Warning: The following contains mild spoilers for the Ghostbusters franchise.
Yes, Ghostbusters is a horror movie – gateway horror to be exact. Setting aside the fact that the title literally contains the word “ghost,” a foundational element of the scariest genre, the franchise follows a group of paranormal researchers who battle entities attacking from beyond the grave. After countless rewatches, the classic films and newer sequels may not scare us much anymore, but how many times have we as genre fans asserted that a film does not have to be “scary” to be considered horror?
Genre classification is nebulous and any film that centers on ghosts has a place in the sprawling house of horror. Yes, it’s true that most viewers over the age of thirteen will find more to laugh about than scream while watching a Ghostbusters film, but each entry contains a handful of terrifying moments. The Ghostbusters Netflix Series Is In Development, With Scripts & Key Art In The Works. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Gil Kenan, the director of Frozen Empire, dropped some news about the Ghostbusters Netflix cartoon. It’s called “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” and picks up after the 2021 flick “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” mixing in both new and old Ghostbusters characters. These recent movies are like building on the universe set up in the ’80s originals, just like how “The Real Ghostbusters” cartoon did from ’86 to ’91, and its follow-up “Extreme Ghostbusters” in ’97.
Kenan was chatting on “A Trip to the Movies with Alex Zane” about this new Ghostbusters cartoon for Netflix. He said that he had just checked out this big art presentation for the show and that they were full steam ahead with making scripts and artwork. While he remained somewhat cryptic regarding specific details, he expressed that the current era presents an exhilarating opportunity for...

Ghostbusters movies stretch credulity, but this is ridiculous.
At the start of Ghostbusters II, Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) perform for bored kids at a birthday party. It’s only been five years since they blew up the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man in downtown New York and destroyed Gozer’s portal atop a city high rise. And yet, no one remembers the work the boys did to save the city.
In Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the Ghostbusters are completely unknown to Gen Z, even to the grandchildren of Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), even to a kid so into podcasts that he calls himself Podcast. It’s only been 30 years since the team drove the Statue of Liberty down the center of the city.

“Ghostbusters” isn’t just a movie; it’s a cultural touchstone. Released in 1984, the original film ruled the hearts of audiences with its unique blend of humor, horror, and supernatural thrills. The story follows a team of parapsychologists who chase and catch New York City’s rogue ghosts.

Lionsgate has debuted the trailer for Guy Ritchie’s Henry Cavill-led WWII actioner ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.’
Based upon recently declassified files of the British War Department and inspired by true events, the movie is an action-comedy that tells the story of the first-ever special forces organization formed during WWII by UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill and a small group of military officials including author Ian Fleming.
The top-secret combat unit, composed of a motley crew of rogues and mavericks, goes on a daring mission against the Nazis using entirely unconventional and utterly “ungentlemanly” fighting techniques. Ultimately their audacious approach changed the course of the war and laid the foundation for the British Sas and modern Black Ops warfare.
Directed by Ritchie, the cast includes Henry Cavill, Henry Golding, Alan Ritchson, Alex Pettyfer, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Eiza Gonzalez, Cary Elwes, Babs Olusanmokun, Til Schweiger, Henry Zaga, Mohammad Nour Hakmi,...

JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and Psycho II.

The 1980s was a golden era for TV animation. It was the decade of Thundercats, Inspector Gadget, Transformers, Ducktales, The Smurfs, He-Man and The Masters of the Universe, Care Bears, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Yet arguably, the best of them all was The Real Ghostbusters.
The show arrived at a time when studios were eager to translate box office gold into something palatable for younger audiences. It didn’t always quite go to plan, of course, as short-lived and ill-advised animated incarnations of everything from Rambo to The Karate Kid can attest.
But The Real Ghostbusters was different, running for 140 episodes across seven seasons.
It was a little different from the film. For one thing, the title had to be tweaked due to a dispute with Filmation, who was making an animated version...

