To call Elvis Costello an artistic chameleon is almost too easy. He’s more akin to a Cheshire Cat, appearing and disappearing across the pop music spectrum at will, identifiable only by the sly grin that permeates his work. The breadth of his collaborations are limited only by his own imagination and good taste; over the last two decades he’s played with everyone from the Roots to the Brodsky Quartet, Allen Toussaint to Chet Baker, Marcus Mumford, Roy Orbison, Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach and — most famously — his crack backing band, the Imposters. So, it makes total sense that he...

When Amy Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning in 2011 at age 27, popular music lost one of its most talented young voices. She had stunned the world in 2006 with her breakthrough album, Back To Black, which showcased her larger-than-life vocal range and songwriting skills that belayed her tender years. By the end of her life Winehouse had become infamous for her personal problems and drug-fueled exploits, but her music will endure long after the tabloid headlines are forgotten. While most of her songs are autobiographical, featuring lyrics brimming with equal parts wit and vulnerability, she wasn't afraid to add her own unique twist to familiar tunes.

I love strippers! Always have and always will. Having said that I have never been to a real burlesque show. Oh, I’ve been to tittie bars, sure, tittie bars, absolutely! Four years in the Navy and having been a bachelor all my life (I am engaged to a wonderful woman so cut me some slack here) I’ve been to plenty of bars where topless dancers do their shimmy and shake and hang from the pole and all that. But that isn’t really burlesque.
I can remember growing up in St. Louis in the 60s and 70s and looking at ads in the Globe Democrat and Post Dispatch for the Grand Burlesque downtown (was it on Washington?) and the Stardust Burlesque on DeBaliviere. How I wanted to go to those theaters, how I wanted to see Evelyn West and her $20,000 (was that the dollar amount?...

Singer, actor and song writer RuPaul was born Rupaul Andre Charles and does “woman” better than most women. His song ‘Supermodel (You Better Work)’ was a huge hit in the ’90s as was his beauty, eccentric personality and drag queen persona. He gained fame in the 1990s when he appeared in a wide variety of television programs and films, as Rupaul and as well has on occasion performed as a man usually billed as RuPaul Charles. He starred in several low-budget comedy films such as the Starrbooty and Trilogy of Terror series, The Connie Francis Story, Mahogany II, American Porn Star, Psycho Bitch, Voyeur and also appeared in B-52′s video Love Shack.
Rupaul also made noteable appearances in Spike Lee’s Crooklyn, To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar, Red Ribbon Blues, A Mother’s Prayer , The Brady Bunch Movie, Wigstock: The Movie , Smoke and A Very Brady Sequel.

Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network Carlos, David Fincher, Toy Story 3: New York Film Critics' Predictions I was dead wrong when I predicted that the Los Angeles Film Critics Association would pick Another Year's Lesley Manville as their Best Actress of 2010. So, what's a guy to do but make the same prediction for the New York Film Critics Circle? Else, I'd say Tilda Swinton will take home the Best Actress award for I Am Love. Now, if Kim Hye-ja wins for Mother it'll no longer be a "major upset." Indeed, she's a possibility, though I'd say that the Hollywood womenfolk would have a better chance: Annette Bening for The Kids Are All Right (and perhaps Mother and Child), Natalie Portman for Black Swan, Nicole Kidman for Rabbit Hole, Michelle Williams for Blue Valentine. Two other possibilities: Jennifer Lawrence for Winter's Bone and Noomi Rapace, who should be singled...

We're now officially in the time frame when every critic's organization in the ass end of anywhere is announcing their choices for the best of the year. And while I tend to ignore most of these I do always make a point of giving a look to the La Film Critics Association selection, not because they're at the hub of the industry but because they actually seem to get it. The La group tend to be the most likely to throw a wrinkle into proceedings - as they have this year - and, back in the day, they were also the group that awarded Terry Gilliam's Brazil Best Picture and essentially shamed the studio powers into giving the film a theatrical release in the Us. For that I will always think happy thoughts of them.

