San Francisco once again opens its golden gate.

I guess this is too far west to be considered a western. Or maybe it's because it's set in a growing city where corruption has legal protection because it's part of government or legalized because of payoffs. Coming to the big city doesn't seem to be the dream for Gloria Henry, only there because her brother has been murdered and determined to find out what happened and bring the culprit to justice. She gets a job at one of the most popular saloons, befriending manager Stephen Dunne which makes girlfriend Adele Jergens really jealous and pull out the claws. District attorney Robert Shayne seeks to help her, determined to remove all the corruption from the coast.

Perhaps not as memorable as "San Francisco" or "Barbary Coast", but those were big budget studio productions that have lots of gloss. This is from Columbia's B unit yet is faster moving and very direct. The female rivalry between Henry and Jergens provides many amusing moments, and the way Dunne assigns his "ladies" to aggressively pursue customers there on their own has some interesting responses, especially the sailor who responds to "How about buying a lady a drink?" with "I don't see any lady." More than just a passable time filler, mainly thanks to a very smart screenplay.
