Hayao Miyazaki’s cerebral fantasy film The Boy and the Heron is flying onto Max in the United States after winning the Best Animated Feature Oscar at this year’s awards ceremony. In addition to bringing Miyazaki’s latest breath-taking animated feature to the streaming platform, Warner Bros. Per the new deal, Max will be the future home of The Boy and the Heron, with a premiere date to be announced later this year. The agreement also secures exclusivity on Max for other films in Studio Ghibli’s library, including Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Porco Rosso, and more.

The Netflix original Griselda has taken the world by storm, thanks to its fast-paced storytelling and immersive visuals. It really transports you to late-’70s Miami with its costumes and visuals. I suppose it’s one of those shows that you can gobble up in one sitting, so you’ll be looking for some sort of replacement now that it’s over. The show tells the story of Griselda Blanco, aka the Godmother, who took over the drug scene in Miami soon after she killed her second husband and fled with her kids from Medellín to Miami. Although her intention was to sell one brick of coke and set up a new life for herself, circumstances led to a completely different chain of events. We know you’re as addicted to these shows as the cokeheads who fell at the Godmother’s feet. The rise of the Godmother was quick and dramatic,...

In 2023, the world of streaming platforms experienced significant turbulence, characterized by a prolonged strike involving writers and actors, numerous platform mergers, and a mix of show launches and cancellations. As the year concluded, certain new releases stood out for their impact on the streaming industry.
Netflix led the charge, claiming half of the top 10 spots for the most in-demand streaming originals of 2023. The standout was the live-action adaptation of the anime “One Piece,” which topped the list. Released in August, it garnered a remarkable 52.8 times the average demand of other shows in its first month.
Other Netflix hits included the adult animated series “Blue Eye Samurai” at No. 5, the action-packed “The Night Agent” at No. 8, the competitive reality show “Squid Game: The Challenge” at No. 9 and “The Fall of the House of Usher,” a miniseries inspired by Edgar Allan Poe, claiming the 10th spot.

Following the arrival of Godzilla Minus One in theaters, Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli‘s latest masterstroke, The Boy and the Heron, is already flying high at the December box office! Analysts say The Boy and the Heron could soar to the number one spot this weekend after earning $2.39M in Thursday previews, with a chance to collect $10M+ over the next few days.
This trend is an excellent look for films stomping out of Japan and into domestic theaters. Godzilla Minus One roared last weekend with $2.1M in previews before going nuclear with $4.7M on Friday and a 3-day total of $11.4M across 2,308 theaters. Meanwhile, The Boy and the Heron opened on 1,774 screens across the United States and Canada, expanding to 2,205 markets this weekend.

Roger Corman's 1960 feature films "House of Usher" was the first film in a long series of Edgar Allan Poe-based movies at American International Pictures. From 1960 to 1964, Corman directed eight Poe films, with all but one of them starring Vincent Price. After "House of Usher," Corman made "The Pit and the Pendulum," "The Premature Burial," the anthology film "Tales of Terror," "The Raven," "The Haunted Palace," "The Masque of the Red Death," and "The Tomb of Ligeia." Technically, 1963's "The Haunted Palace" isn't a Poe movie. It was named after Poe's 1893 poem but was in fact based on the 1927 short novel "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" by H.P. Lovecraft. Poe, it seems, was a bigger marquee name than Lovecraft, so the latter author's story was merely folded into Corman's short-lived but well-remembered Poe subgenre.

The Fall of the House of Usher has now been streaming on Netflix for over a week, and its viewership has now been revealed. But is Season 2 on the table?
The Haunting of Hill House creator Mike Flanagan recently returned to Netflix with his latest horror series The Fall of the House of Usher, adapting the 1839 short story from Edgar Allan Poe.
As usual for a new horror show in the Flanaverse - a term coined for Flanagan's various works - House of Usher unites a stacked cast, one member of which had to be replaced mid-production due to controversy and reports of on-set misconduct.

Mike Flanagan, the filmmaker behind Netflix horror shows like "The Haunting of Hill House," "Midnight Mass," and the recently released "The Fall of the House of Usher," has a stable of actors he uses over and over again. Folks like Carla Gugino, Kate Sigel, Rahul Kohli, Henry Thomas, and more. It's fun to see these actors pop up again and again in Flanagan's work, and it is just as fun when he adds a new player to the mix. One such new player is none other than Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill. In "House of Usher," Hamill plays Arthur Pym, attorney and fixer to the infamous Usher family.
Hamill is clearly having a lot of fun with the role, adopting a gruff voice and playing the morally dubious Pym as a weird little guy. Hamill fits in perfectly with Flanagan's usual ensemble, and he makes the most of his limited...

