"I tre volti della paura" is Italian and roughly means "the three faces of fear".
Details of this story change slightly over the past fifty-three years, but the meat of the story is as follows.
One of the members of the band that would become Black Sabbath (they were going by Earth at the time) walked past a cinema that was showing I tre volti della paura at the time. Commonly, even today, foreign titles are translated into things that bear no relation to the real meaning of the original title. In this case, the film was being sold in England as Black Sabbath.
Discussion occurred between the band members about why people pay money to go and watch films that scare them. The idea was floated to make music that would scare people. Jamming and writing eventually produced a song about a man witnessing Satan coming to end the world, and they called this song Black Sabbath. Upon playing what would become the finished version of the song, they made the choice to change the band's name to Black Sabbath and continue writing music in this fashion.
Worth noting is that whilst the first, untitled Black Sabbath album is more of a blues record with some doom metal elements, their second album, Paranoid, followed the "music to scare people" template much closer.
