A great movie if you are recovering from a nervous breakdown...
AlsExGal14 April 2016
...which is because it is a complete farce from start to finish. In spite of the fact that the script includes a lion roaming about free in a hotel, a bit of a mad - okay more like eccentric - scientist, the alleged devouring of an older gentleman, a jailbreak, and a combined vigilante/ police man and lion hunt, there is zero stress in the entire film.

Parts of it are pure 60's "hey the production code is gone, let's go wild!" (wild for 1965, that is) stuff that really is pretty tame today as far as sexual content is concerned, including a honeymooning couple that winds up with everyone in the hotel sleeping in their room. This is the last straw for the bride who, as she leaves her new husband says "If mom and dad had started out this way I wouldn't even have been born!" There is a host of talented character actors in the background, such as Edward Andrews as the hotel proprietor, Howard Morris as a guest who thinks that the lion's roar he hears is from neglecting his cat - he even is the first to see the lion, but everyone just assumes it is drunken delusions. Then there is Jim Backus as a rather incompetent police sergeant.

The basic storyline is that Dr. Daniel Potter (Tony Randall) as a researcher at the Braden institute is running from the police who want to impound "Fluffy", a lion who Potter has trained to be as tame as a housecat. In fact, most of the trouble is caused by Potter referring to Fluffy as "his cat". He checks into a residence hotel that is completely booked, but the jet setting Janice Claridge (Shirley Jones) is going to be gone for the night and gives Potter and "his cat" her room. From there the misunderstandings and mayhem begin.

Recommended if you just want to laugh and need zero stress and conflict in your cinema entertainment for once.

Silly Film, Amazing Cast
Qanqor17 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I wish I could say that I loved this movie as wholeheartedly as others here do. I really *wanted* to love it. But no, I don't love it. Still, I do like it.

It's a really silly movie, bordering on stupid. The humor is really of a rather childish, broad sort; there's little here of cleverness or wit. As such, I got a number of chuckles out of the film, but few hearty laughs. To give you an idea, there's at least one gag in there that involves the use of fast motion (a la The Munsters).

But still, I enjoyed the film, and perhaps the biggest reason for that is the amazing cast. I stumbled onto this movie as a Tony Randall fan, and I was even more pleased when I saw that Shirley Jones costarred-- I loved her in The Music Man. But what blew me away was the supporting cast. This movie is a veritable who's who of the great character actors. We don't seem to *have* character actors anymore, but I'm a big fan of the great character actors of yesteryear, and this was the golden age of them. Character actors, for those who don't know, are those actors who were never really stars, but made a career out of playing interesting or oddball characters all over the place. Thus, they are the kind of people that you probably know the face without knowing the name. Let me list some of the ones who are in this film, with a clue or two of where you might know them from.

Dick Sargent plays the hotel front desk man. You know him as the second version of Darren on the old Bewitched show.

Edward Andrews plays the hotel manager. He was wonderful in two Twilight Zone episodes ("You Drive" and "Third From The Sun"), and played an admiral in Tora Tora Tora.

Ernest Truex plays the rich owner of the hotel, but you might know him from some fine old Twilight Zone ("Kick The Can", "What You Need") and Alfred Hitchcock Presents ("The Matched Pearl", "The Pearl Necklace") episodes.

Frank Faylen, who plays one of Earnest Truex's cold coot buddies, is better known as the father on the old Dobie Gillis show.

Jim Backus, the policeman behind the desk, costarred in the old Joan Davis Show, and did the voice of Mr. Magoo. He is best known as the millionaire on Gilligan's Island.

And Howard Morris, who plays the drunk guy, only did about a zillion cartoon voices; you'll surely recognize his voice.

And there's even the great Doodles Weaver, in a relatively tiny role (beats me why they even bothered to get him, he does so little).

So there you go. It's not a great movie, but if you don't take it too seriously, it's fun. Really, I gave it six stars for the film itself, plus an extra star for the great cast.

Oh, and the true star, the lion, really does an impressive job. I really don't know how they got that lion to be so well behaved.

Is louder funnier?

1965 studios clearly didn't have a clue, evidenced by this Universal release. Do we call the key stone cops farcical? This might be charming for nostalgia seekers but not me. On release I was in Jr high and knew this was witless and just stupily loud. 50 years later...I like animals, there is some charm...but all these characters are too stupid. Keep the FF nearby.

