Émile goes to buy an automatic clothes washer for his wife. As a mechanic, he takes care of more cars and with those many cars around, people tend to go farther from Paris for relaxation . Lagny where he goes fishing is about 15 miles east from Paris while Nogent, famous before the war a Sunday destination as show in Carné's 'Nogent, Eldorado du dimanche', was easily reached by train and was about 8 miles. away to the east also.
