- Average Joes have struggled throughout the centuries to deal with allergies like hay fever, and Joe McDoakes is no exception.
- Scientists, doctors, and Joe McDoakes are searching for a cure for his allergy. Among other things, he uses a special spray in his bedroom and anti-sneeze powders on his food. He then finds out he is allergic to his wife's dandruff, and finally wraps her head and shoulders (not a plug for a popular shampoo!) in a special breathing apparatus.—Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net>
- Joe McDoakes takes every precaution to protect himself from the symptoms of his allergies, primarily sneezing, the problem being that he doesn't know to what he is allergic which makes him somewhat neurotic. Joe comes from a long line of allergy sufferers, his ancestor, MacGregor McDoakes who at least tried to do research of the causes of his sneezing. Medical science still has much to learn about the causes of allergies, but knows a few statistics: that there is a higher concentration of allergies in big cities; that it is often combined with nervousness and/or emotions; and that allergies can be inherited. Joe may only be able to relax if he finds the cause of his sneezing and deals with it appropriately.—Huggo