DVD Release???
ShirleyValentine26 March 2006
Fluffy is a great family movie. I remember watching Fluffy for the first time on a 10 inch B&W TV that my parents gave me for Christmas when I was 10. Why isn't this movie being released on DVD? I haven't seen Fluffy even on TV for years. Fluffy is a great comedy and should be available for viewing. Tony Randall is hilarious and since his death almost all of his earlier movies have been released on DVD in sets but not Fluffy! I have searched every internet website in search of this movie on VHS or DVD and as far as I can tell it has never been released. I am sure that even today's generation would find this movie funny and enjoy every minute. Having a Lion running loose in hotel sets the stage for various humorous moments. PLEASE RELEASE THIS MOVIE ON DVD!

Actually, I thought it was kind of stupid....sorry folks.

I love Tony Randall movies and so after I finished watching another one of his delightful films (THE BRASS BOTTLE), I decided to give FLUFFY a try. After all, I liked him in so many films and this one looked pretty cute...so I was bound to like it, right. No...no...no! In fact, I disliked it so much I couldn't even finish it.

The story is about a very eccentric man, Professor Potter (Randall)...too eccentric to be believable in any way. The story begins with security guards at the university breaking into Potter's lab and trying to confiscate his lion, named 'Fluffy'. They don't realize that Fluffy is very tame and sweet and they don't give Potter any time to explain. So, Potter is forced to use their dart guns on them and make his escape with Fluffy. He then checks in with his pet to a rooming house--all the while they don't realize the pet is a lion. And again and again, folks ALMOST see Fluffy when it escapes and walks about doing nothing in particular. And, Potter seems a bit oblivious to the fact that a lion running about town might cause a few problems.

The problem with the film is that they didn't make Potter so much eccentric as a complete idiot. Again and again, he could explain things simply but doesn't and every problem that arises seems completely contrived. Rises, at its best, to the level of a sub-par 1960s Disney film but never better. Tons of broad humor, overreactions and stupid special effects (such as phone in champagne basket and short- circuiting switchboard). Just dumb.

Awful, pointless drivel concerning a docile lion let loose in a hotel. Fluffy the lion seems downright bored; he never roars, but rather understandably yawns. Dstributed by Universal on a double bill with That Funny Feeling, Fluffy is a waste of time guaranteed to bore the entire family. Both the title character and the film are devoid of personality, interest and charm. With a cast made up of familiar faces from television it feels like a pilot for a failed sitcom. The favorable user reviews are examples of nostalgia not critical judgment. Fluffy is inferior to other mid 60s family films such as Island of the Blue Dolphins (1964), A High Wind in Jamaica (1964), The Incredible Mr. Limpet(1964), A Boy Ten Feet Tall (1963) and The Ghost and Mr. Chicken(1965) for they were reasonably entertaining, had some semblance of a plot and were tolerable for adults as well. Fluffy was clearly made cheaply and quickly.

Wonderful Movie
kconrad-523 June 2006
One of my most fondest memories growing up. My dad and I would watch it every time it came on the television and it is one of my favorites and always has been. It is clean, funny, and just a great cast and the lion is priceless. It would be wonderful if it would be released on DVD. I have been looking for this movie on the internet for years now and have come to realize I am not going to find it. If anyone has not seen it well, it is a must see movie. It is fun and heart filled and something you can watch with the whole family. They just don't make movies like they used to. I am hoping one day to have the experience of watching it with my daughter as well. Never has a movie held so much meaning to me and even more so since I lost my day and I would love to be able to watch it once again with my mom and daughter. It is a great movie, must see, two thumbs way up.

"I see she's a spelunker." .. "Yeah, she has been acting a little bit peculiar lately."
moonspinner556 September 2017
Tony Randall plays a professor of comparative psychology who is chased out of his animal lab by the cops, who are responding to complaints by the neighbors that he's harboring a wild beast. It's only Fluffy, a tame and very sleepy lion, who checks in with Randall at an apartment-hotel under the nose of manager Edward Andrews (Randall orders 35 hamburgers and a vat of Pablum from room service, sending the Asian staff into a tizzy). A brunette Shirley Jones plays the begrudging love-interest, who initially believes police reports that Randall is psychotic (he's so incredibly guileless about how other people feel about an uncaged lion walking around that the cops may have a point). Gitchy-goo comedy for family audiences; utterly underwhelming and unrewarding. Jim Backus is wasted as a desk sergeant; Adam Roarke (later of the juvenile delinquent wheelers of the late-'60s) has a clean-cut role here as a newlywed. *1/2 from ****

