Submerged below the surface of pirate history on the South China Sea lies a deeply emotional and captivating tale of survival. Cheng Shih, a woman seemingly forgotten by history, lived on these tropical and often tempestuous waters, using her intelligence and cunningness to become one of the greatest leaders in this part of the world. Her story is one of progression, succession, and courage, which is inspiring in the face of a brutal and often violent portion of the 19th century.

Turner Classic Movies, the leading authority and definitive home of classic film, will celebrate its 30th anniversary on April 14, 2024. To honor the milestone, TCM will present on-air programming salutes featuring TCM staff who were there from the very beginning, as well as a 24-hour marathon of films with historical introductions from TCM’s first host and champion, Robert Osborne.

Turner Classic Movies will turn 30 on April 14, 2024. That’s right: It’ll be 30 years since Ted Turner flipped the switch — flanked by Old Hollywood legends Arthur Hiller, Arlene Dahl, Jane Powell, Celeste Holm, and Van Johnson — right in the middle of Times Square to turn the network “on.”
Also with Turner that day was the man who’d become TCM’s longtime host, Robert Osborne, then just 61. A veteran columnist for The Hollywood Reporter, Osborne had become known as a close friend to many of the surviving stars of yesteryear ever since he was photographed kissing Bette Davis’s hand during a Golden Globes broadcast in the late ’70s. He’d go on to host the intros and outros for most of TCM’s primetime lineup for close to 23 years after that launch date, until he died in March 2017 at 84.
For so many TCM fans, Robert Osborne was the network.

It’s a lean month for new original content on HBO/Max. November will see the return of two scripted series in Julia and Rap Sh!t, both of which are debuting their respective second seasons, but this month’s fresh highlight is likely to be Bookie, a new comedy series from the partnership of The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and Nick Bakay. The show tracks an LA bookie called Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco), whose business is in peril as California movies to legalize sports gambling.
Elsewhere in November, there quite a few interesting documentaries to keep an eye on, and two that jump out as “must watch”. The first is Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, which chronicles the aging comedian’s life and career. The second is the previously-released Little Richard: I Am Everything, which tries to peel back the whitewashed canon of Richard Penniman in a true...

Season 3 of The Mandalorian introduced fans to a new villain in Din Djarin’s orbit — the pirate king Gorian Shard. He’s covered in green vines, so it’s hard to tell who plays him. And it’s not surprising that even hardcore Game of Thrones fans haven’t recognized the actor behind this intriguing character.

This Post Contains spoilers for this week’s episode of The Mandalorian, “The Pirate.”
Well, that was a mostly welcome change of pace.
In a broad sense, “Guns for Hire” fits the Mission of the Week mode that The Mandalorian does so well, but it does it in a couple of unusual ways. It is both as comedic as the series seems capable of (or, at least, interested in) going, and it is basically a buddy cop show, with Mando and Bo-Katan making like Lennie Briscoe and one of his many partners.

This Star Wars: The Mandalorian review contains spoilers.
The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 6: Chapter 22
All of the momentum generated by last week’s rousing fireworks show of an episode, “The Pirate,” is unfortunately lost this week. “Guns For Hire” is an awkward, oddly paced urban detective story whose handful of bright spots are marred by a middling plot that plays out like a video game side mission, stilted exposition, and two of what are possibly the most distracting pop culture cameos one could conjure up in 2023.
The episode opens with a Quarren freight ship that’s been hunted down by Axe Woves, Koska Reeves, and the rest of the Mando mercenaries that split from Bo-Katan prior to this season’s events. The scene is meant to establish that the maskless Mandalorians are morally and ethically blurring the lines in comparison to the Tribe, with Axe being blatantly presented as an antagonist despite the fact that,...

In the climactic scene of "The Mandalorian" season 3, episode 3, "The Convert" -- a "Brazil"-influenced, Coruscant-set cautionary tale about the machines of power and the stubbornness of evil -- poor Dr. Penn Pershing has been betrayed, while acting with good intentions. Now he's strapped to a table, about to be brainwashed by a feared former Imperial tool called the "mind flayer." In the depths of his terror and despair, he pleads for mercy with the Mon Calamari doctor, telling him: "It was a trap!"
You know, like Admiral Ackbar? Remember when Admiral Ackbar said "it's a trap!" in "Return of the Jedi"? And people liked that line, and when internet memes were invented it became a meme? It's just like the meme, except now someone is saying it to a Mon Calamari character instead? Isn't that funn-- Oh, Dr. Pershing just got his brain fried.

