Her incandescent beauty, innocent sensuality, and effervescent persona still send hearts aflutter and earned her the sobriquet of “Venus of Indian films”, but Madhubala’s enigmatic and beguiling smile and charm masked a lifetime of pain and suffering.
Madhubala, who passed away on this day (February 23) in 1969, earned tributes that have rarely been matched, leave alone surpassed.
She acted in a film named after her when she was not even midway through her career, was being copied or parodied when she was still acting, and is possibly the only Indian, film or otherwise, with a song dedicated to her being played at the Olympics.
She was also compared to the near-contemporary Marilyn Monroe – the two would pass away within a few years of each other, both aged 36, but did not welcome this as she did not consider herself a sex symbol.

The controversy that surrounds filmmaker Roman Polanksi isn’t something that was newly discovered when the #MeToo movement began several years ago. No, Polanski’s well-documented conviction of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor has been public knowledge for decades, and his eventual escape to Europe to evade prison time has lasted just as long. But as with Woody Allen, the revival of interest in Polanski’s sexual assault and fugitive status came several years ago, leading to his dismissal from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and a persona non grata status amongst Hollywood studios.

“We care about films, that’s our job. We don’t care about personal history,” Rai general director Paolo Del Brocco says
Roman Polanski has set his next directorial feature, “The Palace,” which will be produced by Italian film outfit Rai Cinema.
Polanski is a convicted child rapist who has been shunned from Hollywood and is in exile from America. Nevertheless, he continues to work in Europe and won the Silver Bear from the Venice Film Festival in 2019 for his film “An Officer and a Spy.”
According to a Rai Cinema press conference announcing the slate (via Screen Daily), “The Palace” is set at a hotel in Switzerland on New Year’s Eve 1999. Rai Cinema is producing along with Italy’s Eliseo Entertainment, which also co-produced “An Officer and a Spy.”
Polish filmmaker and Golden Bear winner Jerzy Skolimowski wrote the script, and the film is aiming to begin shooting in the fall.

It’s rare that news involves a film one will likely never be able to legally see in the United States. While even Woody Allen’s A Rainy Day in New York eventually arrived stateside last fall, no U.S. distributor is willing to touch Roman Polanski’s latest film, An Officer and a Spy. Nonetheless, the director––who is facing rape charges from a number of women and fled America in the late 1970s––is now prepping his next feature.
Co-written by Jerzy Skolimowski and Polanski, The Palace is a drama set on New Year’s Eve 1999 in a luxurious Swiss hotel where the lives of various guests and those working at the hotel intertwine. Backed by Paolo Del Brocco’s Italian company Rai Cinema and Luca Barbareschi’s Eliseo Entertainment, production is aiming to get underway this fall, which means a 2022 premiere is likely.

This of course took place before Covid happened. But there is little reason to think that Constantin Television’s goals will have changed with coronavirus.
On Feb. 24, on the first day of the Berlinale Series Market, Oliver Berben, Constantin head of TV, entertainment and digital media, took to the stage to host a Constantin Television showcase.
It packed a major new show announcement: “The Palace,” produced for Zdf, an identical twin period drama, set just before the fall of the wall, from Uli Edel, director of 1981 movie German classic “Christine F,” Constantin’s first big international breakout, and a string of more recent series hits for the company, such as “Adlon Hotel” and “The Master Butcher.”
Rodica Doehnert (“Adlon Hotel”) serves as lead writer. Kathrin Bullemer and Rüdiger Böss produce. Global Screen handles worldwide distribution.

German director Uli Edel (“The Baader Meinhof Complex”) is set to direct “Heisenberg,” an adaptation of Richard von Schirach’s historical book “The Night of the Physicists: Operation Epsilon: Heisenberg, Hahn, Weizsäcker and the German Bomb,” about the team of German physicists who tried to develop the atom bomb for Germany during World War II.
Munich-based companies Kj Entertainment and Fireworks Entertainment are teaming up with Film Manufacturers Inc. (Fmi) in New York to co-produce “Heisenberg” from a script by Marco Wiersch (“Der Fall Barschel”).
Published in Germany in 2012, von Schirach’s book traces the efforts of Germany’s top physicists to develop an atomic bomb for the Nazi government during the war. Arrested by the Allies in the spring of 1945, the scientists first hear of the U.S. attack on Hiroshima while detained in a country house near Cambridge.

Welcome to this weeks review on WWE Raw… a show that has made me dread Monday night TV. Although the online buzz about this episode has got me a little more interested in the show than in recent weeks.
Match #1: Bobby Roode & Chad Gable def. Aop & Drake Maverick in a 2-on-3 Handicap to become the new Raw Tag Team Champions The following is courtesy of WWE.com:
After Aop attacked Chad Gable backstage during a match between Bobby Roode and Drake Maverick last week, Baron Corbin turned that singles bout into an impromptu 2-on-3 Handicap Match that allowed Maverick to pick up a humiliating win over The Glorious One. Though Aop looked strong in the height of their Raw Tag Team Championship Match this week, Maverick’s cocky nature sank his team team’s title reign. Rivalry and exacerbated competitiveness apart, Kangna Ranaut and Deepika Padukone have one thing in common. They've both paid a tribute to the mythical Madhubala. In Milan Luthria's Once Upon A Time In Mumbai, Kangna played a character that was partly inspired by Madhubala. Now in Sanjay Leela Bhansali (Slb)'s Bajirao Mastani Deepika Padukone has paid a full-on tribute to Madhubala's legendary Pyar Kiya Toh Darna Kya from K Asif's Mughal-e-Azam. According to sources from the film's team, Slb designed the entire song on Asif's spectacular vision. There is nothing better on Halloween than watching a scary film. It gets even better if it is a spooky, bone chilling, terrifying Bollywood film. With the spine tingling themes of haunted abandoned havelis (mansions), reincarnation, revenge of the dead and wandering lost spirits – who said that Bollywood only told romantic tales?
You may recall the chillingly melancholic ‘Aayega Aane Waala’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar.
Yes – this was the the first time Bollywood truly met the “horror” genre through Kamal Amrohi’s box office smash hit, Mahal (1949). Starring Ashok Kumar and Madhubala in the lead, Mahal was the very first Hindi film to explore the theme of re-incarnation. In the style of a thriller, Mahal pioneered the way for Gothic Indian fiction.

