Treasures from the archives of the late Suicide frontman Alan Vega and his widow, Liz Lamere, will come out in the year ahead. The first will be a solo album, Insurrection, that Vega recorded in the late Nineties, and its latest single, “Cyanide Soul,” sounds as unsettling as Suicide’s Seventies recordings. A mechanical rhythm propels its way through Vega’s and Lamere’s icy, synthy atmospheres as Vega whispers in a menacing way about cyanide. It’s just as eerie as “Mercy,” the first track to be released from Insurrection,...

In 1987, Wavy Gravy asked Jerry Garcia to play a benefit concert to raise money for his Hog Farm Collective. Garcia agreed, and brought the Jerry Garcia Band to French’s Camp on the Eel River in Piercy, California, a secluded spot three hours north of San Francisco. Garcia broke out Grateful Dead classics, covers like Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young,” Van Morrison’s “And it Stoned Me” and more.

St. Charles County, Mo – One of rock and roll music’s last living pioneers, Chuck Berry, was found dead in his home in St. Charles County, Missouri, on Mar. 18, 2017. He was the “Father of Rock ‘n Roll” for his hit songs in the 1950s, but Berry was also known for his controversies and live concert style. He was 90 years old.
Berry, along with Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and others in the 1950s, established the style of songs that influenced a generation of rock artists, including The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen and virtually any other guitar hero who had to learn Berry’s song “Johnny B. Goode” to get to the next level. His most productive period came in Chicago, when he recorded songs that he wrote for Chess Records on the near south side. John Lennon once said, “If you tried to give rock and roll another name,...

Legendary guitarist and singer-songwriter Chuck Berry, who is considered one of the pioneers of rock and roll music, has died. He was 90.
According to the St. Charles County Police Department, Berry was found unresponsive in his Missouri home on Saturday. Attempts to revive him proved unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at approximately 1:30 pm. A cause of death has not been reported.
Berry had a number of unforgettable hits in the 1950s — including “Maybellene,” “Roll Over Beethoven,” “Rock and Roll Music” and “Johnny B. Goode” — but it’s “You Never Can Tell” with which TV viewers are probably most familiar.

The odd proposition of The Great Wall didn't excite moviegoers in the States -- Matt Damon leading historical fantasy fiction about China's great wall and monstersWhaaa?-- but its huge price tag (150 million budget) doesn't mean it will lose big since it's already made over 200 million overseas. Generally speaking director Zhang Yimou knows how to wondrous spectacle movies but this movies reviews leave something to be desired. Nevertheless it was a relatively quiet weekend with not much changing as the maintream titles played steadily and the Oscar titles are beginning to decline as the conversation around the Oscars nears its end point.
But did anyone see I Am Not Your Negro's huge box office gross coming? You never can tell with documentaries which ones will convince people to buy tickets en masse. In specialty theaters the Mexican rom-com Everybody Loves Somebody also opened to strong numbers.

Are you wondering what's going to be happening on your favorite college campus this fall?
Well, so are we.
And we have a wee bit of news to share that might help as you wait.
Esai Morales and Amy Madigan have landed guest starring roles on How to Get Away with Murder Season 3.
And we have absolutely no details about who they will be playing or what they will be doing.
So if you thought ABC and Shonda Rhimes was going to start changing things when it came to Htgawm, well then you were just wrong.
Madigan is a Shondaland multi-player, however.
She previously did a multi-season arc as Meredith's psychiatrist on Grey's Anatomy.
I have a feeling many of you will be familiar with her from that role. So wouldn't it be fun to see her go polar opposite and be rotten to the core on Htgawm?