From animation to live-action, the Mandalorian known as Bo-Katan Kryze (both iterations played by Katee Sackhoff) has gone through a messy redemption quest. Perhaps "redemption" may be too generous of a word. Kryze is a woman of many facets: extremist warmonger, attempted savior of Mandalore, violator of Mandalorian treaties by teaming up with the Republic military, (apparent) rightful wielder of the Darksaber, and now a guest member of a Mandalorian cult.
Bo-Katan walked many convoluted and compelling paths in the name of liberating her shattered Mandalore homeworld. Like the symbol of the Darksaber, Bo-Katan's idea of liberating and leading Mandalore has assumed many shapes, some unsavory and some noble, but always shaded by gray morality. The most recent chapter of "The Mandalorian, "The Pirate," steers Bo-Katan back into the higher calling of unifying Mandalore, but in a way that also belies the atrocities of her past allegiances.

The latest episode of "The Mandalorian," which is titled "Chapter 21: The Pirate," makes it clear that it is growing increasingly difficult for any planet to remain independent during a great time of transition between the Galactic Empire and the New Republic. High Magistrate Greef Karga (Carl Weathers) is still in the midst of improving his little corner of the Outer Rim on Nevarro when the pirate named Gorian Shard (who's quickly becoming one of our favorite characters) lays siege to the planet surface in his incredibly intimidating and fully operational Corsair ship. Through back channels, Karga enlists the help of X-wing pilot Captain Carson Teva (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) with hopes that the New Republic will protect a planet that's not an official member yet. That plan does not go well, leaving Din Djarin, Bo-Katan, and the other Mandalorians to...

This Star Wars: The Mandalorian article contains spoilers.
The Mandalorian season 3 kicks things into high gear with “The Pirate.” Gorian Shard wants to take Nevarro for himself but seriously underestimates Greef Karga’s connections. When Din, Bo-Katan, and the rest of the Mandalorians show up to kick the pirates out of town, all hell breaks loose in the skies above the city as well as on the ground. The Armorer smashes a few faces in with her hammer while Paz lays down the law with his gatling blaster, with air support from Din and Bo. By the end of the episode, Gorian has nowhere to go but down.
Unsurprisingly, the lead up and the battle itself cue up quite a few callbacks and references to other Star Wars stories, including a few cameos that should get fans excited for the future of the Mandoverse! Here are all the easter eggs...

This week’s episode of “The Mandalorian” (“Chapter 21: The Pirate”) is the best of the season and easily one of the best episodes of the entire series, full of rousing fun, featuring beautifully choreographed action and big, heartfelt moments. The Mandoverse is expanding further in 2023. While last year’s The Book of Boba Fett fleshed out the post-Return of the Jedi story of the infamous bounty hunter and his quest to rule Mos Espa, two more shows will take this corner of the Star Wars universe to new territory. There’s Jon Watts’ Skeleton Crew, which will see Jude Law leading a group of teens on an epic adventure inspired by ’80s Amblin films. We know Sabine Wren, Hera Syndulla, and Ezra Bridger are all involved in the quest to find Grand Admiral Thrawn, but there’s one name that until this moment had been left out: the grumpy Lasat rebel fighter Zeb Orrelios. Jon Favreau gets a lot of credit as the chief voice behind "The Mandalorian." In fairness, he created the show and has written the bulk of the episodes up to this point, so he's probably earned that. But Dave Filoni, the man behind "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," has also been behind him every step of the way, and his influence has been felt on a deep level. From getting Ahsoka Tano in live-action for the first time in season 2 to making Bo-Katan a central character, this show has Filioni's fingerprints all over it. Now, thanks to the series' most recent episode, titled "The Pirate," we're wading even further into Filoni territory with a huge "Star Wars Rebels" cameo.

The Mandalorian this week was all about pesky pirates, in an action-packed episode that led to the reveal that someone sporting Beskar has apparently done a very, very bad thing.
Coming out of a “Previously On” that very much tipped its hand, Season 3, Episode 5 — titled “The Pirate” — found Gorian Shard’s cruiser hovering above Nevarro, before unleashing holy hell on the built-up town below. High Magistrate Greef Karga scrambled to get a message to Carson Teva at the New Republic’s Adelphi base, before leading his people to relative safety at the lava flats on the outskirts of town. There will be spoilers for "Star Wars: The Mandalorian" Chapter 21 - The Pirate
Over the course of its 21 chapters thus far, "The Mandalorian" has referenced "Star Wars Rebels" quite a bit. One of the biggest reveals was the inclusion of Ahsoka Tano in the second season, when Din Djarin traveled to the planet Corvus. There, we saw Ahsoka battle Morgan Elsbeth, looking for the whereabouts of Grand Admiral Thrawn, which was one of the key dangling plot threads at the end of the series finale of "Rebels."
Another major hint was bringing Bo-Katan Kryze and the story of the Darksaber into the show. The tale of the Darksaber featured prominently in "Star Wars Rebels", as did the Mandalorian people and culture, as they sought to free themselves from the yolk of the Empire. Thanks to "The Mandalorian" and "The Book of Boba Fett," we know that Moff Gideon quickly unmade...