The Social Network won big today at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards picking up Best Picture and Best Screenplay along with a tie for Best Director (David Fincher) and Best Music/Score. Olivier Assayas’ Carlos also won big getting the runner up for Best Picture, Best Actor (Edgar Ramierz), and tieing for Best Director. It also picked up the Best Foreign Language Film award.
The acting awards offered up plenty of surprises with possibly Colin Firth being the only expected winner with Best Actor for The King’s Speech. The aformentioned Ramirez was the runner up for his performance in Carlos. In a surprising upset, Kim Hy-Ja’s performance in Mother beat out runner-up Jennifer Lawrence in Winter’s Bone for Best Actress. Lawrence was considered the favorite to grab this award however the Los Angeles Critics have been known to give out major awards to obscure or foreign films in the past.

The Oscar nominations have yet to be announced, but if you thought David Fincher’s The Social Network had people talking about it before, the film’s coronation by several Us film critics’ groups certainly won’t hurt its cause. In a sudden spasm of announcements, the Los Angeles, New York and Boston groups all handed their top prize to the story of Mark Zuckerberg and his first few Facebook "friends."Los Angeles named the film as best picture, while Fincher shared best director with Carlos’ Olivier Assayas. Colin Firth took best actor for The King’s Speech, and in a more surprising nod, Kim Hye-Ja got best actress for Mother, beating out runner-up Jennifer Lawrence for Winter’s Bone. There was another surprising – if soundly deserved – win for A Prophet’s Niels Arestrup as best supporting actor, and Animal Kingdom’s Jacki Weaver got supporting actress. The Los Angeles Film Critics Association announced their 2010 awards this afternoon and offered further evidence that the critics’ choice this year is “The Social Network,” which won best picture, best director (David Fincher), and best screenplay (Aaron Sorkin), and tied with another film for best score (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross). This is obviously encouraging news for “The Social Network” camp.
“The King’s Speech,” which most pundits believe will be the chief competition for “The Social Network” in the Oscar race, didn’t farely badly, but just not as well. It won best actor (Colin Firth) and finished second in voting for best supporting actor (Geoffrey Rush), screenplay (David Seidler), and production design (Eve Stewart).

The various film critics societies have kicked off awards season, making their picks for the best of filmmaking in 2010. Sunday (Dec. 12) both the Los Angeles Film Critics Association the Boston Society of Film Critics announced their choices and both had "The Social Network" as the Best Picture of the year.
The Washington D.C. Area Film Critics, which announced their picks a week ago, also had "The Social Network" as their top pick. Director David Fincher was also the unanimous choice amongst the three societies as Best Director, as was writer Aaron Sorkin for the screenplay.
The acting categories are a bit more diversified. Christian Bale in "The Fighter" for Best Supporting Actor made two of the three lists (Boston, D.C.) and Colin Firth in "The King's Speech" for Best Actor made two of the three lists (L.A., D.C.). Other than those two, there were no acting repeats.

The Los Angeles Film Critics announced their winners Sunday. The Social Network dominated the voting, beating out rival The King's Speech--although Colin Firth continues to rack up best actor wins--and Animal Kingdom's Jacki Weaver won yet another supporting actress award. While the La film critics pride themselves on not functioning as predictors of later awards such as the Oscars, they did basically throw away votes for best actress (Kim Hye-ja, Mother) and supporting actor (Niels Arestrup, A Prophet, which was eligible for last year's foreign Oscar). It makes more sense to release foreign films in their year of eligibility so that awards they accrue can boost the film while it's still current, as opposed to a year later. I put A Prophet on my 2009 ...

Justin Timberlake, Jesse Eisenberg in David Fincher's The Social Network The Los Angeles Film Critics Association is probably one of the two most influential — Oscarwise — film critics' groups in the United States. The other being, of course, the New York Film Critics Circle. (The National Society of Film Critics would come in third, chiefly because its choices tend to be less Oscar friendly.) The Los Angeles Film Critics Association announced their awards for 2010 today and in doing so continue the trend of naming David Fincher's The Social Network as the best film of the year. The film also took home Best Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin).
However, instead of winning director outright, David Fincher shares those honors with Carlos helmer Olivier Assayas. Additionally, the film tied for best score with Alexandre Despalt's score for Roman Polanski's The Ghost Writer. So it wasn't total domination, but Fincher's film did come away with the most awards.
At Best Actor, Oscar front-runner Colin Firth (The King's Speech) takes those honors with Carlos star Edgar Ramirez taking runner-up rather than the likes of Jesse Eisenbeg (The Social Network) or James Franco (127 Hours), the two actors most likely competing with Firth for Oscar's Best Actor.

