Storyline

Plot Summary

In Milan, the worker Nullo falls in love with his Sicilian colleague Carmela. The chances for a happy relationship are conceivably poor, because the Lombard Nullo is a trade unionist and unbaptized. Carmela, on the other hand, was born into the Catholic respectability and family tradition of the South. A neo-realist melodrama that combines the love story between a northern Italian factory worker who is an anarchist trade unionist and a girl who emigrated with her family from Sicily with socially critical polemics.

Trivia The film was presented at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival. According to an anecdote director Luigi Comencini shared in his autobiography, the festival's jury presided by René Clair was strongly considering to award the film's lead Stefania Sandrelli with the Best Actress award. However, juror Monica Vitti was able to talk the other members out of it by revealing the fact-- of which they were unaware-- that Sandrelli had been dubbed in the film with a Southern Italy accent by colleague Carla Todero.