This article contains spoilers for season 3, episode 5 of "The Mandalorian."
Series creator Jon Favreau certainly knows that the Din Djarin and Grogu duo is a huge reason why viewers continue to tune in to "The Mandalorian" on a weekly basis -- but the show isn't solely about their (mis)adventures. Throughout the course of a little over two and a half seasons, the pair have come across several fan-favorite characters who could easily shoulder the weight of their own entire spin-off shows. Some of these guest stars, such as Temuera Morrison's Boba Fett and assassin Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen), have already gone on to headline "The Book of Boba Fett." Others, such as Timothy Olyphant's Cobb Vanth or Katee Sackhoff's Bo-Katan Kryze, have stolen the spotlight during their many appearances yet remain supporting players. This Post Contains spoilers for this week’s episode of The Mandalorian, “The Pirate.”
The Mandalorian is a show that likes to keep things simple whenever possible. And it’s hard to imagine a more fundamentally simple story than “heroes rescue community under siege by pirates.” It’s a framework the show has used very successfully in the past, going all the way back to Mando and Cara Dune’s initial team-up early in Season One. In many ways, “The Pirate” leans hard into this kind of straightforward, classical adventure structure.

Spoilers for "Star Wars: The Mandalorian" follow.
The hyper-chickens come home to roost in the latest episode of "The Mandalorian." The twenty-first chapter is called "The Pirate" and brings Gorian Shard back to the forefront of trouble for the people of Nevarro. The episode begins with Greef Karga (Carl Weathers) doing some serious city planning with city engineers, pleasing NUMTOTs the world over by including rail in his plans to make the city better and move cargo around. But that's when Gorian Shard returns to Nevarro to threaten Greef and the planet. Greef tries to bluff him, insisting the New Republic might help, but Gorian Shard knows better. For the insolence shown to his men the last time they visited the planet, Gorian Shard opens fire, laying waste to the city Greef Karga has worked to make safe and respectable. As he's evacuating the citizens to safety, Greef Karga dispatches...

This post contains spoilers for season 3, episode 5 of "The Mandalorian," "The Pirate."
The plot thickens in the latest episode of "The Mandalorian," where we witness Din Djarin's (Pedro Pascal) Mando covertly aiding Nevarro against a pirate attack and a massive setup for Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff) to finally retake Mandalore. A lot went down in the final 20 minutes of "The Pirate," including an especially charged scene between Bo and The Armorer (Emily Swallow), where the latter asks her to remove her helmet as she "walks both worlds," making her an exception to the strict no helmet rule that The Children of the Watch are so religiously devoted to.
Additionally, the episode ends with a rather shocking twist: Captain Carson Teva (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) discovers that Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) never made it to trial as he was extracted from the ship that was supposed to carry out the transfer. On scanning...

Get Judy and Gene at the peak of their movie star appeal, allow Vincente Minnelli to go as ‘Vincente Minelli’ as he pleases, hire the world’s greatest songwriter to provide the tunes, script by the same team behind The Thin Man and It’s A Wonderful Life, sets by Cedric Gibbons, costumes by Irene, all presided over by the fabled Freed Unit. “You think anything’s going to stand in the way of us playing the Palace this time? Oh no, not even a war.”
Judy Garland and Gene Kelly in For Me And My Gal (1942) will be available on Blu-ray June 7th from Warner Archive. It can be purchased at the Warner Archive Amazon Store
Judy Garland got top billing at the mere age of 20 as the central star of this quintessential classic that introduced none other than Gene Kelly, making his film debut as her co-star.
Directed with panache by the legendary maven of the movie musical Busby Berkeley, the films casts Gene and Judy as young vaudeville performers Harry Palmer and Jo Hayden.
The pair dream of stardom, but the United States enters World War I and Harry receives his draft notice–trapping the two between their obligation to each other’s dreams and their duty to their country.