Talk about a Hot Mama's Day!
Last night on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Kandi is hosting her "Kandi Koated Nights" webcast and has Kim as her guest. The topic? Cheaters? Does Kim consider herself one?
No way! And let's make it clear that she doesn't have "beef curtains" either! We also learn that Kandi has been in a contest with a friend to see who can remain celibate for a year.
Nene and Cynthia are hanging out more these days since Nene's marital problems with Gregg have surfaced. Since Nene's plastic surgeon okayed her guzzling down wine again, Nene complains to Cynthia about her disintegrating 13-year-old marriage to Gregg.
This terrifies Cynthia and confirms her fear of marriage.
Sheree preps for a dinner date with The Love Doctor aka Ty-e Muhammed and has her 24-year-old daughter Dawn, and her fiancee, come over to baby sit.

The 5th London Korean Film Festival returns this year on the 5th November with a showcase of 21screenings at 3 venues across London. So if you're in the mood for new work from the country that brought us recent wonders such as Old Boy, Mother and A Bittersweet Life then what better place to sample them than amongst some similarly enthused cinema-goers.
Though primarily at the Ica this year, the festival opens at the Odeon West End with Lee Jeong-beom's revenge thriller The Man From Nowhere, followed by Kim Jee-woon's much lauded and bloody I Saw The Devil, both complete with director Q&As.
Closing the festival is Im Sang-soo's remake of the classic 1960s drama, The Housemaid, whilst inbetween there's a Jang Jin retrospective, the Frightfest-screened revenge shocker Bedevilled and the mystery thriller Bestseller (already slated for a Us remake...)

You can tell a lot about a movie from its opening shot. Here, a glum, rather ordinary woman in her late 60s wanders into a remote area. Checking no one is around to see her, she steals a few precious moments while enjoying a guilty dance. This deceptively simple, low-key shot tells us plenty: this woman has lived a life, and she's a person – not just an "old person". Most of all, it tells us the director really knows what he's doing; this will be a story that, although unconventional in delivery, will be well-told and engaging. That last fact won't be news to anyone who has seen Korean director Bong Joon-ho's previous films, such as the merciless police procedural thriller Memories Of Murder or his off-kilter monster movie The Host. The mother of the title (the incredible Kim Hye-ja) has her life turned upside down...

Mother
Stars: Kim Hye-ja, Won Bin, Jin Ku, Yun Je-mun, Jun Mi-sun, Lee Young-Suck, Ha Mun-nee, Chung Woo-hee | Written by Park Eun-kyo, Bong Joon-ho, Park Wun-kyo | Directed by Bong Joon-ho
Mother is a detective story with a welcome number of twists. When young schoolgirl Ah Jung (Han Mun-nee) is murdered in a sleepy South Korean town, a simple-minded young man, Do-Joon (Won Bin), is arrested and quickly imprisoned. However, his doting mother (Kim Hye-ja) doesn’t believe the charges for one minute and sets out to find the real killer on her own, risking her mind and her life in the process.
The film starts out quirkily enough – with a peculiar dance scene in a field – and there’s a good dose of humour, but any inkling that the movie is about to venture into whimsical Park Chan-Wook territory is belayed by the pitch-black tone that soon sets in.

Craig here. It's Wiest week on Take Three.
Today: Dianne Wiest
Take One: Avon calling!
As Peg Boggs, the perkiest, friendliest Avon lady you’ll ever meet at the cinema, Wiest introduced Edward Scissorhands (1990) to the curious inhabitants of pastel-perfect suburbia with the kindliest demeanour seen in a Tim Burton film; she’s the most good-natured character he’s conjured yet. She trots from house to house in matching mauve, enthusiastically spouting her cosmetic spiel, but getting no joy from the idle ladies of Burton’s uniformly stylised Fantasyville, America. So off to the dank, dark castle on the hill she goes - and finds a guy with mangled scissors for hands. Edward needs love, acceptance and Peg offers it; she’ll be the mother he never had. But she thinks he needs a makeover too - it’s his scarred and pallid complexion which brightly troubles her: “at the...