When cinephiles of a certain sensibility talk about the best decades for horror, they’ll probably point to the 1980s with its explosion of cutting-edge special effects and home video-induced demand for material. Or they might point to the era of Universal Pictures’ domination in the 1930s, followed up then by the moody Val Lewton thrillers of the 1940s. Maybe even a very unpopular kid will try to make an argument for the 2010s, at least until everyone pulls the A24 hat over his eyes and kicks him out.
But moviegoers would be foolish to overlook the 1960s. The decade saw not only two amazing horror flicks from Alfred Hitchcock but also caught the genre in an interesting time of transition. Filmmakers built on the Gothic approach of previous decades by adding a psychological dimension, finding new chills in an established model. Furthermore, the decade saw the first steps toward the ho,...

Spoilers for "The Fall of the House of Usher" follow.
You might call Carla Gugino Mike Flanagan's secret weapon. The actor has worked with Flanagan on multiple occasions, from "The Haunting of Hill House" to "Gerald's Game," and beyond. Their latest collaboration is "The Fall of the House of Usher," an Edgar Allan Poe-infused series now streaming on Netflix. In the series, Gugino plays Verna, a mysterious, supernatural woman who has a habit of popping up seemingly everywhere in various forms. And believe it or not, one of those forms is that of a chimpanzee. Sort of.
In the series, the wealthy, corrupt Usher family, which made a fortune in the pharmaceutical industry, finds themselves being picked off one by one in increasingly gruesome ways (inspired by Edgar Allan Poe stories). Mike Flanagan is back with his new horror series, The Fall of the House of Usher, an adaptation of the famous Edgar Allan Poe short story, and as you would expect, he has pretty much delivered it. It does have all the familiar traits of Flanagan’s work, along with a dash of snarky, Succession-like humor. The series has at least two standout acting performances, which is also something we get to see in most Flanagan projects. With The Fall of the House of Usher now out in the open, I thought it was a good time to make a list of the best acting performances in Mike Flanagan movies and series. We have picked ten performances, and believe me, it was not an easy thing to do.

This article contains spoilers for Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher.
As its title suggests, Mike Flanagan’s latest project for Netflix, The Fall of the House of Usher, is an intensely Edgar Allan Poe affair. The eight-episode series, which follows the modern day rise and fall of fictional opioid giant Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, is based on not only Poe’s epic “The Fall of the House of Usher” but many of his other seminal classics as well.
Fittingly, pretty much every character on the show is named after an Edgar Allan Poe creation. These range from the blindingly obvious (Bruce Greenwood’s Roderick Usher and Mary McDonnell’s Madeline Usher) to the less obvious (Katie Parker’s Annabel Lee) to the downright obscure (T’Nia Miller’s Victorine Lafourcade). One of The Fall of the House of Usher‘s most important characters, however, doesn’t appear to have...

The Fall of the House of Usher is filmmaker Mike Flanagan’s gloriously morbid remix of author Edgar Allen Poe’s best-known stories and poems, and it’s winning raves from critics (with a 92 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes). Even those totally unfamiliar with Poe probably found some glimmer of recognition amid the show’s nods to his best-known tales — such as “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “The Raven” and “The Cask of Amontillado” — given how Poe’s stories have threaded through pop culture over the last 175 years or so.
But even Poe superfans probably couldn’t spot all the references — because there are dozens scattered throughout the show’s eight Gothic episodes.
So here they are (The Hollywood Reporter compiled this based on notes supplied by the show’s production team — I’m not going to pretend to be this smart; also, there’s always a chance that a...

Spoilers for "The Fall of the House of Usher" follow.
As horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan has gone from production to production, he's assembled a wholesale acting troupe along the way. Kate Siegel (his wife), Henry Thomas, Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood, Carl Lumbly, Michael Trucco, Rahul Kohli, Annabeth Gish — they're all in Flanagan's latest, "The Fall of the House of Usher," and if you look back through his filmography, you'll recognize their faces somewhere.
That said, Flanagan always includes a few actors who are new to him, and "House of Usher" is no different. One of those new faces is one that's otherwise eminently familiar: Mark Hamill. Like the rest of the main cast, Hamill's part is named after an Edgar Allan Poe character. In his case, the eponymous protagonist of "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket."

