This was the first Toho tokusatsu (special effects) film to use the huge Toho Big Pool, which was constructed by Eiji Tsuburaya and his special effects unit in the Toho back lot especially for this film. It would be used in all water scenes for subsequent Toho tokusatsu films until Godzilla: Final Wars (2004), after which it was demolished when Toho planned a studio remodeling.
In the 1960s, Toho re-released this film at the bottom of a double feature with a re-release Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" (1954).

The Japanese planes were wooden mock-ups. Their wings folded by means of ordinary door hinges. All flying planes, except for a few T-6 trainers attacking the carrier set, were models.