Bong Joon-ho scored a massive international hit a few years ago with his original creature feature The Host, which further raised the profile of South Korean cinema (which frankly is worth getting very excited about). Whereas other film-makers enjoy building up suspense and atmosphere he unleashed the beast in the opening scene as a giant aquatic monstrosity wrecks havoc in downtown Seoul.
Mother, his latest feature, is a much more intimate and less grand affair focusing on the strange but powerful relationship between a seemingly docile young man and his mum. Like The Host, Bong Joon-ho opens the film with a distinct generic touch before detouring into much more interesting avenues of exploration. Tenderness and violence go hand in hand.
Actors Kim Hye-ja and Won Bin deliver note-perfect performances playing completely against type as the family under great pressure. Their sheer likeability helps the viewer sympathise with their characters plight and issues.

Chicago – Our film critic Matt Fagerholm may have felt that “The Good, The Bad, The Weird” valued style over substance to a fault (read his review) but this critic still holds it as one of the best films of the year; a joyful cavalcade of modern action and spaghetti western archetypes that’s unlike anything else released in 2010. Don’t miss this excellent movie now that it’s on Blu-ray.

South Korea is one of the most vibrant centers of filmmaking in the world right now with Bong Joon-ho (“Mother,” “The Host”), Park Chan-wook (“Thirst,” “Oldboy”) and Kim Ji-Woon (“A Tale of Two Sisters”) leading the way. “Harmony” is an inspirational tale following a female prison choir, headlined by popular actress Kim Yoon Jin of “Lost” fame. Marking the directorial debut of Kang Dae Gyu (who previously served as an assistant on “Haeundae”), the film also boasts the presence of award-winning music director Lee Byung Woo (who also worked on “Mother” and “The Host”) along with a strong supporting cast that includes Na Moon Hee (recently in “Twilight Gangsters”, Kang Hye Won (Haeundae”), Jang Young Nam (“Aeja”) and Lee Da Hee (“Mother and Daughters”). The film’s positive message certainly rang true with Korean audiences, attracting over 3 million admissions and emerging as one of the highest earning hits of 2010. Kim Yoon Jin stars as Jeong Hye, a woman who lands a ten year stretch in jail after killing her violent husband. Whilst behind bars, she gives birth to a son, who gifts her and her cellmates with...

Chicago – Korean Bong Joon-Ho is one of our best working filmmakers with three films that deserve consideration among the best of the last decade — the procedural thriller “Memories of Murder,” the brilliant monster movie “The Host,” and the dark drama of this year’s “Mother,” now released on Blu-ray and DVD. With extensive special features, the Blu-ray of this mesmerizing film should bring one of 2010’s best films to a wider audience.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0
Like so many of our best filmmakers, Bong brilliantly plays with audience expectations. He displays his clear inspirations — Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, others — while also feeling completely original. “Mother” is such a daring, unique film that it’s almost difficult to capture in words. It is filled with several remarkable twists and turns but it’s also far from your typical mystery/thriller. In an era when more and more films feel produced by a machine,...

Maybe it’s because we’re sisters and we work together that we felt an instant connection to the stars of the new docudrama Jersey Couture. After all, the people who own and operate Diane & Co. boutique in Freehold, New Jersey are family.
Mother, Diane Scali, started the go-to life-changing event dress shop 32 years ago. Her daughters, Kim and Chrissy Gimbale, help her run the showroom. Her son, Anthony, is a party DJ who also helps out around the place. And Dad, Sal, chips in to deal with customer support.
The store has become the go-to place for any girl looking for a sweet 16 dress, bride-to-be shopping for her gown, or frustrated fashionista searching for the appropriate outfit for a special occasion.
Their formula for success is simple – they deal honestly and lovingly with every customer. No one gets out with an unflattering fit and everyone leaves laughing.

"My best Mother's Day was probably my first Mother's Day, and now my second will be this day because it's my first as a grandma.