Silly, Funny and Charming Fun
aesgaard411 March 2001
To many fans, Tony Randall will only and always be Felix Unger, but in this movie he plays Professor Daniel Potter who much to the concern of everyone around him does experiments with his pet lion, Fluffy. Filled with many of those recognizable faces from the Seventies, such as Edward Andrews, Howard Morris, Jim Backus and Dick Sargent, the movie's most enduring star is the lion who upon sight of him sends many a person irrationally running for their lives. Randall is a hoot as he stands by the lion indifferent to the events and saying, "He's harmless I tell you. Harmless." Shirley Jones is on hand as Randall's lady love unsure of his feelings as she races by his side as Fluffy runs loose and unattended in a hotel freaking out everyone who sees him. "He's harmless. Wouldn't harm a fly !" insists Randall. There is a nonsensical and silly aspect to this movie, but it's charming aspect comes from Fluffy's innocent to the hysteria he unknowingly causes and the confusion that Randall knows he's creating. You have to see it for the man who rides the lion's back.

Very funny...
nvserv8 August 2005
This movie was always a guilty pleasure for me. Whenever I saw it would be on, I finagled a way to be able to watch. Being a cat-lover, I loved the lion. Even now, I find myself smiling, just thinking about the film.

The cast was perfect in their over-reactions and bluster when confronted by the lion and Tony Randall's insistence that Fluffy would hurt no one. It's classic comedy for its time, and the humor still works, all these years later.

I highly recommend this film for harmless fun that's enjoyable for adults and children.

Tony Randall and his pet lion named fluffy
marycatherinebaker25 October 2007
This is one of my all time favourite movies. I wish it was out on DVD. Years ago it was on TV and I taped it so every now and then I get it out and watch it. It may not be as clear as a DVD would be but I still love to watch it. Tony Randall and Shirley Jones are great in this movie. I would love to see it out on DVD and wouldn't hesitate to buy it regardless of cost. It's a great family movie and comedy. A lot of the movies made today are just plain garbage but not this one. I love the movies of this era as they are just good clean fun without the violence and gore that is so common today. Please, whoever made the movie Fluffy, please release it on DVD ASAP for all us fans out here who would love to own it for ourselves.

Loved this movie then and now.
cute_one229 October 2009
One of my favorite movies of all time I know if is a little corny but who doesn't love a little core every once in a while as a kid things are supposed to be corny as an adult it is fun to remember childhood joys. If you have never seen this movie take the time to watch it especially if you have kids let them watch it with you and then watch them. If they love it as much as I did you are in for a treat. Old movies can be so fun and enjoyable. You also can avoid the as my mother would say the garbage that you find in a lot of the movies today if you are looking for a good whole some movie this is one to watch. I only wish I knew where to find it now.

Absolutely Hilarious!
loza-124 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this on the big screen when I was a kid. This was the B movie. I can't remember what the A movie was. I absolutely loved this one. A month later, I had a school essay, where I had to write about a film I had seen. I chose this one. And began to encounter problems...

I would tell you what the plot is...but I can't. Tony Randall is a "Professor of Comparative Psychology". The institution where he works is raided by the police, who are investigating complaints about a lion he uses for his research. The lion is tame and gentle. The professor knows that. We know that. But nobody else does....After a fight with police, the professor and his lion flees, and they take refuge in an hotel that has apartments rather than rooms. After that, it is easy to lose the plot, because you are too busy laughing.

The main comedy device I noticed in this film is that if a character says or does something, or if something happens, other characters will misunderstand it. Of course this is not the first film to use this device. But I have never seen it used so often or with such intensity. Does it work in this film? Well, if I am creased up from start to finish, then it obviously does.

Tony Randall is a comedy actor who can be good in one film, and bad in another, depending on the script. This is one of his better performances, as he struggles to protect his lion from armed police and armed vigilantes. Of the rest of the cast, I would like to single out Edward Andrews as the hotel manager. The laughter is also at its loudest when the man who plays the dipsomaniac is on the screen.

And the hysteria can be realistic. In the UK some years ago a man thought he had seen a lion. He reported it to the police. And out of the woodwork came the armed police, armed volunteers, heat-seeking helicopters. Everything. And the round-the-clock search began. One of the helicopters spotted an infra-red image, but it was probably a badger. The lion was never found. So the film might exaggerate the reaction of the public and the authorities; but it is more or less accurate.

With this film, analysis can only get you so far. The best thing to do is to just watch the film. Watch it with the rest of the family. I've watched it as a child and as an adult. As an adult, I laughed all the harder.
