David Ladd's widowed father wants to get remarried, but his son objects. So David and his dog get sent to the ranch of his grandfather, Chill Wills. David has a lot of fun and adventures exploring, but when Patricia Wymore shows up with her race horse, the parts of the plot begin to come together with its themes of loneliness.

The script by Charles Hoffman seems to be written to keep the dialogue to a minimum, so the words actually spoken sometimes carry more weight than they can bear. However, Wills and Rex Lease as Miss Wymore's estranged husband are up to their tasks, and the story about the love of a boy for his dog is a classic one.
