The Last Five Minutes Bail Out Those 'Peeping Toms'
ccthemovieman-123 February 2007
The Stooges are in spooky Smorgasbord Castle, given the task, as employees of the A To Z Express Company, to move some of items out of the place. Included is a medieval suit of armor.....that talks!

After freaking out each of the Stooges separately, the armor tells him, "Have to fear, gentlemen. I am a friendly spirit."

It turns out he used to be sweethearts with Lady Godiva. Then he was accused of being a "Peeping Tom." He also had pies in his face every time he opened his shutters. Yes, this episode is as stupid as it sounds, at least until the last five minutes where we do get some "spooky" stuff, as advertised, when a frog jumps in Shemp's hat and runs down the inside of his pants; a skeleton comes alive and an owl flies into the skeleton's head and flies off in it. Some of those scenes are hilarious.

I also appreciated a lot of the puns spoken in here, some of them pretty funny.

fun campy effects
SnoopyStyle7 November 2020
Larry, Moe, and Shemp are movers. They arrive at an old mansion on a stormy night. Strange happenings are afoot. They find a talking suit of armor who tells them his story. He was a tailor who got caught as a peeping Tom on Lady Godiva and got beheaded. They insist on continuing the move but the suit warns them of bad luck.

I love the skeletons and the campy effects. It's one of the best Shemp Stooges short. The only thing I would change is the pie in the face. Of course, it's a Stooges classic move but a haunted mansion needs something spooky. It's impossible for it to be something gory but they could turn into skeletons in a flash of smoke. All in all, this is fun and campy.

"The sooner we get out of this spooky joint, the better I'll like it."

Warning: Spoilers
"The Ghost Talks", directed by Jules White, is a really good Three Stooges short starring Shemp, Larry, and Moe. Working for the A to Z Express Company, the boys are hired to remove certain pieces of furniture from a haunted castle. Among the requisite items is a suit of armor, where the spirit of Peeping Tom (voiced by Phil Arnold) has rested for one thousand years.

My favorite scenes from "The Ghost Talks" include the following (DON'T read any further if you have not yet seen this film). After Moe gets doused by the rain on Shemp's umbrella, he attempts to whack Shemp in the face with it, but he whacks Larry instead. Watch Moe's hair-raising reaction to the talking armor. A frog jumps down Shemp's back, causing him to gyrate wildly and do Curly's famous shoulder spin. Shemp plays on Larry's and Moe's apprehensiveness by adapting a creepy radio voice telling of "strange happenings", and then he becomes scared of his own mirror reflection. The two skeletons playing chess are a nice touch, too.

I personally think "The Ghost Talks" is one of the best two-reelers Jules White directed with the Shemp/Larry/Moe ensemble. There are even a few thrown pies to boot! A wonderfully spooky short to watch during the Halloween season, or ANY season, for that matter.

The Ghost Talks!
Movie Nuttball11 March 2004
This is on of the spookiest and funniest Three Stooges shorts! It begins rather well with thunders storms and the howling wind! When the Stooges discover that the armor talks and they have a conversation about who he is its gets really good after that! I think I was funny when the Stooges opened that chest and the skeleton came out and he says that he's Red and Shemp says Red Skeleton! I thought that was very funny! There is a lot of other type of spooky stuff in this one and also another funny part in it is when Larry talks to the suit of armor he say to "well maybe he doesn't talk English" and then he say things in other languages and the suit of armor replies to it and Larry's hat spins around and he is very frightened! I thought it was funny! The owl scene was very funny! Like some other spooky type Three Stooges shorts this is a great Three Stooges short to watch over again around Halloween time!

One of their lesser efforts
frankfob2 April 2012
The Stooges are movers hired to clean out an old house and get mixed up with the ghosts of Peeping Tom and Lady Godiva. This is definitely one of the team's lesser--VERY lesser--efforts. Much of the "script" doesn't particularly make sense, and the comedy is lame and forced. The Stooges just seem to be going through the numbers, as if they've done this a thousand times before, which they pretty much had. The only saving grace occurs at the end when the "ghost" of Lady Godiva rides in on a white horse to take away the ghost of Peeping Tom, who had been trapped inside a suit of armor. Godiva is played by Columbia starlet Nancy Saunders, a tall, long-legged blonde in a skimpy, attention-getting outfit. She's a sight to see, but it's not really worth sitting through this tired, by-the-numbers "comedy" to see it. Skip it.

A slightly different Stooges work, but not one of their best (or better)

Warning: Spoilers
"The Ghost Talks" is an American 16-minute black-and-white short film from 1949, so this one will soon have its 70th anniversary. When you read the names of director White and writer Adler and know a bit about the 40s (and 50s) in filmmaking, then maybe you also know already that here we have another of the many many Three Stooges short films. Curly was already out at this point due to his worsening health and Shemp took over for him. This is one of the spookier Stooges works, but that is just side action of course. At the very core, this is all about the comedy like all the other Three Stooges works, even if there are actually invisible supernatural creatures part of this. While back in the Curly days, the gang tried to have him at the center of their films, this quickly changed afterward and with Shemp, they are more like going for the team effort. Even Larry has a lot of lines in here. But while I don't mind Shemp like many of the others, I still cannot say I enjoyed the watch too much here. But this may also have to do with me not liking the Stooges' slapstick approach to comedy too much. Lets be honest, it's close to being the same in all their works and the story lines, if you can even call them like that, are never memorable. This one here gets another thumbs-down. No need to watch it. Let alone remake it. Not recommended.

Not one of their best

When I was a kid and first saw this, it stymied me. What would a woman riding a horse be doing in a haunted house ? After several years of knowing who Lady Godiva is and the legend of Peeping Tom it now makes sense.Even then, the slapstick humor of the boys doesn't work well in a haunted house. If it was Curly, definitely, Stan Laurel or Lou Costello, absolutely, but the Stooges to me was always about three guys who were friends who fought with each other; otherwise, they would have killed each other a long time ago. The short does win points on the creepy atmosphere level. A skull flies through the air on wings flapping a sheet behind it and skeletons roam the house on their bony legs. Good images for a haunted house ! One note though, the Red Skeleton gag is a funny one, but the Southern black man accent isn't politically correct for the changing of the times.