Among the few silent films that remain are three Indo-German co-productions that predate the arrival of the German technicians and directors who worked in the Bombay Talkies studio in the 1930s. The Light of Asia was shot in India but edited and processed in Germany and intertitled in English. The script was adapted from Sir Edwin Arnold's epic poem The Light of Asia (1861) while the opening credits proclaim it was "Shown by Royal Command at Windsor Castle, April 27 1926" and that it benefited greatly from help offered by the Maharaja of Jaipur. The film shows westerners touring India (Mumbai, Delhi, Varanasi) who come to Bodh Gaya, the site of Gautam Buddha's Enlightenment.

Akshay Kumar’s Special Chabbis is very guarded and has been kept completely under wraps. Entire team has taken a lot of effort in keeping the news underground on what the film is about.
Officially, Special Chabbis is an edgy gritty heist drama and the makers are highlighting that the film is based on the real-life daring heist dated 19-Mar-1987 where an unknown man posing as Cbi officer Mon Singh recruited 26 men and executed a daylight raid on the Opera House branch of Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri in Mumbai, and disappeared with jewellery worth lakhs.
However sources close to the unit a fact that everyone is trying to underplay is the role of Akshay Kumar is based on Mithilesh Kumar Srivastava, better known as Natwarlal.

Yash Chopra's soul sister, muse and Mata Saraswati- reincarnated Lata Mangeshkar isn't singing in the director's new venture. It's a first in his long and illustrious career as a filmmaker. From the time Yash Chopra turned producer-director in 1973 with Daag, Lataji's voice has been integral to Yash Chopra's creativity and cinema right until his last directorial venture Veer-Zaara.
In a conversation with this writer Yashji gushed, "Lataji has always been so kind to me. She can never say no to me. As long as I am there and she's there, she'll continue to sing for my films. She's a legend beyond all human definition of the word. She's my sister and I'm so proud of her. That's why I say she's one singer who doesn't follow music, music follows her. When I see her I feel very small and humbled. There're no words to describe her. She's truly the Bharat Ratna.

From reincarnations to haunted mansions. From vindictive oatmeal faced corpses to shape shifting nagins, Bollywood has bravely offered a plethora of films in the name of horror over the years. A still from the classic Mahal
In a country obsessed with lost souls and reincarnation, it was natural for filmmakers to dabble in this facet of the supernatural. Perhaps the first path breaking film in this genre was Kamal Amrohi?s 1949 hit, Mahal. The film was replete with a spooky house filled with life size portraits, grandfather clocks, swinging crystal chandeliers and a haunting tune (Aayega Aanewaala) carried by the air and sung by an elusive candle-lit lady. As we sat down to write the introduction to our list of notable film spin-offs, someone forwarded along a link to the big movie news story of the day: Tom Cruise announcing his plan to reprise his role as ultra-profane movie producer Les Grossman from the 2008 film "Tropic Thunder" in an as-yet-untitled comedy. Tom Cruise, in other words, is getting into the spin-off game.
So even though we're a week late in finishing this list inspired by "Get Him to the Greek" (more on that film in a bit), it's still plenty timely, and will continue to be as long as Hollywood exploits successful properties even after their original stars have moved on. Here's the elite company Mr. Grossman will be joining:
"Evan Almighty" (2007)
Original movie: "Bruce Almighty" (2003)
Spin-off character: Evan Baxter (Steve Carell)

Vikramaditya Motwane’s “Udaan”, the film that made it to Un Certain Regard at Cannes International Film festival after seven years has been the talk of the town lately. With Udaan, Indian cinema’s seven year long jinxed relationship with the premier film festival has come to an end. With supernatural horrors Click, Hide & Seek and Shaapit about to hit cinemas ready to chill and thrill audiences, it’s a good time to take a look back at this interesting, but little explored genre of Hindi cinema.
Widely acknowledged as the first Indian horror film was Kamaal Amrohi’s Mahal (1949), the film was a haunting ghost story which starred Ashok Kumar as the new resident of a strange mansion that had a tragic history. Shot in the then fashionable eerily atmospheric German Expressionistic style by German cinematographer Joseph Wirsching, the film also stars the ethereal Madhubala and features Lata Mangeshkar’s first hit song: ‘Ayega Aanewala’. Notable as one of the earliest movies in the world to deal with the theme of reincarnation and rebirth, Mahal has remained influential right up into the present day, inspiring numerous films on the same theme, including Madhumati (1958), Karz (1980), Karan Arjun (1995), Om Shanti Om...