Following the breakout success of Shirley Jackson adaptation "The Haunting of Hill House," horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan returned to Netflix with a number of other spooky tales, and today opened the doors to his final cursed house in "The Fall of the House of Usher." Loosely based on the collected works of Edgar Allan Poe, the series explores the corrupted legacy of pharmaceutical magnate Roderick Usher and the grim deaths of his spoiled adult children.
Flanagan is known for slow-burn stories that are heavy on emotion, but "The Fall of the House of Usher" is a little different. In Flanagan's own words, "'Hill House' is kind of a string quartet, and '[The Haunting of] Bly Manor' is this delicate, kind of beautiful piece of classical piano music, and 'The Fall of the House of Usher' is heavy metal." This latest serving of scares certainly has a lot more gore than any of Flanagan's previous works,...

Medical horror has always been central to the mysterious Edgar Allan Poe short story, "The Fall of the House of Usher." It opens when an unnamed narrator receives a letter from the ill Roderick Usher, whose sister, Madeline is experiencing cataleptic trances from an illness of her own. When she eventually passes, Roderick fears her body will be analyzed for medical study and embalmed. Instead of giving her over for an autopsy, Roderick decides to keep her in the family tomb for two weeks. Alas, in typical Poe fashion, it is revealed at the end that Madeline was entombed before she had actually passed.
In Mike Flanagan's "The Fall of the House of Usher," the titular family's relationship with medicine is generational. In this updated story, Roderick and Madeline's mother Eliza worked for a pharmaceutical company while also being a devout woman who believed God could heal better than any medicine.

Mike Flanagan's latest horror mini-series, "The Fall of the House of Usher," transposes the stories of Edgar Allan Poe to the 21st century. In this retelling, "The House of Usher" is a nouveau riche dynasty and the owners of a pharmaceutical corporation, Fortunato. Twin siblings Roderick (Bruce Greenwood) and Madeline (Mary McDonnell) sit at the head of that table, with other seats filled by Roderick's spoiled adult children -- six of them, from five different mothers, who all stand to inherit a piece of his fortune. Comparisons to the recently concluded "Succession" have already begun.
Like the Roy family in "Succession," the Ushers have made their fortune by poisoning society. The Roys, as the owners of media conglomerate Waystar Royco, reshaped the mind of the American consumer with far-right political propaganda. Their "news" network, Atn, is Fox in all but name.

"No good thing lasts forever" feels like the sort of poignant theme you'd expect to pop up in a Mike Flanagan horror project. So it goes in real life, too, with Flanagan's latest series, the Edgar Allan Poe-inspired modern Gothic drama "The Fall of the House of Usher" (read /Film's review by Chris Evangelista here), slated to serve as his final Netflix offering.
Since his breakout success on the horror film "Oculus," Flanagan has become synonymous with the streamer's scarier output. In addition to directing Netflix's "Gerald's Game" (an all-timer among Stephen King film adaptations that features one of the gnarliest moments put to screen in recent memory), he created the company's acclaimed "Haunting" anthology series, as well as the polarizing but deeply fascinating religious horror drama show "Midnight Mass." Among the glut of programming that has either documented the ills of the pharmaceutical industry (Hulu’s “Dopesick” and Netflix’s “Painkiller”) or the rotted core of the uber rich one wouldn’t necessarily expect another iteration to come from Netflix’s horror TV impresario Mike Flanagan. Even more surprising would be that such an allegory would be grafted onto the stories of Edgar Allan Poe.
It’s a bit of a curious and bold gambit on paper — a limited series that loosely bases each episode off of a different Poe work (its title comes from a Poe story of the same name), all of which adds up to a big pharma horror parable — but who better to pull it off than Flanagan? The series creator, who co-wrote the show and directs half of its episodes, has become a sturdy (and incredibly popular) hand behind a consistent stream of ambitious...

