Charles Boyer: Cesar

Quotes

  • Cesar : [strikes a match, holds it up then blows it out]  You know, Marius, a woman's honor is like a match... you can only use it once.

  • Cesar : [Looking at the new expedition preparing to sail out]  Some scientists! None of them a day over thirty-five!

  • Cesar : [Angry, after Marius has left home, having shipped out on the scientific sailing ship]  Does he have to sail for a living? Does Monsieur Panisse sail? Oh, oh no. He's not so stupid! He *makes* sails! Yes... so that the wind... can take away... other people's CHILDREN!

  • Cesar : [Indicating Marius' friend]  Is that coffee for him?

Marius : Yes. Want a cup?

    Cesar : No.

    Marius : Why not?

Cesar : Because if we drink everything free, there would be nothing left for the customers!

  • Cesar : Panisse is his father. Why, when this child came into the world, He weighed eight pounds of his mother flesh. Now he weighs 23. You know what those extra 15 pounds are? Love. Love doesn't weigh very much. It's like cigarette smoke, it takes a lot of love To make 15 pounds. I gave my share, and Fanny, too. But the big weight, the bulk, Panisse gave it.

  • Cesar : You know Marius, I think it's about time you got married.

    Marius : Me? Why?

Cesar : Now now, Marius. Don't take me for an idiot. I know you love Fanny.

    Marius : Who told you?

Cesar : [Sarcastic]  My little finger.

Marius : Then that little finger is not so bright.

  • Cesar : [Talking to his son Marius]  You know, sometimes I say that you make my life miserable. It's not true.

  • Fanny : I have no desire to be a man. Have another whiff.

    Cesar : [sniffs]  Delicious.

  • Fanny : Here, inhale.

Cesar : [smells Fanny's arm]  It's not sardine.

    Fanny : It's perfume!

Cesar : Oh! Is it very expensive?

Fanny : Of course not. But it is perfume! Mama give it to me. She said, uh, today, daughter, you are a woman.

  • Cesar : It's annoying, but things will work out. Hey, hey, hey, hey! Don't cry into the rolls. No, they're salty enough.

  • Fanny : Panisse and I are going to be married.

    Cesar : I don't believe it.

    Panisse : I believe it.

Cesar : It's your mother! Your mother loves Panisse's money. And she has sold you like a - like a little African slave!
