It's odd to think that there was a time when Clint Eastwood was just a jobbing actor and not the Hollywood legend we know him to be. As an actor and a director, the man has had a career that anyone looking for success in the film industry would envy, being able to make whatever he wanted to make consistently for decades.
Though he's tackled crime stories, romantic melodramas, biopics, and just about everything else you could in the business, we all know Clint Eastwood's bread and butter is the Western, the genre that rocketed him to stardom in the 1960s with the release of Sergio Leone's classic Spaghetti Western "Dollars" trilogy, all three of which hit American movie screens in 1967.

My Chemical Romance formed on September 12, 2001. The date was no accident: They’ve long credited their formation to the events that happened on 9/11. Singer Gerard Way was working at Cartoon Network in New York City and experienced the aftermath firsthand, inspiring him to create something that could change the world for the better.
Twenty-one years later on Sunday night, My Chemical Romance took the stage at Barclays Center. Fans have been anticipating this reunion: After a 12-year run, they had split in 2013 to pursue other projects. Then, in 2017, they came together privately,...

On paper, Clint Eastwood seems to have enjoyed a well plotted out career. In the early 1960s, he made himself known to American television viewers via his role as Rowdy Yates on "Rawhide." From there, he segued to the newfangled Spaghetti Westerns of Sergio Leone as the laconic "Man with No Name" in the "Dollars Trilogy." As conventional Westerns faded out of fashion, Eastwood made violent, anti-mythic oaters like "Hang 'Em High" and "The Outlaw Josey Wales," while adopting the persona of Dirty Harry Callahan in a series of cop flicks that both capitalized on and tweaked the country's law-and-order fervor. Then, after a few stumbles in the late 1980s, Eastwood went full-on revisionist with "Unforgiven," at which point he became a perennial Oscar darling.
Amazingly, Eastwood is still plugging away at 92. That kind of career longevity isn't just rare, it's just about unprecedented. Only Portuguese filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira,...

1971 was hands-down the most important year of Clint Eastwood's career. Having solidified his movie star status via Sergio Leone's "Dollars Trilogy", Eastwood was spinning his wheels a bit as he segued into the next chapter of his career. He'd enjoyed huge commercial successes in the late-1960s with "Hang 'Em High" and "Where Eagles Dare" and even the misbegotten musical "Paint Your Wagon," but these films all felt like more of the same. Eastwood could tread water for a few more...

Arlene Golonka, best known for her portrayal of waitress Millie on the classic CBS sitcom The Andy Griffith Show and its spinoff Mayberry R.F.D., died Monday at a West Hollywood memory care facility following a battle with Alzheimer’s. She was 85.
Her death was announced by her friend, the literary agent Cary Kozlov.

The Son season 2 opens with a couple of close shaves in "Numunuu."
This The Son review contains spoilers.
The Son Season 2 Episode 1
The Son episode 1, " Numunuu," establishes season 2 immediately. The setting is a Mexican chain gang roadside dig where one gringo stands out. He doesn't look particularly special, but the vehicle that comes to pick him out of the line looks very important. The first we see of Eli McCullough (Pierce Brosnan) is the boots. His spurs may not be jingle jangle jingling, but the First Son of Texas rides merrily along. He bribes a federale and retains his son, Pete (Henry Garrett). It is a muted reunion, given the circumstances.
Pete's got a lot to hide. He abandoned his family to run off across the border with María García (Paola Núñez) after his family slaughtered hers in an old fashion Texas land grab. He took off his ring and...

Check out this unearthed 1977 letter from Clint Eastwood to film critic Andrew Sarris, wherein Eastwood thanks Sarris for his Village Voice article on the "Dirty Harry" franchise, titled "Is Harry Too Dirty?" Eastwood gets to expound on the perceived messages in his films, complaining that ones with anti-capital punishment agendas like "Hang 'Em High" got little media attention, while vigilante crime classic "Dirty Harry" and its sequels -- which are about, in his words, "concern for the victim" -- results in Pauline Kael calling "fascism." By February of '77, three of the five Dirty Harry films would have come out -- 1971's "Dirty Harry," 1973's "Magnum Force" and 1976's "The Enforcer."...