The 100 has been on a strong streak of episodes lately as it heads into the last few of the season. Lately, it’s been successful because it plays into its history (this time with flashbacks) and is still able to use that history and move the story forward. You never can tell where the story is going next, which is perhaps the greatest thing about this show. In that vain, this episode didn’t disappoint. This week on The 100: Marcus and prisoner Pike arrive in the capital to find it overrun by Alie. Alie insists that they need Kane, so they torture him

One of the highlights for me each January is getting to see what emerges from the Sundance Film Festival with awards buzz. I was lucky enough to attend once a few years back and it’s an experience unlike anything else, both in terms of the festival circuit and just life in general. This year, Sundance 2016 seems to be a fairly mellow year in terms of things set to appeal to Oscar voters, but that doesn’t mean that that the fest doesn’t have a ton of interesting things to anticipate. As such, I’ve listed just 12 of the most interesting in my eyes. Your mileage may vary, but these are the flicks that I most want to see when they move from Park City to a theater near you… Here now are a dozen movies from Sundance that are worth keeping an eye out for: The Birth of...

You never can tell who's behind the mask. Celebs love to play dress up at conventions, going incognito to walk the floor alongside The Rest Of Us. Mark Ruffalo is The Hulk in Marvel's "The Avengers," and Jared Leto is The Joker in DC's upcoming "Suicide Squad," but they both went for very different costumes while trolling fans at New York Comic Con.
Jared even shared a photo with someone dressed as his own Joker (see above) noting that the guy had no idea who he was standing next to. That's just cruel! (And very Joker.) Here are more stealth pics from Ruffalo and Leto, who obviously should've walked the floor together:

M Night Shyamalan made his name with Oscar-nominated chiller The Sixth Sense, but it's comic book-inspired follow-up Unbreakable that many regard as his best movie.
The writer-director's 2000 drama, about a security guard (Bruce Willis) who discovers he's indestructible, didn't match Sixth Sense's titanic box office success but proved to be way ahead of the curve when it comes to Hollywood's current superhero fascination.
Shyamalan, promoting his new horror-comedy The Visit, told Digital Spy he hasn't given up on Unbreakable 2.
"You never know. It's a world I really love and I've been thinking about it a lot. It wouldn't be a normal sequel that's for sure," he said.
Bruce Willis's heroic David Dunn and his powder-boned nemesis Elijah Price (Samuel L Jackson)? They'd both return to resume battle.
"If I can put it together those characters will be back. It would be fun to work with them again," he said.

The career of Sharon Stone has been nothing if not unpredictable. From big screen blockbusters, such as Total Recall and Basic Instinct, to independent fare such as Broken Flowers and Bobby; from awards-fodder such as Casino, to diabolical travesties, such as Catwoman – Stone has continued to keep us on our toes. The Apes movies practically defined the law of diminishing returns. Franklin J Schaffner’s seminal science-fiction, Planet of The Apes was one of the biggest hits of 1968. An ingenious adaptation of Pierre Boule’s novel, it won an Oscar for John Chambers’ iconic make-up effects and took the ‘Twist Ending’ to a new level, possibly never surpassed.
Despite the colossal box office returns of its predecessor, Beneath The Planet of The Apes had its budget halved – a penny-pinching exercise that would continue throughout the series. By the time of Conquest of The Planet of The Apes, allegory had taken over spectacle, and the films became a running commentary on racial oppression and the contemporary 1970s actions of the Black Panther movement. Cleverly, the five original Ape movies form a long circular narrative, with the time-travelling chimpanzees of Escape From The Planet of The Apes, giving birth to a son whose...

After 16 months and 31 issues, the Superior Spider-Man-era came to a close in April. Now that the Superior-era is officially over (for now. 1951. Film noir's focus on post-war malaise may be winding down, but Dick Powell, the moon-faced crooner who reinvented himself as a tough guy in Murder, My Sweet, still has one private eye role up the sleeve of his shabby raincoat. But You Never Can Tell is not like other private eye movies.
Beginning with a far-fetched premise—cracker tycoon leaves fortune to dog—Lou Breslow's movie swiftly plunges into full-on derangement, as the dog is reincarnated as a detective and tasked with solving his own murder, assisted by a reincarnated lady horse. Most of what follows is merely agreeably goofy, but the sequence setting up the supernatural premise is so bizarre it should not be shown to anyone under the influence of anything stronger than Kibble.
Experimental cinema was alive and well in 1951. The "special photography" of David S. Horsley, a Brit, gives everything an embossed quality, even the mammoths.

