Pixar’s newest feature Inside Out isn’t due in theaters until next year – but we already have a sneak peek at the short that will precede it upon its arrival at your local multiplex. Lava is the latest mini offering from the beloved animation studio, and it showcases what a Pixar musical might look like. The lead character appears to be a giant volcano named Uku, and in this clip he sings us a sweet song about how he’s just looking for “someone to lava.” Director James Ford Murphy tells Yahoo! Movies he drew on a diverse range of inspirations for Uku, including the volcano’s voice actor, Kuana Torres Kahele, Jackie Gleeson from The Honeymooners era, and the bulldog from the Chuck Jones cartoon Feed the Kitty. Disney Pixar has revealed a first clip from Lava.
The video shows Uku - the lead character from director James Ford Murphy's short - engaged in a lonely song.
The living volcano's face was made from a compilation of the film's voice actor/singer Kuana Torres Kahele, Honeymooners star Jackie Gleeson and the bulldog in Chuck Jones's animated classic Feed the Kitty.
"We struggled with it a lot," Murphy told Yahoo. "But I feel like, once we were able to embrace the limitations of it, it unlocked all sorts of possibilities.
"I love that about animation: You can really make a mountain come alive. You can't do that in another medium."
The seven-minute short Lava will screen ahead of Pixar's feature Inside Out in summer 2015.

Disney has released two stills from the short that will be paired with Big Hero 6, called “Feast.” It follows a man’s love life as seen throughout the eyes of his dog, Winston. That is a really fun concept, and the dog is adorable.
Disney/Pixar have also released a clip from their upcoming short “Lava,” which will screen in front of Inside Out starting June 19, 2015. The short, in which a volcano sings about his longing for love, was directed by James Ford Murphy. Murphy was inspired by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s classic mashup of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “What a Wonderful World,” and you can hear it in the song. As for the look of the volcano, according to Yahoo,
To create the face of the mountain, Murphy used an amalgam of the faces of Kuahna Torres Kahele, the musician who is the voice of the mountain; Honeymooners star Jackie Gleeson,...

Salon film critic Matt Zoller Seitz offers a lovely tribute to his wife, Jennifer Dawson, who died five years ago, and powerfully influenced his love of movies (and music). He writes: She loved books, music, TV and film, and was as important an influence in my development as a critic as any teacher or editor I ever had. As is always the case in long relationships, we had certain songs, films, shows and books in common. These were the things we talked about when we weren’t talking about people we knew. Some things belonged to both of us from day one: Martin Scorsese, Frank Sinatra, Shakespeare’s tragedies and sonnets, Tom Lehrer, Pauline Kael, Chuck Jones’ classic short “Feed the Kitty,” “Prime Suspect,” Albert Brooks, Public Enemy, Woody Allen, Looney Tunes, Jim Jarmusch, the Beatles. ... Sondheim. Kander and Ebb. “Feed the Kitty.” “Deadwood.” In the last few years, to greater or lesser degrees,...
