Pro Wrestling Sheet is reporting that since January, the WWE has been talking to the Sinclair Broadcasting Group, owners of Ring of Honor Wrestling, with the hopes of purchasing that promotion. Talks are said to be in the opening stages and, similar to the conversation the WWE had with Impact Wrestling before Anthem Sports purchased that company, may turn out with no change in ownership.
As a fan of both organizations, I'm conflicted by this news. There are some performers in Ring of Honor who would be amazing in either the WWE or the Nxt brand. Adam Cole for one would be a huge aquisition for the WWE. While rumor has it he's already WWE bound, having him come into the company and acknowledge the work he's created in Ring of Honor would do a lot to establish him for the casual WWE audience.

Kenji Fujishima's preview of this year's New York Asian Film Festival is just one of several we've gathered so far: "Alongside the likes of its opening-night selection, Philip Yung’s Aaron Kwok-led, Christopher Doyle-lensed crime drama Port of Call, and Ghost in the Shell director Mamoru Oshii’s latest live-action film Nowhere Girl, are festival-circuit travelers like this year’s centerpiece pick, Sabu’s Chasuke’s Journey, and Sion Sono’s gangster rap musical Tokyo Tribe." But "the programmers at Subway Cinema have not forgotten the past in favor of highlighting the present, as evidenced by the inclusion in its lineup of films as recent as Tsui Hark’s 2014 3D martial-arts epic The Taking of Tiger Mountain and as vintage as Teruo Ishii’s 1965 prison drama Abashiri Prison and Kinji Fukasaku’s ultra-violent 1973 yakuza thriller Battles Without Honor and Humanity." » - David Hudson...

Japan is launching a new promotional initiative designed to boost the global market for Japanese films, TV, manga and other contents – Japan Day Project (Jdp) – at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Backed by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industr (Meti), Jdp is hosting a Japan Pavilion at Cannes that will showcase Japanese content, as well as organising a comprehensive programme of seminars, show reel screenings and networking events.
“Our goals are two-fold,” said Japan Day Project brand manager Mika Morishita. “First, we will create platforms for Japanese industry professionals to build valuable business partnerships with international counterparts.
“Second, we will bring the best of Japanese culture and entertainment to influential audiences, establishing lasting personal connections between Japan and global consumers.”
The seminars programme – New Gateways to the Japanese Industry – features speakers such as casting director Yoko Narahashi, who introduced Ken Watanabe and Rinko Kikuchi to Hollywood, and Paris-based producer Masa Sawada, whose credits...

“It is our greatest honour to have an opportunity to show Kinji Fukasaku’s masterpiece, Battles Without Honor And Humanity, to people across the world in the Cannes Classics programme. Unfortunately, Mr. Sugawara passed away last year, but we couldn’t be happier to share his glory with others.”

Bunta Sugawara, best known for his roles in the Battles Without Honor and Humanity yakuza gangster films, died from liver cancer aged 81 at a Tokyo hospital on Friday. His funeral was held in private on Sunday, before the announcement of his death was made, in a similar fashion to that of Ken Takakura's last month. Born in the northeast city of Sendai, Sugawara dropped out of Tokyo's Waseda University and worked as a model before joining the now defunct Shintoho studio and bowing on the big screen in 1958. After a stint at the Shochiku studio, his break came 15

For many years I was the head of film programming for the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles, a non-profit film group that currently runs the Egyptian and Aero Theatres. As part of my job I tried to keep my finger to the pulse of national cinemas from around the globe, both new and old, by combing through festival catalogues, talking to other programmers and watching as many movies as I could get my hands on (much of these in the old VHS days!)
In the 1990s and early 2000s I saw the rediscovery of some amazing bodies of world cinema such as Italian Horror and Giallo Cinema from the 1960s & 1970s by directors like Mario Bava and Dario Argento, and Japanese Outlaw Cinema from the same period by hard-hitting genre filmmakers like Kinji Fukasaku, Seijun Suzuki and Kihachi Okamoto. But one thing I didn’t see, in repertory film calendars,...