Influential figure in Clint Eastwood's career who directed Magnum Force and Hang 'em High
It is no exaggeration to declare that the film and television director Ted Post, who has died aged 95, contributed greatly to the making of Clint Eastwood into a Hollywood superstar. When Eastwood returned to the Us from Europe, where he had starred in three Sergio Leone "spaghetti" westerns, Post directed him in Hang 'em High (1968), which consolidated Eastwood's screen persona as the impassive, laconic, gun-for-hire loner. A few years later, Post directed Eastwood again, in Magnum Force (1973), the first Dirty Harry sequel, which outdid Don Siegel's original film commercially. Eastwood said that Leone, Siegel and Post were the three most influential directors in his career.
In 1959, the unknown Eastwood – who had appeared in bit parts in 11 films – moved to CBS for his first leading role, as the amiable fresh-faced sidekick Rowdy Yates, in the television western series Rawhide.

Prolific TV and film director Ted Post has died at the age of 95.
Although Post had his hand in a number of genres, he's perhaps most famous for his work on Westerns like "The Peacemaker," "Hang 'Em High" and "Rawhide" with Clint Eastwood, "Gunsmoke," and "Stagecoach." He also directed Eastwood (pictured above on set) in the "Dirty Harry" sequel "Magnum Force." Eastwood and Post didn't collaborate after that due to various disagreements.
Post also helmed the sequel "Beneath the Planet of the Apes," the pilot for "Cagney and Lacey," and more than a few episodes of "Peyton Place." Some of his more outré offerings include freaky horror exploitation flick "The Baby," "The Harrad Experiment" about swingin' sexual experimentation, and the Chuck Norris actioner "Good Guys Wear Black."
Post's legacy includes Pro Bono Productions, the nonprofit he started in 1996 to elevate the profiles of older actors in show business. "Our industry...

Go Ahead, Make My Day! week continues at Trailers from Hell, with TV writer Alan Spencer introducing "Magnum Force," the second of the Dirty Harry movies, starring Clint Eastwood. The title "Magnum Force" reflects the contributions of screenwriter and firearms fan John Milius, who was rewritten by a pre-Deer Hunter Michael Cimino. Director Ted Post, who had worked with Eastwood on Hang 'em High and tv's Rawhide, found the star more contentious at this stage of his career and claimed their disputes during production harmed the film. But boxoffice results topped the original.

"The hanging was the best show in town."
Though considered classics today, Clint Eastwood's early spaghetti westerns were initially panned by critics who complained about the movies' "dopey" plots and Eastwood's "wooden" acting. It wasn't until Eastwood returned to America to star in Hang 'em High that he started to receive any recognition for his portrayal of dusty anti-heroes. Co-produced with United Artists (UA) by Eastwood's newly-established production company, Malpaso Productions , and shot on location in New Mexico, Hang 'em High received overwhelmingly favorable reviews and had the largest opening at the box office of any previous UA movie.
Hang 'em High finds Eastwood playing Jed Cooper, an innocent man who survives being lynched by a posse convinced that he is a murderer and cattle rustler. After being found innocent by regional judge Adam Fenton (Pat Hingle) — loosely based on real-life "Hanging Judge" Isaac Parker — Cooper accepts Fenton's offer to become a marshal.

It may be Sunday, but you know the saying - There's no rest for the wicked. Which must be why Rob Zombie chose today to announce some of the biggest casting news yet for his upcoming Lords of Salem. Read on for the details.
Here's what Zombie had to say about Dern on, where else?, his Facebook page:
Here's some really exciting casting news! I am fucking thrilled to announce that Academy Award nominated actor Bruce Dern has joined the ever growing cast of The Lords Of Salem. Bruce is taking on the role of Francis Matthias author of the book "Satan's Last Stand - The Truth About The Salem Witch Trials." Francis may know a little too much about witches for his own good.

