Seventy Casanova's.
morrison-dylan-fan12 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Getting close to 1,500 reviews,I started to decide what film to view that stars the ravishingly beautiful Michelle Mercier. While looking for info on Mario Bava's Danger Diabolik,I found out that Giallo queen (and Diabolik star) Marisa Mell appeared in Mercier movie! Which led to me counting the 70 Casanova's.

The plot:

Caught staging a fake break-in after telling his girlfriend he had to go to a NATO meeting, Il maggiore Andrea Rossi-Colombotti is told by his girlfriend Noelle that he is impotent, and only way he can get excited is by staging fake events where his life is at risk. Going to a therapist, Colombotti uncovers his Casanova lust for danger. Trying to hold back,Colombotti finds the eyes of new ladies too tough to resist.

View on the film:

Opening with animated credits, co-writer/(with Agenore Incrocci/Furio Scarpelli/ Tonino Guerra/Giorgio Salvioni and Suso Cecchi D'Amico) director Mario Monicelli & cinematographer Aldo Tonti give this "70" Casanova gallons of 60's chic, with each of Colombotti's brief encounters taking place against a plush 60's backdrop of bright primary colours giving the movie a fluffy atmosphere. Displaying some skin of his leading ladies, Monicelli gives the tales a friendly, cheeky mood,as extended sight-gags bounce around with cartoon sound effects.

Whilst not an "official" anthology title, the writers stray very close to the format, from the mix of each meeting/story Colombotti has with a woman varying from 15 minutes,to in one case under two minutes, and Colombotti's attempts to runaway becoming increasingly peculiar. Leaving no time to give the characters the smallest hint of depth over 110 minutes, the writers make everyone so fleeting that the situation-led jokes dry up before they hit their punchlines, due to their being minimal relationships built with their Casanova.

Unintentionally sending Colombotti on his adventures, Michèle Mercier gives a glamorous performance as Noelle, which stands out thanks to Mercier giving Noelle an awareness of Colombotti's games. Linking each "story" Marcello Mastroianni rids the grating aspects of Colombotti's "troubles" with layers of charm that entices the ladies and the viewer,as Casanova gets to 70.

One-joke film; not bad for 1960s buffs
gridoon202426 February 2011
Warning: Spoilers
One-joke premise (Mastroianni can't get aroused sexually unless there is the element of danger involved - that's literally ALL the story is about) is slickly carried out, with location filming around Europe, a jaunty music score, and a parade of luscious 1960s beauties (there is a certain mystique about women on film during that decade that has yet to be recaptured, and probably never will), but the film is too long and not terribly funny, or sexy for that matter. Yet it does feel very "60s", so fans of that cinematic decade will probably enjoy it more than the general population. Warning to Margaret Lee followers: don't be fooled by her being on the Region 2 DVD cover, her role is under a minute long! ** out of 4.

Colourful Sixties Italian comedy
michelerealini20 November 2004
"Casanova '70" is a colourful movie directed by Mario Monicelli, one of the Italian comedy masters. The film follows the sexual adventures of Andrea (Marcello Mastroianni), a handsome "Casanova" who thinks being impotent, in reality he only needs danger for being excited and conquer women...

The film is a product of its time (we clearly see that we're in 1965!), but it's funny and teases the myth of Italian "macho". The merit of the picture is talking about sex without being vulgar. Mastroianni shows a comical approach and is at ease, also the rest of the cast enjoy (we see, among others, gorgeous women like Virna Lisi, Michèle Mercier and Marisa Mell...). In a role -Mell's husband- we find Italian director Marco Ferreri, famous for "outrageous" movies like "La grande bouffe", "Tales of ordinary madness", "Bye bye Monkey" and long time friend of Marcello Mastroianni.

Once more, when we see such films we miss an extremely vivacious Italian cinema which doesn't exist any more.

An excellent, underrated Italian comedy
pgetsos8 June 2015
It's an excellent comedy, with multiple moments of laughter, 2 of the most beautiful women in the world at that moment, and a fantastic appearance from Mastroianni.

