Not as popular as the Jetsons, but still a fun Hanna-Barbera toon.

"The Space Kidettes: Scooter, Jenny, Countdown, Snoopy and Pupstar. And starring me, the evil Captain Skyhook and his evil pal Static!"

That's how the show opened, as the Captain himself did the opening announcement. While the Space Kidettes may not be as popular the Flintstones or say the Jetsons, it is still remembered fondly, though some may not recall the show's title name. While Space Ghost, the Herculoids and Samson & Goliath focused more on derring-do action, the Space Kidettes had a kiddie-fun quality to it. There was something for everybody - The "kids outwitting the dim-witted adults slapstick" and the slightly savvy dialogue between Captain Skyhook and Static, who really were the stars of the show. Static would always suggest some type of violent torture to get the kids to cough up their treasure map, to which the Captain would bonk him on the head and tell him "You can't do that, they're just LITTLE KIDS!"

Overall, it was a neat '60s cartoon series and like the Jetsons, it pulled you into it's space-themed environment.

It's An Outer Space Chase.

Among the less-renowned Hanna-Barbera toons I hadn't heard of nor grew up on watching, I first came across this show while looking at that studio's filmography and stills of scenes from this series. The storyline behind it appealed to me and made me curious enough to want to see the show online. I'm glad I made that choice, as it became one of my favorite T.V. cartoons from the 1960s, favorites by H-B, and favorites in general. I consider this to be one of the most exciting and entertaining programs ever made.

Due to the other reviewers prior to me already explaining what it's all about, I don't think I can state much that hasn't already been stated. But I'll try to explain differently while I keep mine shorter and try to add a few, other things of note to it. A quadruple crew of youngsters and their canine: Countdown, Scooter, Jenny, Snoopy, and Pupstar travel around the galaxy, from planet to planet, all while being pursued by the space pirate duo, Captain Skyhook and his underling/sidekick, Static. They're constantly after the kids' treasure map and their goal is to steal it from them; the kids' goal is to keep it within their possession. That's the basis, but both groups also meet other characters along the way.

What I have to add to this are the technicalities of it. The art is stylized, but the animation isn't limited like several, other animated works have been and with which they've been associated, including certain, other, H-B shows from the '60s. It's actually one of the rare T.V. toons from that decade that has full animation (which I wish was more common), so it turns out the T.V. animated series of that time having nothing but limited animated isn't entirely true, there were actually higher quality T.V. cartoons prior to the mid 1980s. As for the characters, some may say that the Space Kidettes have the same personality, at least seemingly, at first glance, but I beg to differ. They're really more distinctive from one another than one may think. The chemistry between the protagonists and antagonists allows it to play off of each side well enough. The writing I'm sure is much better than that of the Biskitts and the Monchichi's (even though I only saw clips of the former and read about both of them). Although I recognize some of the voice cast, they all sounded like they did a fine enough job bringing out their roles. The music is nice too, nothing to complain about there.

I read that each of the episodes was supposedly, approximately a half-hour long rather than ten minutes long and that after their original airings, some scenes from every one of those got lost over time. But from all that I watched so far, I can't tell at what points it seems there are any scenes missing. So, I'm not so sure just how true that is. Anyway, I consider it to be one of the better materials in that company's oeuvre. I say it's plenty worthy of a look. I have no regrets about it. Recommended.

"They're Just Little Kids!"

Warning: Spoilers
The title of this essay is the lament of a space pirate named Captain Skyhook on why he can't do anything really mean to get the best of four kids - Scooter, Jenny, Countdown, and Snoopy - and their dog Pupstar, all known collectively as THE SPACE KIDETTES.

When Hanna-Barbera Productions was launching their action-adventure/superhero cycle with SPACE GHOST in 1966, they were trying to make the transition from the humor-oriented series that made the studio's name to a more action-oriented style. there were two series that year that allowed them to make that transition. One was FRANKENSTEIN JR. AND THE IMPOSSIBLES on CBS and the other was THE SPACE KIDETTES on NBC.

For the record, the title characters were an Our Gang styled group of kids that consisted of Scooter (Chris Allen), the leader; Jenny (Janet Waldo), the token girl; Countdown (Don Messick), the brainy kid; and Snoopy (Lucille Bliss), the youngest of the bunch. Together with their dog Pupstar, they travel around space having many adventures.

But knowing that a show concerning four tykes would get boring exceedingly fast, the writers gave them a treasure map which gave motivation for a pair of space pirates named Captain Skyhook (Daws Butler) and Static (Don Messick) to go after them and try to steal their map. The only thing that keeps Captain Skyhook from doing anything really mean to the Kidettes is the fact they are just that, a bunch of little kids. Something he keeps reminding his partner Static whenever he gets the idea to do something mean to them(often with a well placed bonk on the head).

Besides having to deal with those two pirates, the Space Kidettes found themselves having to deal with such baddies as a mole-man creature, a laser breathing dragon, a wicked witch, and various other baddies. All in the space of 20 cartoons, each ten minutes in length.

Although THE SPACE KIDETTES was not as notable as Hanna-Barbera's other superhero series during the 1960's, it did manage to last two years on NBC until 1968. In the 1967-1968 season, THE SPACE KIDETTES was teamed one of Hanna-Barbera's more serious superhero series, YOUNG SAMSON & GOLIATH. And it is this teaming that both series are currently shown under in syndication and on DVD from Warner Home Video as part their Hanna-Barbera's Golden Classics series of DVDs.