In Sunrise, Wyoming on March 5, 1861, standard spaghetti western music plays on a dusty deserted street. Two cowboys with spurs that jingle-jangle standoff while nervous townspeople appear through windows. Apparently 3 people live in Sunrise. The cowboys dramatically draw back their coats in tandem and we flash onto a Sheriff badge. Well howdy Sheriff Dean. He looks intensely as a clock nears noon. Yep, it's an old-fashioned showdown. Guns are drawn but we fade to a map of old Wyoming. Bwah! It's a Bonanza-style title card. As flames burn the middle, a flaming yellow "Supernatural" appears, before the discordant sound of the usual glass breaking. They always get the title sequence for "very special" episodes dead right.

Who is Dennis Hopper? R.I.P. Dennis Hopper -- Lost in 2010 to Prostate Cancer... [Jan. 31] Actor Dennis Hopper was honored in a film montage at the 2011 SAG Awards January 30, 2011. Younger fans remember Dennis Hopper the most for his work as the mad bomber retired from the police force in the movie Speed. He co-starred with Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves. His trademark was playing the bad guy -- and in Speed, Hopper played one of the most memorable villains of them all. However, he was also well known and will be long remembered for his roles in blockbuster Hollywood movies like Easy Rider, Blue Velvet, Waterworld and Hoosiers -- all of which earned him a variety of awards nominations. Other film credits included the original movie version of the John Wayne Western film classic True Grit (currently revisited as a movie remake with actors Matt Damon and Jeff Bridges), Rebel Without A Cause...

James MacArthur, best known to American television audiences as "Danno" in the classic TV series "Hawaii Five-O," died of natural causes today in Florida. He was 72 years old.
As youthful Detective Danny "Danno" Williams, MacArthur became as recognizable as Jack Lord, who played the team's leader Steve McGarrett. However, it was Lord who uttered what would become the series' signature catchphrase: "Book 'em, Danno." The original "Hawaii Five-O" aired from 1968 until 1980; CBS recently premiered a modern reboot of the crime drama with Scott Caan playing Danny Williams. MacArthur, the last living member from the original series main cast, had agreed to appear in an upcoming episode, according to a statement on his personal website.
Born James Gordon MacArthur on December 8, 1937, in Los Angeles, California, MacArthur is the adopted son of playwright Charles MacArthur and his wife Helen Hayes, who was considered to be the First Lady of the American stage. He grew up in Nyack, New York, with his parents' biological daughter Mary, and was educated at Allen Stevenson School in New York, and later at Solebury School in New Hope, Pennsylvania. MacArthur would later attend Harvard but, after working in several Walt Disney films over his summer breaks, left to pursue an acting career full-time.
MacArthur also won acclaim onstage, making his Broadway debut in 1960 playing opposite Jane Fonda in "Invitation to a March." But his clean-cut looks and athletic build won him roles in the late 1950s and 60s in several Disney films, including The Light in the Forest, Third Man on the Mountain, and the classics Kidnapped and Swiss Family Robinson. He also played a pivotal role in the 1965 film classic Battle of the Bulge. During that period MacArthur also guest starred on a number of television series including "Gunsmoke," "Bonanza," "Wagon Train," "The Untouchables" and "12 O'Clock High." He even co-starred with Hayes in a 1968 episode of "Tarzan."
Reportedly it was his appearance in the legendary Clint Eastwood Western Hang 'Em High that would eventually lead to MacArthur winning the role on "Hawaii Five-O."
After "Hawaii Five-O" came to an end, MacArthur returned to the stage, making guest appearances on series such as "Fantasy Island," "The Love Boat," "Vega$,"and "Murder, She Wrote." He also reprised the role of Dan Williams in a 1997 attempt to resurrect "Hawaii Five-O" but the pilot, in which Williams had been made Hawaii's Governor, was never picked up. His final small-screen appearance was in the 1998 TV movie "Storm Chasers: Revenge of the Twister."
According to a family statement reported by People.com, MacArthur spent his time off-camera enjoying sports and played flamenco guitar. He was formerly married to actress Joyce Bulifant from 1958 to 1967, and to actress Melody Patterson from 1970 to 1975. Both unions ended in divorce.
MacArthur is survived by his wife, Helen Beth Duntz, four children and seven grandchildren.

