Born: July 1, 1916
Best known for: “The Adventures of Robin Hood,” “Gone With the Wind,” and two Oscar-winning performances, “To Each His Own” and “The Heiress”
First claim to fame: Gossip magazines offered endless coverage of her feud with sister Joan Fontaine, which lasted for decades
Second (and more important) claim to fame: She helped end the old studio system. While under a 7-year contract with Warner Bros., she refused several roles and was suspended multiple times. When her contract ended, WB said she still owed them six months, for the time off during suspension. She made the unprecedented move of suing the studio and the judge agreed with her, saying the system was one of “peonage.” On March 15, 1944, Variety ran the headline “De Havilland Free Agent.” Her career flourished after that, and actors were no longer beholden to studios, which empowered them and their agents in all future negotiations.

A new indie horror film is in development. The film is titled Death Ward 13. Inspired by Don't Look in the Basement (1973) and Edgar Allen Poe's short story "The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether" (1845), this title is being developed by director Todd Nunes (All Through the House) and writer Tara Knight. Filming will take place in Los Angeles, in the Winter of 2016. And now, a movie poster is available for the film. The film's story deals with Stephen's Sanitarium. This facility is slated to close. Four nursing students are helping with the transition. But, the lunatics are running the asylum. Under attack, the nurses quickly learn who is in charge - the criminally insane! Bone Crusher Films will produce this horror outing. This will be the first production for this studio. And, more details will be posted on Death Ward 13, once they are released. Release Date: 2017. Director: Todd Nunes.

There's a special place in my black heart for '70s horror films that are just the right blend of shlock and and grit. Like-minded fans may recall the 1973 film Don't Look In The Basement, aka The Forgotten, aka what I would argue is one of several influences on Edgar Wright's fantastic faux grindhouse trailer, Don't.The surprisingly good Don't Look In The Basement has now spawned a sequel more than 40 years later, aptly titled Don't Look In The Basement 2. Director Anthony Brownrigg, son of the director of the first film, S.F. Brownrigg, has returned to the original shooting location for the newest tale. "The film is more of a paranormal thriller than drive-in horror," Brownrigg says.Twitch was able to get an exclusive quote from star...

Check out another clip from Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones called "Don't Go in the basement" starring Andrew Jacobs, Molly Ephraim, Richard Cabral, Jorge Diaz, Jessica Tyler Brown, Eddie J. Fernandez, Carlos Pratts, Chloe Csengery, David Fernandez Jr., Noemi Gonzalez and Julian Works. Sure, there's indie horror, but this just looks awful. Watch the clip and you'll see for yourselves. In yet another Paranormal movie, Jesse (Jacobs) is "marked" and is pursued by mysterious forces while his family and friends try to save him.

As of now, Kate Beckinsale isn’t brining Selene back for another round of vampire-werewolf wars, but she is in talks for a new film from The Call’s Brad Anderson.
The actress is reported to be negotiating a starring role in Eliza Graves, a psych-thriller based on Edgar Allan Poe’s early work, The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether.
“Beckinsale will play the title character of Eliza, a patient at a mental institution in which the inmates have taken over and are posing as doctors. She becomes the object of affection of a newly arrived Harvard Medical School grad who has no idea of the topsy-turvy world he just entered,” The Hollywood Reporter said.
This is not the first time The System of Doctor Tarr has been adapted for the screen. S.F. Brownrigg’s The Forgotten, Juan López Moctezum’s The Mansion of Madness, and surrealist Jan Švankmajer’s film Lunacy,...

This week American Horror Story returned (to record-shattering numbers) for a new season of insanity - set, appropriately enough, in a sanitarium for the criminally insane. Insane asylums have been hotbeds of movie drama for decades, and bring with them their own set of tropes, cliches, and plot devices. We've compiled a few of our favorite asylum fixtures here, and the film that we feel did each the best.

Parrish Randall is a Texas actor who has a lot of cool stuff going on. He’s part of the team putting together the “Don’t Look in the Basement” remake together and he recently got to work on one of the Chillerama segments that we’ll be seeing this fall. Randall talks about his filming experiences and a few more upcoming projects in the works. Check out my latest Versus with actor and all around cool guy Parrish Randall.
Brian S- First off, how'd you get into acting and filmmaking?
Parrish Randall- I grew up watching the old classics on TV...you know, the Bogie, Jimmy Stewart, John Garfield type of films and was always mesmerized that the medium of film could take the viewer on adventures for two hours that one could never imagine going on. Pretty cool, I thought, even at six years old watching these films.

The first thing people will notice about horror director Alan Rowe Kelly (Don't Look In The Basement, I'll Bury You Tomorrow) is that he is a gender bender, but Kelly has been bending more then genders his entire career as he has broken out the idea of conventionality. At the age of 39, with 40 just right around the corner, he had an epiphany. Bored with a career as a stylist, he made the sudden and dramatic move to horror. First testing the waters as an author, he switched over to the world of indie horror film directing where he won great acclaim for "I"ll Bury You Tomorrow". As he continued to direct films, he also started making a name for himself in the indie horror world as an actor playing power players, agents, something that rhymes with witch, etc. These were powerful, empowered characters that personally reflected upon Alan Rowe Kelly himself.

