- Mrs. Nichols: Betsy Abel. Two months ago she had an illegitimate baby, a baby boy, who is now in the custody of her mother. Her mother's boyfriend is a taxi driver with a police record. The girl won't tell who the father is; so, we have another inmate. She's assigned to your cottage. Well, I suppose we better look the little criminal over.
- Betsy Abel: I hate her.
- Mrs. Nichols: Why do you hate her so much?
- Betsy Abel: That's my business.
- Mrs. Nichols: No, Betsy. From now on, that's our business. Now try to tell us why.
- Betsy Abel: I hate her because she's old. Because she's old and stringy.
- Mrs. Nichols: I don't think that's a very good reason for hating people.
- Betsy Abel: That's because you're old and stringy too! I hate old people! I hate 'em!
- Trixie Budlong: That's terrific! You gonna run?
- Green Eyes: There's less than a month to go, I wouldn't run now if they started using bullwhips round this joint.
- Maggie Wilson: It's against the law.
- Green Eyes: So what? He's against the law, too. It was against the law for him to be born, but he was. Everything that's natural is against the law.
- Green Eyes: What can she do? She's heat. She's just like the rest of them. She's heat and she's got to do it.
- Mrs. Nichols: Because of this criminal loyalty to each other, you refuse to cooperate.
- Green Eyes: You mean fink! I wouldn't tell you anything if you kept me here till I'm as *old* as you are.
- Mrs. Nichols: That will do, Phyllis.