Sometimes it’s like they read your mind—or just notice upcoming releases as you do. Whatever the case, I’m thrilled that the release of Terence Davies’ Benediction played (I assume!) some part in a full retro on the Criterion Channel this June, sad as I know that package will make me and anybody else who comes within ten feet of it. It’s among a handful of career retrospectives: they’ve also set a 12-film Judy Garland series populated by Berkeley and Minnelli, ten from Ulrike Ottinger, and four by Billy Wilder. But maybe their most adventurous idea in some time is a huge microbudget collection ranging from Ulmer’s Detour to Joel Potrykus’ Buzzard, fellow success stories—Nolan, Linklater, Jarmusch, Jia Zhangke—spread about.

Years in the making! The glory of MGM on parade! Enough studio resources to film twenty pictures were expended on this paean to showman Florenz Ziegfeld. It’s really Metro Goldwyn Mayer’s Technicolor valentine to itself, showing off the studio’s enormous stable of musical talent, along with various of its comic performers. Arthur Freed and Louis B. Mayer’s notion of ‘something for everyone’ results in weird stack of grandiose musical numbers and mostly weak comedy. The biggest draw is the incredible color cinematography that peeks through in three or four jaw-droppingly elaborate musical spectacles. The picture is a workout to find the artistic limits of the Technicolor system.

Liza Minnelli was born into show business royalty on March 12, 1946, and pressed into service onstage at the tender age of 14 months by her singer mother Judy Garland and director father Vincente Minnelli.
According to a short 1947 mention in Variety titled “In Ma’s Footsteps,” “Liza Minnelli, 14-month-old daughter of Judy Garland, makes her acting bow in Metro’s ‘The Pirate,’ which her father is directing.” It didn’t take long for her to move up to a film credit. Her first credited film role was at 3 years old, appearing briefly in “In the Good Old Summertime” alongside her mother.
And though her biggest wish when she was young was to be a dancer, Minnelli ended up doing back-to-back serious dramatic roles before winning her Oscar for her irrepressible performance as nightclub singer Sally Bowles in “Cabaret.”
“I always wanted to be a dancer. I remember going to dancing school because I asked my dad.

Now for a real treat for musical fans, a core MGM dazzler with top stars, fully restored and looking incredibly good. Vincente Minnelli’s snappy, funny 1948 show isn’t ranked among producer Arthur Freed’s best but it ought to be. Silly farce gets a high-toned, technically amazing workout as Judy Garland’s demure señorita secretly lusts after the ruthless corsair of the title, Mack the Black! Gene Kelly’s slippery carny womanizer impersonates her piratical fantasy sex object, and it all ends in clowning and killer musical numbers. Cole Porter’s smart songs attest to the great orchestrators and arrangers in MGM’s world-class music department; the new full digital restoration makes the movie look and sound better than I’ve certainly ever seen it.

Liza Minnelli is getting ready to be photographed for the cover of Variety. She’s wearing an off-the-shoulder black beaded shirtdress and perched on a director’s chair. As she adjusts herself, trying to find the right position to extend her bare legs, she screeches, “I’m getting f—ed by a chair!”
As if on cue, the room goes silent. But before anyone can blink, Minnelli’s distinctive throaty cackle bounces off the walls. It’s the permission everyone in the room needs to howl at what they can’t believe they just heard.
At 73, Minnelli is still the consummate entertainer, taking an awkward moment and turning it into a bawdy joke about getting intimate with a piece of furniture.
Minnelli isn’t a Hollywood icon — she’s a show business legend. Over the course of her career, she’s won four Tonys, two Grammys, an Emmy and an Oscar.

Nickelodeon will simulcast The SpongeBob Musical: Live On Stage! across Nickelodeon, TeenNick and Nicktoons next month, Nickelodeon said today, also noting that veteran SpongeBob SquarePants voice actor Tom Kenny has been added to the previously announced cast.
Kenny will play Patchy the Pirate and perform the original Sara Bareilles song “Poor Pirates.” Kenny joins a cast largely made up of performers from the 2017-18 Broadway production SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical.
The TV version of the musical was filmed in front of a live theater audience, and airs Saturday, Dec. 7, at 7:00 p.m. (Et/Pt).

With the star power of Judy Garland and Gene Kelly, a riotous score by Cole Porter, sensational choreography, and truly eye-popping Technicolor, on paper Vincente Minnelli’s The Pirate has all of the trappings of the smash hit musicals of the Golden Era, though went on to be an example that this mathematical equation to success in the film industry was not as predictable as it appeared. As a reinterpretation of S.N Behrman’s play by the same title, which poked fun at the tropes of the swashbuckler genre, the film traipses into the less traversed waters of satire, actively differentiating from the mainstream musical narratives of the time arguably to a fault. Despite being one of Minelli’s most notorious box office flops and having been eroded from cultural consciousness unlike its cinematic relatives such as An American in Paris or Meet Me in St. Louis,...