In a bit of a sad turn of events we're sorry to report that director Josh Vargas has vacated the director's seat on the long talked about remake of Don't Look in the Basement. Yep, that's the bad news. The good? As of now the project is still very much happening.
According to Vargas, "Due to certain circumstances, and much to my regret, I am resigning from my position as Director of the "Don't Look In The Basement" remake. With the Producers postponing principal photography until May, as well as a few other circumstances, certain prior commitments within that specified time frame have forced me to make this decision, which is not one that I haven't made lightly. To my knowledge, "Basement" is still slated to shoot in May, with Parrish Randall serving as director. And the casting news just keeps on coming for director Josh (Sway) Vargas' remake of the S.F. Brownrigg film Don't Look in the Basement. This time reuniting two of the horror genre's most beloved actors!
Together again on screen for the first time since the original Night of the Living Dead in 1968, Judith O'Dea and Bill HInzman have officially signed on for Vargas' film to play Dr. Geraldine Masters and Dr. Roy Stevens. But that's not all! We'll also be seeing Charlotte Kemp (Frankenhooker) as Allyson King, Maggie Conwell (Possum Walk) as Jennifer Downing, and Billy Gram as Detective Childers.
"My inner fanboy is going nuts over working with Judy O'Dea as Dr. Masters," Vargas tells us. "We always knew that she would be perfect for the role, and not being able to announce our excitement over working with her has been torture. I'm glad to finally let that cat out of the bag,...

Dave kicks off a new occasional series, looking at the films that have courted controversy over the years. Where better to start than The Exorcist?
There are a fair few movies that have courted controversy over the decades, be it a film about cheese under a microscope or the Asian torture film, Grotesque. Some of these films you will have heard of.: Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Evil Dead, Cannibal Holocaust, Clockwork Orange and, the subject of this feature, The Exorcist.
Others, I'll be surprised if anyone but a handful of people will have ever experienced: Don't Go Near The Park, Don't Go In The Woods, Don't Look In The Basement and Don't Tell Mom, The Babysitter's Dead. Okay, that last one isn't a video nasty, but fits in with the motif of things not to do!
In the 1980s, as many of you will probably know, the video nasty boom was at its height.

Director Josh Vargas (Sway) dropped us another line today updating us on the casting for his remake of the S.F. Brownrigg film Don't Look in the Basement. There's good stuff coming, folks.
You can add three names to the festivities! Brownrigg, will be playing Sergeant Craig Jaffe, one of the more dangerous patients in the sanitarium.
The trio join the already announced Brooke Lewis (iMurders, Dahmer vs. Gacy) as Charlotte Beale, Kelli Maroney (Chopping Mall, Night of the Comet, Fast Times at Ridgemont High) as Nurse Jane St. Claire, Kristen Hall (Sweatshop,...

Director Josh Vargas (Sway) dropped us a line today letting us in on some pretty cool news -- he's been signed to write, direct, and executive produce a new remake of the S.F Brownrigg film Don't Look in the Basement.
Not to be confused with the previously announced Alan Rowe Kelly project of the same name, Vargas tells us his Don't Look in the Basement will be an entirely different beast.
The upcoming remake is being produced by Parrish Randall and Burton Bailey and will be shot in South Texas at the same exact location as the original. That's pretty badass if you ask us!
"The original 1973 film is one that not only I, but Burt and Parrish hold very close to our hearts, explains Vargas. "This will not be a 'reimagining' or 'reinvention', but a straight-up remake of a great horror film that deserves a shot at a new generation of horror fans.

Filming for Alan Rowe Kelly's remake of the drive-in classic, Don't Look in the Basement has been postponed. According to Kelly the bad economy is taking its toll on indie films this year, but he hopes to have the film up and running by 2010. In the meantime, Kelly plans on completing the anthology Gallery of Fear starring an all-star indie horror cast including Debbie Rochon, Raine Brown, Terry West, Jerry Murdock, plus many more. Fans can expect Gallery sometime around February/March 2010.

Well, it seems like these days every other news item in the horror world is about a remake…and this is no exception.
Indie director Alan Rowe Kelly, who received some minor buzz for his first film I’ll Bury You Tomorrow in 2002, talked to Fangoria while at the Chicago Weekend of Horrors and dished with them that he intends on filming a remake of the 1973 gorefest Don’t Look in the Basement (also known to some as The Forgotten).
Kelly, owner and producer with SouthPaw Pictures, told Fango, “I love the first film. I really want to do justice to it and it looks as if it will be set and shot in Southern Indiana. Debbie Rochon and Raine Brown will be in the cast and so is Anthony Brownrigg who is the son of S.F. Brownrigg (who directed the original).”
