Plot Summary

A liberated young schoolteacher at an Edinburgh girls' school in the period between the two world wars, instructs her girls on the ways of life. Ignoring the more mundane subjects, she teaches them of love, politics and art. Her affairs with two male teachers become known and she finds herself fighting to keep her job. She believes that she can always count on the one hundred percent support of her favorite pupils, but one of them does not feel that Miss Jean Brodie (Dame Maggie Smith) is in her "prime" anymore. No longer swayed by her teacher's eloquence, she begins to learn about life and love herself. Written by Rhino

Trivia The school desks had to be raised so that some of the girls wouldn't look as grown-up as they really were. In fact, one of the girls was a 21-year-old mother. See more »
Goofs Miss Brodie presents a slide show to the class. She tells a tale of how Dante Alighieri fell in love with Beatrice Portinari when they met at the old bridge (Ponte Vecchio) in Florence. Miss Brodie changes some of the facts of the Dante and Beatrice story, but in doing so she is relating the story (consciously or unconsciously) of her own failed romance with an older man. See more »

Quotes [Miss Brodie is getting the new girls to introduce themselves]
Jean Brodie: Would you like to tell us something about yourself, Emily.
Emily Carstairs: [eagerly] I'm a Girl Guide, Miss Brodie. I have six merit badges: one for knot-tying, one for flag-folding...
Jean Brodie: [cutting off Emily's list] For those who like that sort of thing, that is the sort of thing they like.