The plot is simple, yet effective enough to develop feelings for "Andrea", in his continuous search of sexual pleasure under danger.

The production is in rather good shape, despite being 50-years old film. I just have some small complains about the sound, sometimes is a bit off.

It's really a shame this film isn't more well-known. Really recommended!

Casanova 70
BandSAboutMovies31 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Casanova '70 was on Chiller Theater on Saturday, September 13, 1969. Well, kind of. Chiller Theater temporarily became known as The Saturday Late Show and Bill Cardille hosted the first movie from a living room set. For the second feature, Chilly Billy returned to the Laboratory set. The second movie was Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Woman. This didn't last long but the movies shown were Crazy Desire, No Love for Johnnie, The Reluctant Spy, The 10th Victim and Dingaka before taking a week off for Halloween. The Saturday Late Show continued by showing Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow; The Easy Life; Sins of Casanova; The Success; Red Culottes; Marriage, Italian-Style; Boccaccio '70; The Naked Kiss and The Bigamist. On January 3, 1970, Chiller Theater stopped showing non-horror films and was back to normal. I've always thought that Count Floyd showing non-horror movies likeIngmar Burgma"s Whispers of the Wolf and trying to sell them as scary came from this time. Joe Flaherty was from Pittsburgh and was so complete with his Chiller Theater impression that Count Floyd was often joined by a sidekick known as The Pittsburgh Midget, played by Flaherty's brother Paul Flaherty. He's a nod to Stefan, the Castle Prankster, who was played by Stephen Michael Luncinski on Chiller Theater.

Directed by Mario Monicelli, this may be one of the few movies nominated for an Oscar that played Pittsburgh's Chiller Theater. It's all about NATO officer Andrea Rossi-Colombotti (Marcello Mastroianni), a lover who can only perform with women when he might get killed. His psychiatrist recommends that instead of sex, he seeks out the spiritual and emotional qualities in women. Of course, he's in an Italian comedy, so that's not happening.

He almost marries the religious Gigliola (Virna Lisi) but days before he says "I do," a liontamer (Liana Orfei, who really did that in the circus before being in movies like Mill of the Stone Women) dares any man to kiss her while she's surrounded by the deadly beasts. He can't resist this and is alone again. She tries to stay with him because she's his true love, but he can't ruin her life with his sickness. By the end, she even marries him, even if he can't be cured.

Then again, this movie has so many gorgeous actresses for him to nearly be killed over, including Rosemary Dexter (Marquis de Sade: Justine), Seyna Seyn (Flashman), Jolanda Modio (Face to Face), Margaret Lee (Kiss the Girls and Make Them Die), Moira Orfei (the queen of the Italian circus who was known as Moira of the Elephants), Beba Loncar (Some Girls Do), Michèle Mercier (Web of the Spider) and Marisa Mell (Marta) in her first Italian film.

Prime Italian pulchritude perfectly played off Marcello Mastroianni
kevinolzak26 April 2020
1965's "Casanova '70" may be a one joke plot from director Mario Monicelli and producer Carlo Ponti, but it's played with wit by Marcello Mastroianni, the perfect choice to play a womanizing NATO major whose fear of impotence is dispelled by a need to be aroused by life threatening danger (not the classical Giacomo Casanova but a modern day equivalent). Conquest is simply too easy unless there is great risk involved, such as a dare to kiss a lion tamer in her cage with all lions present, or a prostitute so unlucky that all her customers meet tragic fates. His main squeeze is Virna Lisi, so charming and delightful that one hopes that she'll catch him in the end, but by far the most amusing femme fatale is played by Marisa Mell, as the countess whose jealous husband has a history of murdering her suitors. This takes up the bulk of the picture's second half, but with Michele Mercier ("Black Sabbath"), Beba Loncar, Margaret Lee, and many others offering prime Italian pulchritude one truly cannot complain about any lulls in the action, repetitive though they may be.

MASTROIANNI AT HIS BEST. A TOP NOTCH ITALIAN COMEDY
jbugler26 May 2001
Mastrioanni is at his best. He cannot have sex unless there is danger to his life.

