Warning: Spoilers
It turns out that nobody has posted a review of this movie, which makes yours truly the first. I remember catching EAST OF KILIMANJARO for the first time on Armed Forces Television (AFRTS) while stationed in West Germany in the early 1980s, but only a portion of it. Then I saw it again recently as part of a multi-DVD movie package. In this Italian-British-American opus, Marshall Thompson leads the small cast as roving international journalist and freelance photographer Marsh Connors, who seems to be one of those with a honeybabe in every big-deal capital city around the world. Our boy gets wind of a viral epidemic that''s been killing off cattle in Tanganyika, so he hies himself there and tries to hook up with lovely virologist Marie Avadon (played by Gaby Andre). Trouble is, she has eyes only for colleague Fariso Trini (played by Fausto Tozzi). The trio find out what's been behind the outbreak: a flock of vultures. They are considered sacred by the local tribesmen, so they can't be killed off. The romance may be eh, feh, and meh, but EAST OF KILIMANJARO benefits from some great on-location cinematography, especially when it was shot in widescreen Vistarama. It's hard to picture Marshall Thompson as a ladies' man in this flick. Paul Newman? Certainly. Steve McQueen? Absolutely. Marshall Thompson? I don't think so. But he did reprise his Marsh Connors role in THE MIGHTY JUNGLE (1964). And he did star in the television series DAKTARI. This movie is worth searching out in light of the current COVID-19 pandemic and the Ebola outbreak that occurred years ago. Go and find it. It's in the public domain. Thanks for reading this review.
