Storyline
Plot Summary |
A vicious London gangster, Jack Carter, travels to Newcastle for his brother's funeral. He begins to suspect that his brother's death was not an accident, and sets out to follow a complex trail of lies, deceit, cover-ups and backhanders through Newcastle's underworld, leading, he hopes, to the man who ordered his brother killed. Carter exhibits all the ruthlessness and unstoppability of the cyborg in The Terminator (1984), or Walker in Point Blank (1967), and he and the other characters in this movie are prone to sudden, brutal acts of violence.

Did You Know?
Trivia | Writer and director Mike Hodges was surprised that a star of Michael Caine's stature would want to play Carter. Caine said "One of the reasons I wanted to make that picture was my background. In English movies, gangsters were either stupid or funny. I wanted to show that they're neither. Gangsters are not stupid, and they're certainly not very funny." He identified with Carter as a memory of his working class upbringing, having friends and family members who were involved in crime and felt Carter represented a path his life might have taken under different circumstances: "Carter is the dead-end product of my own environment, my childhood. I know him well. He is the ghost of Michael Caine." See more » |
Goofs | Kinnear's LandRover [BYX 564B], driven by Eric Paice throughout most of the movie, is the same vehicle used by the Police when they raid Kinnear's mansion near the end. See more » |

Quotes |
Cliff Brumby:
[blocking Carter's path]
Listen, I don't like it when some tough nut comes pushin' his way in and out of my house in the middle of the night! Bloody well tell me who sent you! Jack Carter: You're a big man, but you're in bad shape. With me it's a full time job. Now behave yourself. [Brumby takes a swing at Carter, who grabs his hand, punches him, and then slaps him in the face for good measure] Jack Carter: [as he's leaving] Goodnight, Mrs. Brumby. See more » |
