- GoofsAlthough Henry Morgan is depicted as Blackbeard's chief antagonist, Morgan retired on 1683 and died in 1688, when Blackbeard (born circa 1680) was only eight years old. Blackbeard did not arrive in the Indies until the closing years of the 17th Century, well after Morgan's death.
- Crazy creditsOpening credits prologue: "The meeker the man, the more pirate he, Snug in his armchair, far from the sea, And reason commends his position: He has all of the fun and none of the woes, Masters the ladies and scuttles his foes, And cheats both the noose and perdition!"

Linda is lovely but Newton hams it up
Saturday matinée adventure version of the Blackbeard legend. Linda Darnell is breathtaking in eye popping Technicolor and gets a chance to play the damsel in distress full of fiery temper tantrums. Keith Andes cuts a very handsome, athletic and dashing figure as the lawman who butts heads with Blackbeard and woos Linda along the way. The supporting cast is filled with reliable character actors who add color to their roles with William Bendix, Alan Mowbray and Torin Thatcher all getting their moments in the spotlight. And along for the ride is Irene Ryan, Granny Clampett herself, all dolled up as Linda's maid who has a funny drunk scene.
Everybody plays more to the balcony than usual but they have to when confronted with Robert Newton's Blackbeard which he plays without one ounce of restraint! An actor of great skill most of the time he's obviously relishing the chance to let loose, he sort of cornered the market on this type of role with Treasure Island and Long John Silver also on his resume, and at least this is the kind of picture that lends itself to that sort of no holds barred performance. Unfortunately his lack of restraint spilled over into his personal life and the high living, hard drinking actor only lived a few years after this.
The picture is well directed by Raoul Walsh keeping a tight pace and is full of swash and buckle. One small note: Blackbeard's fate is rather graphically shown and might be disturbing for small children but otherwise this is a perfect lightweight feature for a Saturday morning.