Never say “nevermore” when it comes to the enduringly macabre appeal of Edgar Allan Poe, the latest inspiration for Mike Flanagan to weave contemporary horrors from iconic literary texts. Black cat? Tell-tale heart? Pit and the pendulum? All accounted for, and more, in Netflix‘s The Fall of the House of Usher, whose myriad references to Poe’s fever dreams range from clever to obvious. Far from the Gothic world of the original 1839 short story, the modern House of Usher is a corporate immorality tale — part Dopesick, part Succession — that presents the Ushers as a venal pharmaceutical dynasty dealt a bloody hand of karmic justice by a mischievous shape-shifting vixen (the perfectly cast Carla Gugino). “I love how deliciously, pointlessly mean you lot can be,” she observes before lowering the boom on one of her prey. While Poe acolytes can entertain themselves by keeping a tally of all the callouts...

With the WGA-Strike officially over, there seems to be the first real lull due to the impact of it. October still has plenty of series worth exploring, especially notable titles such as the latest from Mike Flannigan and the second season of the popular “Our Flag Means Death,” but the lineup isn’t quite as bulked up as some of the more recent months. That said, at the very least, it offers up time to explore older series we might not have gotten around to yet, dig deep into the ones being released, and compare to others of its ilk — how does “Loki” stand up to the most recent MCU offerings — and, in the spirit of the month, dabble in some of the best horror / Halloween related episodes of TV history.

Tim Burton’s classic movie, Edward Scissorhands, tells the story of Edward (Johnny Depp), an artificial man constructed of scissor blades, who falls in love with Kim (Winona Ryder) after getting taken in by a suburban family. The heartwarming, whimsical film from the ’90s still has a following today. So, where is the Edward Scissorhands cast now? Here’s what to know.
Where is ‘Edward Scissorhands’ cast member Johnny Depp now?
Johnny Depp played Edward, the artificially constructed, soft-spoken man who was known for his scissor hands. So, where is the most famous Edward Scissorhands cast member now?
Depp received a lot of press in 2022 due to his trial against Amber Heard. He accused Heard of fabricating domestic abuse accusations. Depp resigned from his role in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore during the process due to his crumbling reputation. But now, it looks like he’s trying to make a comeback.

For the past five decades, the incredible story of Elton John and Bernie Taupin’s partnership has been told largely by Elton. That’s finally changing on September 12 with the release of Taupin’s memoir Scattershot: Life, Music, Elton, and Me. It’s a non-traditional work that leaps through time, focusing on the duo’s early struggles in the Sixties, the creation of some of their greatest songs, and Taupin’s private life on his California ranch, far from the searing spotlight of fame. “This is the most glorious of books,...

When Is The Netflix Series The Fall Of The House Of Usher Coming? Well, in the early days when Hollywood was nothing but vast expanses of orange groves, and the cinematic industry found its epicenter in Fort Lee, New Jersey, they were already turning books into movies.
In 1899, they made the first movie based on a play by Shakespeare (called King John), and in 1909, they turned Victor Hugo’s book Les Misérables into the first long movie.
Some directors, like Alfred Hitchcock, mainly used stories from books to make their movies.
People like the idea because books have detailed stories and interesting characters, and when they see these on screen, it feels like the book is coming to life. But there’s a problem: people often say, “The book was better than the movie.”
A horror director named Mike Flanagan doesn’t worry too much about making the movie exactly like the book.

Mike Flanagan, the master of soulful horror whose previous Netflix series include "The Haunting of Hill House," "The Haunting of Bly Manor," "Midnight Mass," and "The Midnight Club," is returning this year with a mix of familiar cast members and fresh faces for "The Fall of the House of Usher." Though it takes its name from the short story by Edgar Allan Poe, the series is set in the modern era and incorporates a number of other Poe tales.
Netflix has built up a solid library of original horror series, from mega-hit "Stranger Things" to lesser-recognized gems like "Marianne." Following the success of "The Haunting Hill House," Netflix inked a multi-year overall television deal with Flanagan and his longtime producing partner, Trevor Macy. The pair were poached by Amazon in December 2022, so "The Fall of the House of Usher" will be the last "Flana-verse" show to arrive on Netflix for the foreseeable future.

It was more than a little heartening to see Roger Corman paid tribute by Quentin Tarantino at Cannes’ closing night. By now the director-producer-mogul’s imprint on cinema is understood to eclipse, rough estimate, 99.5% of anybody who’s touched the medium, but on a night for celebrating what’s new, trend-following, and manicured it could’ve hardly been more necessary. Thus I’m further heartened seeing the Criterion Channel will host a retrospective of Corman’s Edgar Allan Poe adaptations running eight films and aptly titled “Grindhouse Gothic,” though I might save the selections for October.
Centerpiece, though, is a hip hop series including Bill Duke’s superb Deep Cover, Ghost Dog, and numerous documentaries––among them Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest, making Michael Rapaport a Criterion-approved auteur. Chris Alexander is nervous. Although he’s known filmmaking legend Roger Corman for 20 years, having interviewed him and engaged with him on a personal level numerous times over two decades, he’s never met the man in person.

