- Ben Fraser: [stalling for time] What are you going to do with your end of the money, Red?
- Red: [Sarcastically] I'm going to set up a scholarship at Harvard.
- Marie Gardner: Yesterday, my biggest problem was how I was going to break a date with a fellow I know for tonight. Of course I could call him up and tell him I can't make it. I'm on my way to Wyoming in a pair of field boots, with a man that's wanted for murder.
- James Vanning: If I left you here, they'd find you in no time.
- Marie Gardner: Even if they didn't, I'd still want to go with you.
- [snuggling]
- Marie Gardner: You're the most wanted man I know.
- Marie Gardner: Marie says "Look for me at Robinson's". A prophetic reference to her role in "The Graduate".
- James Vanning: [Seeing a drink next to the barstool he's sitting down at] Is this one free?
- Bartender: She's alone if that's what you mean.
- James Vanning: Vodka on the rocks with a lemon twist.
- Bartender: A little twist or a big twist?
- James Vanning: [Sarcastically] You look like the big twist type.
- Marie Gardner: [after they glance at each other a couple of times] What would you think if I asked you to loan me five dollars?
- Marie Gardner: [after some silence he smiles and picks up his drink] That's what I thought.
- James Vanning: What makes you think I've got five?
- Marie Gardner: You smell like you just came from a barber shop. A man doesn't go to the barber shop when he's down and out.
- James Vanning: Guys have probably been swarming around you since your second teeth came through. Maybe you're disillusioned. I don't know, but I don't think to point where you're ready to throw all men aside.
- [after a pause]
- James Vanning: Do I hear a click?
- Marie Gardner: Yes.
- James Vanning: I'd like to skip all the jockeying around. It saves a lot of grief later on.
- Marie Gardner: What makes you think there's going to be a later on?
- Marie Gardner: What time is it?
- James Vanning: Early.
- Marie Gardner: I have an eight o'clock sitting and a twelve o'clock fashion show.
- James Vanning: You're a model?
- Marie Gardner: How do you think I pay the rent?
- James Vanning: Oh, well, I should have figured your being a model. I mean, believe it or not, I'm an artist.
- [He chuckles]
- Marie Gardner: Soup cans or sunsets?
- James Vanning: Soup cans, toothpaste, automobiles, and girls once in a while.
- John: [after Red has pistol-whipped Vanning into unconsciousness] Feel better?
- Red: Yeah.
- John: Look, Red, tonight's his night. Might be a short one. Might be a long one. But he's gonna keep breathing until we get an answer out of him. You got that?
- Red: [Sarcastically] Oh, John, you got a soft spot!
- John: Like the top of your head. That's your whole trouble. You know that? The top of your head never closed up when you were a kid... neither did your mouth!
- Ben Fraser: I work with the police.
- James Vanning: Oh, well, what'll we do now?
- Ben Fraser: Well, we, you know, walk a little, talk a little.
- James Vanning: About what? Your taking me in?
- Ben Fraser: [laughs] well, there's more to it than that.
- James Vanning: Well, you're the doc.
- Ben Fraser: That's funny you should say that. You know, I always wanted to be a doctor. a;ways wanted to help people.
- James Vanning: You picked a great way to do it.
- Ben Fraser: Anyway, now I want you to help me.
- John: Well, maybe we can get this thing straightened out, and everything will be fine.
- James Vanning: [Sardonically] And "dandy." Don't forget the "dandy."
- John: Oh, yeah - "dandy."
- James Vanning: Anyway, I'm scared. You don't know what it is to live with your back against the wall, Marie. Inside you change. You really change.
- Marie Gardner: You're actually smiling. Back there at the bar you acted as if you had some big trouble on your shoulders.
- James Vanning: They come and they go.
- Marie Gardner: Troubles?
- James Vanning: Smiles.
