place. It just goes to show that even a work of genius can be destroyed when placed in the wrong hands.

An Ann Miller Film With No Dancing!
timothymcclenaghan4 January 2007
This film has not been shown in so long that I thought maybe it was one of the lost films that are so often talked about. Recently Turner Classic Movies showed a fairly good print, so they must have gotten it out of Columbia's vault.

This remake of "It Happened One Night" changes the plot enough to suit Miller's talents, but retains a few of the original plot devices. However, don't judge this film by the original. This one is strictly fluff to showcase Miller, who even though a "B" star, made plenty of money for Columbia in films like this.

Miller doesn't dance at all in the film, but she does a creditable job singing four songs, and looks great (at age 22!). In her autobiography, Miller mentions good reviews she got for her singing, so I'm assuming that she didn't need dubbing. In all of her films, her singing voice sounds the same, not that this is any proof.

The title must have been chosen to insinuate more to the audience than is actually delivered. Nevertheless, if you like just looking at Ann Miller, you'll enjoy this film. After all, it's only one hour long.

"Are you drunk?" ... "Mentally, yes. Alcoholically, no!"
moonspinner5512 April 2008
Terrible script for perky songbird Ann Miller (looking like a grown-up version of Shirley Temple), doing her best with a ridiculous, derivative plot and lukewarm ballads. A radio singer on vacation in Las Vegas attempts to escape her swarming managers by hitching a ride in a guy's car; turns out he's a reporter for the Los Angeles Bulletin, and he thinks she's an escaped murderess. Even at 64 minutes, this thing's a long haul. Miller's character seems much too busy to have a social life, but then we suddenly discover she's been promised to a man named Walter W. Walter II. She really loves the reporter, named Ward Williams and played by William Wright. Her managers are played by Robert Williams and Ray Walker. These "Apples" are 'W' crazy. Ann's a peach, and she has a funny scene where she's cooked some beans for breakfast, but this vehicle for her is just a quickie product from Columbia--unworthy of Miller or anyone else. * from ****

It Happened one night to Ann Miller
XweAponX4 January 2007
This film appears to be a remake of It Happened one Night. Took me a little while to figure it out, as this movie deals with a radio singer who is trying to give her producers and managers the slip. The plot for it happened one night is not as evident in the first part of the film as it is in the last say, half of the film. There is a scene where Miller and Wright attempt to sleep in the hay on some farm and up crops verbatim dialog taken from the Clark Gable/Claudette Colbert flick: That was were the tipoff was.

The only reason I liked this at all was Anne Miller. She was as good a singer as a dancer. I'll watch any flick with Anne Miller in it any day.

Actually as a remake this flick is not bad. Due to the lack of interest in it here, I suppose it flopped at the box office. It is too bad: because this film is just as entertaining as any of that years "A" movies. Just to sit in the theatre and look at Anne Miller was worth a quarter. But probably due to a lack of publicity (and the fact that there was still a war on)- I have never heard of this movie until Today.

The "Big Radio Band" theme kinda works with Anne as she had a pretty good voice and a good range, but is almost a waste of Ann's dancing talents. We never get to see the famous long legged full body shot of Ann. THAT is a disappointment.

Ann Miller was borne to grace the screen, it is almost impossible to get a bad shot of her face or other assets. This is the only film I have seen where she has the female lead, and she takes it.

Great little musical
lagadabout4 January 2007
It didn't take me long to realize that what I was seeing was a complete re-do by Columbia Pictures of 'It Happened One Night',except this time with music. It seemed that even the same sets were used in a number of cases. The characters almost look like clones of original cast. You even have the Shapley character who threatens to expose the two lovers if they don't go along his blackmail scheme. Ann Miller is an absolute delight. Whether or not her voiced was dubbed or not, it all comes over very effectively. It's just too bad she couldn't have gone into one of her dance routines. The film only runs 64 minutes but it's worth every second of it.

It's Okay to Take a Bite
dougdoepke21 April 2010
Over-worked radio star Eve Porter (Miller) escapes celebrity whirlwind by falling into cross- country car of reporter Ward Williams (Wright) who mistakes her for a serial killer. Hi-jinks ensue, along with several songs.

Ann Miller starred in a number of these low-budget wartime musicals. All that I've seen are entertaining and sprightly, thanks to her general sparkle and likability, and I expect all made money— (Columbia knew what it was doing). This one is not front rank—the songs are undistinguished and without Ann's trademark toe-tapping zip. The romance, however, is a cute mix-up where Ward mistakes Eve for a serial killer, of all things. Wright is an obscure leading man who unfortunately died young (38). Here, he makes a good reporter but rather bland male lead for the lively Miller.

One notable feature—the hair-do's of that time. I'm wondering how long it took the ladies to coif all their hair into the elaborate buns and curls that Ann, for one, sports. I don't think there's been any style quite like it since. Anyway, someone at Columbia deserved a bonus for the cutest movie title of the year, one I certainly couldn't resist.
