Recorded in a real castle with the cast and crew staying in a motel nearby. Apparently the main stars were such jovial hosts and raconteurs at this small motel that much of the recording was done after sleepless,hung over nights for all concerned.
Blue Pear Records released a bootleg soundtrack on vinyl. Titled "Four Television Musicals," it also included the songs from A Bell for Adano (1956), No Man Can Tame Me (1959) and Junior Miss (1957).
Picking up on cues in the original Oscar Wilde novel, writer Burt Shevelove suggested that songwriting duo Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick should compose commercial jingles for several off-the-wall moments in the show when the characters break the fourth wall. The result, "Undertow," "Rattletrap" and "Overhead," all boast the same melody but feature different musical styles.
Songwriters Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick had little direct involvement with the production, as they were simultaneously working on "The Apple Tree," a musical which opened on Broadway two weeks before this special aired.
