The Best Man (1964) Poster

(1964)

Ann Sothern: Sue Ellen Gamadge

Quotes

  • Sue Ellen Gamadge : You are not the ideal candidate for the women.

William Russell : Which women do you have in mind?

Sue Ellen Gamadge : The women don't like you trying to be funny all the time.

William Russell : Oh, that is a flaw. I agree.

Sue Ellen Gamadge : Yes. They want a regular kind of man, like, well, like General Eisenhower, with that nice smile. And he's not pushy or aggressive, or any of those things we women don't like in our men. He was just grand. Why, you could imagine him washing up after dinner, or listening to his wife's views on important matters.

William Russell : Yes, indeed you can.

Sue Ellen Gamadge : So just don't try to be smart aleck and talk over our poor heads.

  • Sue Ellen Gamadge : [to William Russell]  We want to see a lot more of your wife - a great deal more. You know, there are still people who don't trust the English.

Don Cantwell : Mrs. Russell was sick during the primaries.

Sue Ellen Gamadge : Yes, yes, yes. I know. But, she has to be at your side at all times. She must seem to be advising you. It did Adlai Stevenson great harm not having a wife and trying to be funny all at the same time, too. Great harm.

  • Sue Ellen Gamadge : I *love* eggheads in politics. Yes, yes. I mean it. I really do. You professors give a tone to these conventions. Of course, a lot of the women don't like them; but, I do.

  • Sue Ellen Gamadge : Oh, yes, yes. Us girls are going to Hustle with Russell. He's our candidate.

  • Sue Ellen Gamadge : Love it. Absolutely love it. Couldn't look better. I mean it. I like the whole thing. Now, my dear, when you are First Lady remember this: don't do too much like Mrs. Roosevelt. The women didn't like that. On the other hand, don't do too little like Mrs. Eisenhower. The women didn't like that either. All in all, Grace Coolidge was *really* the best, bless her heart.

  • Sue Ellen Gamadge : I'm a loyal party worker and the women are solidly behind Bill Russell.

Mabel Cantwell : Under him is there more usual position. Sex, sex, sex, morning, noon and night with Bill Russell.

Sue Ellen Gamadge : Oh, Mabel.

Mabel Cantwell : And that's just plain immature.
