Sex & Nudity

  • In one artfully shot and non-sexualized scene, Monika is shown nude from behind; her breasts are briefly visible from a distance.
  • Implied sex (not shown on camera) between a man and woman. Some kissing and fondling is depicted or implied on camera.
  • A woman is sexually harassed and pinched on the bottom in her workplace.
  • Teenage sexuality is a major theme of the film.

Violence & Gore

  • Early in the film, one male character punches another and knocks him down.
  • An inebriated father strikes his daughter.
  • A male character slaps a female character several times.

Profanity

  • Very mild, as with most early Bergman films.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Almost all characters smoke cigarettes, as was common in 1953 Sweden.
  • Moderate drinking by a number of characters in the movie.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • Unintentional teenage pregnancy and its consequences is a major theme of the film.

Violence & Gore

  • There is a protracted fight scene between Harry and Lelle after Lelle throws their belongings in the water and sets their boat ablaze. It's rather cartoonish and tame by today's standards, although the threat of Monika beating Lelle to death with an oar is rather jarring for a second.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Monika's abusive father is portrayed as drunk in one pivotal scene.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • As in much of Bergman, most of the intensity is emotional, and will probably not resonate with or scare children. In this film, much of it is focused around dissatisfaction with the tedium of everyday life, teenage pregnancy, relationship dissonance, and infidelity within relationships.
  • Two notable exceptions include the fight scene with Lelle at the boat and Monika's capture after trying to steal a roast from the orchard owners. Neither scene is as intense as things commonly scene in films rated PG (US).
