'Black Mama, White Mama' belongs to the short lived and now largely forgotten Filipino prison movie cycle of the early 70s. Blaxsploitation icon Pam Grier ('Coffy', 'Foxy Brown', 'Jackie Brown') and the fairly obscure Margaret Markov, are teamed up as prison escapees, chained together and being pursued by cops, soldiers, gangsters and revolutionaries. And Sid Haig dressed as a cowboy. Haig ('Spider Baby', 'THX 1138') worked with Pam Grier in several movies during this period, but doesn't really share much screen time in this one. The rest of the supporting cast includes Lynn Borden ('Dirty Mary Crazy Larry') and the movies director Eddie Romero, and Jonathan Demme, then still a Roger Corman protege, gets a story credit, even though it's basically a rip off of 'The Defiant Ones'. 'Black Mama White Mama' is by no means the best women-in-prison exploitation movie (for me that's 'Chained Heat' followed closely by Demme's 'Chained Heat'), but it's enjoyable enough, and 70s trash fans will lap it up.