Best scene is when a Sicilian family [owners of a restaurant where he is having lunch alone] drags a young girl to her bedroom and locks her up.

Her husband of one hour has exclaimed that he wants nothing to do with her because she in not pure.

Mastroianni explains to the Sicilians that he is a medical doctor and would be very happy to examine her and determine whether or not she is pure.

He goes into her room and closes the door. Two hours later he emerges all sweaty, bug-eyed and shaking.

He exclaims "she is pure." At about this time the real doctor arrives and the chase is on.

This picture is so funny.

It is as if Mastroianni is the whole Marx brothers family rolled up into one person.

I really believe Mastroianni was always at his best in comedy.

Especially sexual comedy, Italian style.

It is a shame this film is no longer available. Someone should bring it back. It is a classic.

An Utterly Pretentious Farce, But I Love It !!!
JoeKulik31 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Mario Monicelli's Casanova '70 is an utterly pretentious farce.

But this farce is executed with such an innovative storyline, and such great acting by Marcello Mastroianni, and a production that exudes style and class at every turn, that this farce is transformed in an very effective piece of cinematic storytelling, The ultimate coup de theatre in this rather convoluted, and improbable tale is the court scene, where the Major's whole amorous history is put "on trial", replete with a witness list that includes not only all of his sympathetic former love interests, but his psychiatrist too, who is all too happy to tell the court about his patient's rather peculiar, and hilarious "sexual hang up".

The cinematography is really good too, as it scans across the widely divergent settings that make this film so interesting to view.

Mastroianni, in his very effective comic portrayal shows us yet another aspect of the great breadth of his acting abilities that qualifies him as one of the all time greats.

Totally Underrated picture.
661jda17 February 2021
Marcello Mastroianni was an Italian treasure. Equally adept with comedy as well as drama. This film is a little "Divorce Italian Style" and "What's New Pussycat": at times funny, at times endearing and at all times entertaining. I'm just surprised at the low rating this has gotten. It's a hard film to find, but if you can get your hands on it, it's worth the time to watch it. The score is very listenable and the opening credits are cleaverly done. It's just a good Mastroianni comedy.

One the most underrated Italian sex comedy of all time!!
elo-equipamentos13 April 2021
Regarded as the best Italian actor for all times, Mastroianni, usually saw their contenders thru his rear-mirror in the dust, although has been a multi-faceted actor, he works out better on soft-sex comedies like this, the brilliant director Mario Monicelli co-wrote the story and screenplay as well, the outcome is fresh and beautiful designed, about the amorous adventures of OTAN's Major Andrea Rossi (Mastroianni) as mid-age unmarried man supposedly sexually impotent under normal conditions, just on extremely jeopardy he got an erection, thus he fails steadly with easy girls, fulfilled by gorgeous women this odd Casanova re-telling their affairs with countless woman with a famous psychoanalyst, who analyze him and states as sexual deviant.

However the Psychoanalyst gave to him an weird advice, he must thinking in those black silk stocking and black lingerie, then Andrea replays that he likes it on the women, which the Psychoanalyst corrects him saying that "You must wearing it like I do", suggesting Andrea forget the women and joint himself in the opposite team, the startled Andrea leaves the doctor's office soon as can, one thing is be impotent, but queer is out of question whatsoever, the grieved Andrea thereafter has many dangerous cases, making sex on the Napoleon's bed at Versailles castle meanwhile has been a touring on there, later posing as doctor to certify a girl's maidenhead, betraying his own superior on OTAN with his gorgeous wife sending previously a telegram like it was sent by herself, well in fact the troublemaker Andrea in dire straits all the time.

Magnificent Italian sex comedy without be appealing at all, utterly lustful, the stellar casting of breathtaking pretty girls, as Virna Lisi, Michèle Mercier, Marisa Mell, Liana Orfei, Beba Loncar, Moira Orfei, Margareth Lee and others hot girls, we must recognized that Marcello Mastroianni should not be paid for this job, nonetheless besides to get all those monuments girls as free he got the a lot of money, what lucky guy on hell, I didn't stop laughing on entire picture, please don't miss it for nothing!!

Thanks for reading.
