My granddad was a baron.
dbdumonteil21 July 2014
This movie was made for Luis Mariano's fans ,only for them;if you are not,you must move on.The Bel Canto aficionados will be overjoyed ,for ,like all Mariano's vehicles such as "Violettes Impériales" ,it is a musical ,including sequences in costume .

The beginning when the girls' idol's wedding is announced is quite realistic ,although the chosen one remains quite obscure .Things go downhill afterward ,as far as the screenplay is concerned.

The singer is a genuine noble ,and his granddaddy ,about to die (or is he a great pretender?) of an attack ,wants the prodigal Grandson to come home ,that is to the ancestors ' desirable château. It will be the scene of light-hearted coming and goings of lovers ,a kind of thing the average viewer has seen a hundred times or more.

Brunette Maria Mauban was one of the stars of the French fifties ,but never made a memorable movie before calling quit in 1958.Jules Berry overplays and is quite unbearable (he overplayed in "Le Jour Se Lève" too,but in a sublime way;pick up Carné's or Renoir's works,if you want to see what the man is capable of).Louis De Funès appears in numerous scenes,as the faithful servant, but he is not really given a single chance to shine .

For Mariano's fans only.He possessed an outstanding voice, but was a very limited actor.

Warning: Spoilers
This is the opposite of his usual fare. It's also black n white, before his productions were converted to color. He looks beautiful in black n whites too.Creates more of an allure ,to-- his entertainment!Luis now plays Frank Reno, a successful professional pop singer. He has a dysfunctional family of course.Baron DE, Valarman, played by Jules Berry, his grand father. His mother, played by Denise Grey and his older brother played by Bernard Lajarrige,His Fiancé ,played by Anne Laurens. His Father Jean Ozenne.Lauries's girl friend who treats the count real good,as if she's a nurse ,played by Collette George. Louis Defunes plays their butler and for the first time you see him before he started to lose his hair and get old.He looks like he could of played the leading roles in films. Then theirs the ambitious reporter ,played by a Donna Reed type,Margaret Duval.Everyone in Luise's Family is waiting for the count to drop dead so they can inherited his fortune and estate.Well it happens ,he gets a heart attack .He send his daughter to fetch Frank to handle his estate, which interrupts his career angers his agent or publicity agent. It was hard for me to understand what Franks side kick was. Margaret Duval ,ambitous reporter, befriends Bernard to get into his families house to get the scoop of what is going on demanded by her boss ,played by Robert Renford. The songs that Luis sings the tempo of the samba is slower in some of his songs. There is also an emphasis of Luise Spanish heritage, like the song he sings to Duval as they look at a painting of his Spanish ancestor leads to a flash back.,at the time of the Spanish inquisition, were he sing to her in Elizabethan costumes. This movie should of been shot in color. The mishap happens When Laurie ends up in Luis's room cause she angry at Christian making flirt at Margaret and in the hall way Margaret and Christian,as Margeret earlier tries to get her reporters book she hiding the garden. The count ,now better, up in the hallway accuses Mariano of fooling around and insist that Luis marries Laurie. This almost wreck his career as French teeny bopers are all angry at him when it's reported .But Things straighten themselves out.Luis was one time recognize as an intentional star in the united state in the fifties ,but, thanks to greedy corporate distributors and greedy t.v classic film channels ,In the united states ,they rather member ,Jean Gabin,Claude Chabrol,Fransois Truffette and Francioua Rosey Jean Luc Goddard only.Because they are Artsy fantasy.Mariano is more Hollywood. 07/10/13