For more than a decade, Bungie has been making "Halo" games. The franchise started out as an exciting Mac release and has since evolved into something much, much larger. But Bungie's time with the Spartans and Covenant comes to a close with the release of "Halo: Reach," as they'll be moving on to a brand new, decade-spanning, multi-platform franchise. The question remains, did they have enough left in the "Halo" tank to end on a bang, or is "Halo: Reach" more of a wet fizzle?
The Basics
The events of the "Halo: Reach" campaign take place immediately before the very first "Halo" game. The planet of Reach, a human military stronghold and research hub, is attacked by the Covenant, and will eventually fall. This downfall is revealed the instant the game begins, but a quick flashback jumps you to just before things start to go south. You know the ending,...

For the most part, this week's DVD releases consist of a handful of forgotten releases from the beginning of the year including Daybreakers, Edge of Darkness and Legion... it's open to debate whether or not they were overlooked or just plain bad. There's also a dose of late '90s nostalgia in the form of Daria: The Complete Animated Series, and some '80s memories as well with both The Karate Kid and The Karate Kid Part II out on Blu-ray. Other Blu-ray releases include the Criterion Collection for Fritz Lang's M, and a trio of Mel Brooks flicks. Do you see anything worth buying or renting this week? One of the excellent upgrades over the previous DVD edition is the inclusion of the long-lost English-language version and if I am not mistaken in putting the timeline together, it would seem it was shortly found after Criterion released the DVD edition back in 2004. I actually did not own that edition, all I owned was the Art House Essential edition from Criterion that was just the movie alone. This new Blu-ray obviously tops that and taking the picture and audio into account this new Blu-ray takes things even further than the original DVD release. For my money, the following speech and...

The actor and director is entering his ninth decade, What accounts for his astonishing professional longevity?
Gallery: 80 years of Clint in 80 pictures
Directors may occasionally be shown respect, perhaps even asked for their autograph, in America, but no one actually likes them. People may admire or envy James Cameron or Steven Spielberg or Francis Ford Coppola or Martin Scorsese, and a significantly smaller group of filmgoers may look forward to Woody Allen's next outing, but they don't have much of an emotional connection with them. This is what makes Clint Eastwood's career so singular.
Because he started out as an actor, and very quickly became an actor that a large segment of the population positively adored, in the same way that they adored Jimmy Cagney and Cary Grant and both Hepburns, Eastwood has long benefited from a personal relationship with the American people that no other living director can even dream of.

After nominating For a Few Dollars More and The Good the Bad and the Ugly for Free Flick of the Day, I'm going to sound like a very old and tired drum by nominating Hang 'Em High. But hey, you need something to watch today and it's just sitting there, waiting for someone to notice it.
Hang 'Em High isn't a great film by any means, and it's not a very remarkable Western. It's full of missed opportunities, and the end hints that there may have been plans for a franchise centered around Marshall Jed Cooper. It's notable because it was the first film Clint Eastwood produced with his Malpaso shingle, which he would obviously go onto do great things with. (Would there be an Unforgiven without Hang 'Em High? Probably, but who knows!) It's also his first post-Sergio Leone Western, and one of the first attempts to bring Leone's style to America.

In addition to appearing in hundreds of movies, plays and TV series, Joe is also the toast of the town in New York City, due to his exclusive annual party to celebrate the blooming of his rose garden in his penthouse garden just off Central Park. Joe's been throwing these parties for decades, and in doing some research on an article, I came across a New York Daily News society column from 1967 that touted the party as the social event of the month! Actor Pat Hingle, who had a long and distinguished career in stage, TV and film, has died at his North Carolina home at age 84 after a battle with blood cancer. Hingle's first feature film was an uncredited bit role in On the Waterfront. However, he soon became one of the most in-demand character actors. Despite looking like the neighbor next door (and bearing a resemblance to Andy Devine), Hingle had a commanding screen presence and very often was cast as a judge or government official. Hingle had landed the title role in Richard Brooks' classic 1960 screen adaptation of Elmer Gantry but he suffered a nearly fatal fall down an elevator shaft. While he was recovering, Burt Lancaster took over the part and won an Oscar for his efforts. Nevertheless, Hingle appeared in many high profile films and worked three times with Clint Eastwood: on Hang 'Em High, The Gauntlet and Sudden Impact.