F. Murray Abraham apologized on Thursday for the inappropriate conduct that got him fired from the Apple TV+ series “Mythic Quest.”
“This is a sincere and deeply felt apology,” he said in the statement. “Though never my intention to offend anyone, I told jokes, nothing more, that upset some of my colleagues and as a result lost a great job with wonderful people. I have grown in my understanding from this experience, and I hope they will forgive me.”
Rolling Stone reported earlier this week that the “Amadeus” star was fired after two complaints of sexual misconduct, but did not go into specifics. A production source said that after the first incident, Abraham was “given a warning and told to keep away from some of the show’s actresses.” After a second complaint, he was let go.

F. Murray Abraham’s sudden exit from “Mythic Quest” last April was due to sexual misconduct complaints, according to a Monday report from Rolling Stone.
Although the exact nature of his behavior was not detailed, a production source said that Abraham was “given a warning and told to keep away from some of the show’s actresses.” After a second complaint, series creator and star Rob McElhenney opted to let him go, Rolling Stone reports.
“It’s a bummer to not have Murray in this season,” McElhenney told Variety at the time of saying goodbye to Abraham’s character, sci-fi author C.W. Longbottom. “But we recognize that C.W. is a beloved character and obviously a huge part of the show. So, we made sure that we have a really fitting tribute to him. We definitely address it in a big way.”

Throwback horror is a huge genre business. Give the Directors, actors, crew, and everyone to work in a time when the genre was in an age when anyone with a blade, drill, screwdriver, or some other implement could wreak revenge. When sexual repression, peer pressure, and social mores were simpler and easy to comprehend. Usher in (not the House of Usher) the Bayview Entertainment’s DVD release of Grainger Hines’s “haunted house” thriller, The Mill (2008).
The film concerns events in an abandoned mill in which eight college kids get up to sex, fun, drinking, drugs, and adventure all in the name of partying. Those heady days of the carnal or in this case, what it tries to do is be charnel. The eight enter a night of horror filled with snakes, wild dogs, tarantulas, and a pack of rats. While Frank Langella is said to be considering legal action after being fired from Netflix’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” for his “inappropriate” behavior, more details are emerging about what he is alleged to have said and done that made cast and crew so uncomfortable around him.
Deadline reported on Friday that, according to “a number of people on or close to the Netflix production,” the Tony winner often indulged in graphic discussions about his own sex life and quizzed people on set about theirs.
One production source said, “He spoke graphically about his own sexual history to many people even as they were trying to get out of those conversations,” and another added, “He asked cast members about their sexual experiences.”

Only two weeks after the news broke that actor Frank Langella would be removed from the production of Mike Flanagan's currently-filming Netflix series "The Fall of the House of Usher," as a result of a sexual harassment investigation, we now know which actor will be stepping in to replace Langella in extensive reshoots. Frequent Flanagan collaborator Bruce Greenwood has been tapped for the newly recast role of Roderick Usher in the limited series, The Hollywood Reporter revealed. The announcement was also accompanied by Flanagan himself weighing in on Twitter (with a helpful link to Greenwood's IMDb page!), welcoming the successful actor into the fold.

One of the oldest genre tropes imaginable, the use of the haunted house for a setting, offers up countless scenarios over the ages of people investigating the same old situations. From “The Old Dark House” to “The Cat and the Canary,” “The Uninvited” and “The House of Usher” to “The Amityville Horror” and “The Conjuring” to name just a couple, this timeless quality has brought about some of the best and worst the genre has seen due to so many trying their hand at the concept. Milind Rau is one of the latest to do so with his Tamil-lensed genre effort that falls more on the side of the heavyweights in the scene despite falling just short of the marks it set.

Last year for Indie Horror Month, I had the pleasure of diving into the history of the cult classic studio New World Pictures. It was such a blast peeking behind the curtain of low-budget genre production in the ’70s and ’80s that I figured it would be fun to go back in time a little further and explore American International Pictures, a studio that set the standard in the mid-20th century for churning out cheap, profitable, and often truly memorable films across a variety of genres.