The Oscars are coming Sunday and as you look around the web, you can see that all the pundits are getting their final predictions in just under the buzzer. What's fascinating to me is how, really, everyone seems to mostly agree. The degrees of fluctuation in those who might disagree on this or that category is minimal. And where some might diverge in one category or another, there are certainly others there to back them up. Basically, no one is way out on any limbs alone and we're all more or less expecting the same range of activity. That means we're all, of course, Wrong — at least somewhere. So what will the surprises be? That's the question I keep hearing, even from publicists and strategists who have their ear closer to the ground than us lowly pundits. Well, it just so happens there are a couple of places worthy of...

Actor who played many major Shakespearean roles on the stage
Few actors played as many major Shakespearean roles as did Paul Rogers, a largely forgotten and seriously underrated performer, who has died aged 96. It was as though he was barnacled in those parts, undertaken at the Old Vic in the 1950s, by the time he played his most famous role, the vicious paterfamilias Max in Harold Pinter's The Homecoming at the Aldwych theatre in 1965 (and filmed in 1973).
Staunch, stolid and thuggish, with eyes that drilled through any opposition, Rogers's Max was a grumpy old block of granite, hewn on an epic scale, despite the flat cap and plimsolls – horribly real. Peter Hall's production for the Royal Shakespeare Company was monumental; everything was grey, chill and cheerless in John Bury's design, set off firstly by a piquant bowl of green apples and then by the savage acting.

RunningSeptember 3-October 13, the show's sumptuous costumes, elegant settings and Shavian wit will raise a champagne toast to a year of celebration at The Pearl, where Shaw, following Shakespeare, has been the second most produced playwright in The Pearl's history. With Machete we got what is probably a first in the movie world: It began as just a joke trailer from the two films released as Grindhouse. Then, director Robert Rodriguez finished the footage he had shot for the trailer and released it on its own in theaters. It then proceeded to do about twice as well as its heavily advertised cousin. You never can tell, can you? Here's the second trailer for the Mexploitation sequel Machete Kills:...

Zach Braff’s Kickstarter campaign has been scrutinized from nearly every angle by now, with people seeming to be evenly divided between those who think he’s a rich scumbag exploiting his fans into paying for a whimsical new project and those who think he’s found a game-changing way to help finance movies without having to cater to cumbersome studio demands, with the added bonus of making a group of fans feel even more involved in a movie’s production. Of course, there’s plenty of hypocrisy to go around, following the generally positive response to a similar campaign by Rob Thomas and the Veronica Mars people. (Welcome to the Oscar Guide, your chaperone through the Academy’s 24 categories awarding excellence in film. A new installment will hit every weekday in the run-up to the Oscars on February 24, with the Best Picture finale on Friday, February 22.) The sound categories this year ended up being quite the race. A publicity angle was even built around the work put into one nominee; it's been the presumed frontrunner for a while for a reason. Wait, everyone know who Frank Ocean is, right?
Actually, no.
Sure, he dominated the 2012 year-end best albums lists, and is entering the 2013 Grammys with a leading six nominations, including nods for best album and best new artist as well as two for singing the indelible hook on Kanye West and Jay-z's "No Church In The Wild." But Ocean's album "Channel Orange" has only sold 500,000 records and he's simply not a well-known name.
Yes, I know you love Frank's debut "Channel Orange," but your mom probably thinks he's Billy Ocean's son. Before you get out of this article and into our car, let me explain.
As serious music fans, we can get blinded by the fact that just because everyone we know is familiar with a musician or band, it doesn't mean the mainstream is. This was made crystal clear at the Grammys two years ago when Arcade Fire...
