Ronald Howard stars with Patricia Roc and Michael Gough in "The House in the Woods" from 1957.
Roc and Gough play Carol and Geoffrey Carter, who live in an apartment building in London. Everyone is friends with everyone else in the building; there are always parties, and Geoffrey hates it. He feels he can't get on with his writing in that atmosphere.
The couple go to look at a cottage where an widowed artist, Spencer Roland (Howard) lives. He is leaving to travel in about a week. He rents them the cottage and invites them to move in early.
Eventually Geoffrey picks up on a few lies Spencer has told him; he warns them not to go into the nearby woods, and that he never does. Yet it's evident that he does, as Geoffrey finds his cigarette butts there. Then he says his wife has been dead for two years. Geoffrey finds a book she signed to him two months ago.
In the meantime, he has asked to paint Carol.
Major spoiler ahead: No phone, first sign of life is 5 miles away. Yet when the Gough character returns from the woods, he says the police are on their way. How did he manage that? Telepathy? He was gone for maybe 5 minutes.
A good cast in this B movie, where the story is obvious. Ronald Howard was Leslie Howard's son but didn't follow his dad's career trajectory. He starred in a one-year British TV series of Sherlock Holmes and did quite a bit of television.
Another British B - I find them kind of fun.