Turner Classic Movies continues with its Gay Hollywood presentations tonight and tomorrow morning, June 8–9. Seven movies will be shown about, featuring, directed, or produced by the following: Cole Porter, Lorenz Hart, Farley Granger, John Dall, Edmund Goulding, W. Somerset Maughan, Clifton Webb, Montgomery Clift, Raymond Burr, Charles Walters, DeWitt Bodeen, and Harriet Parsons. (One assumes that it's a mere coincidence that gay rumor subjects Cary Grant and Tyrone Power are also featured.) Night and Day (1946), which could also be considered part of TCM's homage to birthday girl Alexis Smith, who would have turned 96 today, is a Cole Porter biopic starring Cary Grant as a posh, heterosexualized version of Porter. As the warning goes, any similaries to real-life people and/or events found in Night and Day are a mere coincidence. The same goes for Words and Music (1948), a highly fictionalized version of the Richard Rodgers-Lorenz Hart musical partnership.

New Series! Three Fittings celebrates costume design in the movies.
The whitest Caribbean ladies of all time! And why is Judy wearing a kilt balled up on her head?
We kicked off with La La Land and Allied but after a break for Oscar madness we're back with an old classic. Or perhaps this movie is better described as a notorious curio though that doesn't have the same blurb power. Regardless, Vincent Minelli's The Pirate (1948) has to be seen to be believed.
You must watch it while sober for the movie is its own pharmaceutical enhancements. I'm still having sudden flashbacks. Which is all well and good since hallucinations and fever dreams are plotted right in.
Stay with me through this elaborate but crucial plot point. When travelling actor Serafin (Gene Kelly) hypnotizes the newly-engaged Manuela (Judy Garland) he realizes that she romantically fantasizes about the infamous pirate Macoco...

Her iconic character Dorothy set out to find happiness “Over the Rainbow” in The Wizard of Oz. But off-screen, Judy Garland‘s quest for peace was plagued by insecurity, depression and drug abuse.

Just as there are films that shine bright in a star's history, there are also films whose histories are controversial at best. The Pirate is an odd contradiction of a movie. As one of Judy Garland's most expensive films, it was also her first MGM bust. Released two years after childrearing had put Judy on hiatus, it was nonetheless stuck in preproduction for five years before that. While it landed Judy another hit song, the knockoff written four years later would become a classic. Though The Pirate was the loudest, brightest movie Judy had made to date, its most interesting sequences were left on the cutting room floor. What to do with The Pirate?
The Movie: The Pirate (1948, MGM)
The Songwriter: Cole Porter
The Players: Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, The Nicholas Brothers, directed by Vincente Minnelli
The Story: The Pirate must have seemed cursed from the start. By the time Vincente Minnelli started filming,...

Chicago – The countdown to the Chicago International Film Festival’s 50th Anniversary in October continued on June 28th, 2014, at the Gala Celebration at the Four Seasons Hotel in Chicago. Oscar winning actor Kevin Kline was honored at the event, and answered a few questions on the Red Carpet beforehand.
Kevin Kline was born in St. Louis, and grew up in a musically oriented family – his father owned a record store there. He went on to study at Indiana University in their top-rated School of Music, but switched to acting and drama after joining an on-campus theater group. After graduation in 1970, he went to New York City to attend the Julliard School in their newly formed Drama Division. From that study he joined fellow students like Patti LuPone in the City Center Acting Company, which performed Shakespeare and other classical works around the country.

One good thing about working for AfterElton is I know a big chunk of our readership likes, enjoys, and spends a lot of its extra time thinking about stars of the past. You have to keep those names bouncing around in your head since they're little replenishable vitamins, surges of endorphins when brought up correctly. That brings me to today's topic: Judy Garland's onscreen paramours. Garland would've been 90 yesterday, and I didn't get to properly commemorate this. But here's for compensation: I'm bringing you the definitive list of Judy's five hottest costars. Come on, boys, get happy!

A Star is Born is one of the great films of the '50s, a heartbreaking and unforgettable journey. The heroine's story gets nearly as tragic as Judy's own, particularly in '54 when she lost the Best Actress statuette to Grace Kelly in a year when she was the expected shoo-in.
