Raro Video continues remastering rare and obscure Italian titles with the long unavailable 1970 curio from Duccio Tessari, Death Occurred Last Night. A rare hybrid of police thriller and giallo, this fascinating title is a definite highlight in the little known Tessari’s varied filmography. Most noted for his work in spaghetti westerns, those unfamiliar with his work will surely be interested in seeking out other available titles. As seedy and ridiculous as it is intriguing and unfailingly amusing, its attention to character and narrative development sets it apart from similar titles of the time period, preceding comparable American fare such as Paul Schrader’s 1979 Hardcore.

According to Deadline, Sony Pictures is moving forward with a planned reboot of the “Zorro” franchise based on the 2005 Isabel Allende novel, which centers on the young Zorro who witnesses the brutal injustices dealt to Native Americans.
Screenwriter Chris Boal, brother of Mark Boal (“Zero Dark Thirty,” “The Hurt Locker”), has come onboard to rewrite a draft previously penned by Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia. Boal was a competitive fencer on the national circuit before becoming a writer.
This new project will have nothing to do with the Antonio Banderas films The Mask of Zorro and The Legend of Zorro but will have a sort of “Batman Begins” style of approach, with a new backstory, gritty realism and emotional core. So for those of you who have seen the Banderas films, this will follow Anthony Hopkins character’s backstory. There will be swordplay, combined with the martial arts that came...

Raro Video resurrects an excitingly obscure title this month with Liliana Cavani’s 1967 film, The Year of the Cannibals, a counter culture art house film modernizing Sophocles’ play Antigone to explore modern political unrest, here in the streets of Milan. Cavani, perhaps best known for her notorious 1974 film The Night Porter, posing star Charlotte Rampling in one of her most iconic roles, has crafted a stunningly photographed and arresting film in this early work that’s ripe for rediscovery. Shown in art houses and retrospectives after receiving favorable reaction upon domestic release and major film festival play (Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes), the title never secured distribution in the Us, though this is mostly due to Cavani’s refusal to change the bleak finale when a major studio approached her to buy the film.

As long as there as been cinema, there has been Zorro. From the silent era to the multiplex, from Douglas Fairbanks to Gael Garcia Bernal, the masked hero has caught the imagination of both filmmakers and audiences. But of course, there are the forgotten films and versions of the character as well, and Duccio Tessari's 1975 "Zorro" is certainly a curiosity. Starring famed French thesp Alain Delon in the lead role, surrounded by a mostly Italian supporting cast with everyone getting dubbed later into English, perhaps the best way sum up the experience of the film is point out that the man who provided the wigs, Grazia Miccinelli, gets his own credit. Indeed, there is nothing about this movie that is subtle or nuanced for better and mostly for worse, and that goes for the story as well. Set in a fake South American country, Zorro finds himself taking on...

Put a black mask on Alain Delon's face -- and a sword and a bullwhip in his hands -- and the venerable people's outlaw Zorro instantly becomes a dashing, insoucient hero. In retrospect, the marriage of Zorro and Delon seems inevitable. Created in 1919 by writer Johnston McCulley as the featured character in a five-part pulp magazine serial, he was instantly recognized as fodder for the movies by none other than Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford. The Mark of Zorro made its appearance in theaters barely a year later, the first of numerous page-to-screen adaptations. By 1975, Delon was more than a decade and a half into his own international stardom, and he picks up Zorro almost from its first frame and carries it on...

Pretty much the comic book Oscars, the 2012 nominations for the Eisner awards have been announced. There is quite are large showing from Marvel in the superhero department, not so much from DC. Surprising, considering the company’s high profile New 52 relaunch. Save for Jeff Lemire’s nomination for Best Writer, most of DC’s nomination are pre-relaunch, or from their Vertigo imprint which has been left untouched by the New 52. The nominations are usually as controversial as the Oscars, with books and whole companies being left out, much to fans, sometimes, anger and confusion.
A full list of the nominations are below, courtesy of Bleeding Cool, and the award will take place at this years San Diego Comic Con.
Best Short Story “A Brief History of the Art Form Known as Hortisculpture,” by Adrian Tomine, in Optic Nerve #12 (Drawn & Quarterly) “Harvest of Fear,” by Jim Woodring, in The Simpsons’ Treehouse of Horror #17 (Bongo) “The Phototaker,...
