George Segal with Ben Gazzara and Robert Vaughn during the filming of "The Bridge at Remagen" in 1968.
By Lee Pfeiffer
Actor George Segal has passed away at age 87. Segal became a rising young star in the 1960s and went on to enjoy success in both feature films and television. He made his big screen debut in "The Young Doctors" in 1961 and within a few years had appeared in "Ship of Fools" and his first starring role in "King Rat". The 1965 adaptation of James Clavell's novel found Segal as an American prisoner in a Japanese P.O.W. camp in WWII. He uses his guile and survival skills to not only stay alive but to thrive, much to disgust of British P.O.W.s who think his actions border on collaboration with the enemy. Segal's biggest break came the following year when he was cast in Mike Nichols' screen...

Al Adamson: The Masterpiece Collection
Blu ray
Severin Films
1965 – 1989 / 2841 min.
Starring Russ Tamblyn, Regina Carrol, Lon Chaney
Cinematography by Gary Graver, Vilmos Zsigmond, László Kovács
Directed by Al Adamson, David Gregory
The titles grab you by the collar like a desperate carny barker – Psycho A Go-Go, Blood of Ghastly Horror, Satan’s Sadists – then something for the raincoat crowd – Girls For Rent, Nurses For Sale, The Naughty Stewardesses. The rant turns political, incendiary: Black Heat, Mean Mother, Black Samurai. His last gasp – Cinderella 2000, Nurse Sherri, The Happy Hobo. The Happy Hobo?
Al Adamson: The Masterpiece Collection is an alarming new release from Severin Films presenting 32 of the director’s misbegotten “masterpieces” in beautifully restored transfers with enough added attractions to choke a horse. It’s the story of one man’s twenty year run in exploitation cinema that may be too exhausting for the casual viewer to contemplate. But...

Don’t call them Bad Movies — when something’s this enjoyable, other verbal put-downs are more appropriate. This low-grade German sexploitation horror pic spent its full budget on its roster of frisky Berlin showgirls. After years of study, experts have finally proven that it was filmed with a camera. Severin’s special edition does justice to a cult non-classic with an uncut original German version, plus a second American version and extra alternate scenes. Alexander D’Arcy’s scary horror-face is a childhood monster magazine memory. The creepy title critter looks like a land crab morphed with a really pissed-off Woody Woodpecker.

Capone is the last movie you’d ever brand as a “traditional gangster pic.” While the infamous mobster’s seven-year reign of terror as head of the Chicago rackets in the 1920s has been chronicled in movies like The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre (1967) and The Untouchables (1987), the final stages of Capone’s life — addled by dementia and neurosyphilis at his Palm Island, Florida estate after his release from prison — have been explored less than his earlier, more colorful exploits.
Enter Josh Trank. After bursting onto the Hollywood radar in 2012 with his found-footage deconstruction of superhero and comic book tropes, Chronicle, Trank was heavily courted for various projects and ended up directing 20th Century Fox’s 2015 reboot of Fantastic Four, which was sabotaged — and ultimately sunk with both audiences and critics — by studio interference, bad press surrounding the production and Trank’s alleged on-set behavior, as well as the filmmaker’s...

Notorious mobster Al Capone was a larger than life bootlegger, racketeer, killer and organized crime boss in the first half of the 20th century, who has been portrayed on big-screen and small for seven decades. Here is a look at the actors who took on the challenge. And, if you’re curious, here is archival footage of Scarface himself.
Rod Steiger – “Al Capone” (1959) • Rod Steiger played Capone with deliberate showiness, from the roar of his voice to the tilt of hid fedora. Although he won a Laurel Award for his performance, Capone’s sister wasn’t crazy about the film – she sued the filmmakers for $10 million for invasion of privacy because they failed to get permission from the Capone estate to make it. The suit was eventually dismissed. Check out Steiger as Capone in a clip here.

What's Jack Nicholson's secret? Maybe it's the eyebrows, hovering like ironic quotation marks over every line reading. Maybe it's the hooded eyes, which hold the threat of danger or the promise of joviality -- you're never sure which. Same with that sharklike grin. Or maybe it's the voice, which has evolved over the years from a thin sneer to a deep rumble, but is always precisely calibrated to provoke a reaction. Put them all together, and they say: "I am a man to be reckoned with. Ignore me at your peril." Nicholson, who turns 75 on April 22, is often criticized for relying on his bag of tricks, for just showing up and doing Jack Nicholson (though indeed, he often seems to have been hired precisely for that purpose). But he's also capable of burrowing deep into a character, finding his wounded heart, and revealing the ugly truth without fear or vanity.

Thanks to new interest in prohibition-era 'gangsters', spurred on by Martin Scorsese's upcoming HBO series "Boardwalk Empire", Warners has acquired the screenplay "Cicero", based on the rise of 'Scarface Al Capone', the ruthless, Chicago-based, organized crime racketeer.
The "Cicero" screenplay is by Walon Green, noted for writing director 'Bloody Sam' Peckinpah's classic western "The Wild Bunch".
Actor James Gandolfini, at age 49, although maybe considered 'too old' for the part, is still the top commercial/critical choice to play Capone.
Gandolfini has been looking for the right feature to showcase his considerable charm and acting skills, following his 3-time Emmy, television turn as 'Tony Soprano' on HBO's "The Sopranos".

Kurt Kreuger, a Swiss-German actor often cast as a Nazi officer in World War II movies and who later became a realtor, has died. He was 89. Kreuger died on July 12 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after a stroke, according to his friend Lynne Riehman. The actor was born in Michenberg, Germany and was raised in Switzerland. In the 1950s, he appeared in more than 20 films, including Mademoiselle Fifi, his first major role. Kreuger's good looks made him 20th Century Fox's third most-requested male pin-up photo. Although he tried to break free from his stereotyped image, Kreuger was frustrated by the studio, who refused to cast him in different types of roles. He moved to Europe in the 1950s where he appeared in German films. His last film was The St. Valentine's Day Massacre, released in 1967. After acting on television through the 1960s, Kreuger became a successful realtor in Beverly Hills, California.