"Star Trek: The Animated Series," originally just called "Star Trek," debuted on September 8, 1973. It will soon be commemorating its 50th anniversary. To celebrate, as announced at this year's San Diego Comic Con, Paramount will be newly animating several "Star Trek" characters and tapping extant "Star Trek" actors to produce several promotional bumpers in the old "Tas" style. Jonathan Frakes will play Commander William Riker in one such bumper, Armin Shimerman will return to play Quark in another, while Doug Jones will appear as Saru from "Star Trek: Discovery."
The announcement was given by "Star Trek" creative consultant Casper Kelly, who previously worked on "Star Trek: Short Treks."
"Star Trek: The Animated Series" famously reunited most of the original series cast (Walter Koenig does not appear) and merrily continued the five-year mission of the U.S.S. Enterprise. James Doohan reprised his role as Scotty, but also took on a lot of the show's supporting characters,...

Every year, Strictly Come Dancing brings its yearly spook-fest back to the dance floor.
By now, we’ve seen hundreds of dancers take part in the themed competition week, hoping to impress the judges with routines that are less trick, more treat.
For fans, Halloween is one of the biggest nights in the Strictly calendar. Design-wise, it doesn’t get more extra than this, with the perfect performance featuring a spooky costume and song choice that are well linked together. However, it’s not always easy and we often see a slightly spooky song title pushed together with a random costume that doesn’t exactly make sense or scream Halloween. After all, there are only so many times the show can do the “Monster Mash”.
The best Halloween dances bring all these elements together, from design, to music, to (naturally) the actual dancing. Among this top 10 we have a lot of tangos,...

Horror changes with each generation. In the ‘50s, societal fear of the Atomic bomb was projected back at us through the use of metaphorical figures such as giant lizards, oversized sea-creatures, and warped representations of nature too often taken for granted. And then there’s fun fare like The Crawling Eye (1958), which posits that visitors from space don’t always come in peace, nor are they willing to go quietly. I guess films don’t always have to reflect society.
This British independent production was released at home under its original title The Trollenberg Terror (also the name of the 1956 BBC serial it is based on) in October with a stateside rollout at the end of the year; unloved by critics (and mocked by Mystery Science Theater 3000), the film satiated the drive-in circuit looking for cheap thrills and cheaper monsters. But The Crawling Eye offers up more - atmosphere,...

The original Ghostbusters from 1984 captured the imagination of a generation in a way few films do. As a kid, I was obsessed with the spooky-but-silly world director Ivan Reitman and writers Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis created. I watched The Real Ghostbusters cartoon religiously, had Ghostbusters-themed birthdays, and experienced a memorable Christmas in which Santa left Slimer, The Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man, the Fire House Headquarters, and Ecto-1 under the tree. I idolized Peter Venkman and Egon Spengler and spent entire days busting ghosts with my proton pack, ghost trap, Ecto-Goggles, and Pke meter. For "Ghostheads" — diehard fans of the franchise — Ghostbusters was their childhood. But even though I have many fond memories of my time with the boys in gray, I would never consider myself among them. Honestly, I was (and always will be) a Star Wars fan first and foremost. As a devotee of that seminal space saga,...

A history of paranormal exterminators in pop culture pre-1984.
Anytime you have a remake or reboot of a popular movie or franchise, fans of the original are going to whine about it. With Ghostbusters, there’s a new level of objection, some of it stemming from the same sort of nostalgic ownership of any beloved property from childhood and some of it arising out of misogyny. The only thing they ought to be concerned with is whether or not fans of the new movie will recognize its roots. And that’s not exclusive to the 1984 movie it’s based on and its 1989 sequel, Ghostbusters II.
The Ghost Busters
Most famously, there was already something titled The Ghost Busters, a live-action TV series for children that ran for 15 episodes in 1975 and featured two men and a gorilla hunting mostly spirits and also sometimes famous monsters like Dracula and Dr. Frankenstein’s Creature. The...

Anyway, as the Ghostbusters launch is just days away, you might think you need to brush up on the most recent film featuring the apparition fighters so that you’re prepared. The folks at Honest Trailers have done this for you, condensing the 110-minute Ghostbusters 2 into a four-and-a-half minute clip. In the process, they remind us how unfunny the sequel really was. If you’d told me that the worst thing about a new Ghostbusters film would be Bill Murray, I would have laughed in your face. And yet… here we are. Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters is, above all else, a real Ghostbusters movie. If you’re a fan of the 1984 original (as most comedy fans are), one of the things that’s interesting as you watch this one is the way it echoes off of that film. It is no simple remake, but neither is it a radical reinvention of the core idea. It’s simply a different riff on the same idea, with a solid dose of fan service thrown in to help make the transition from the old to the new. The script, by Feig and Katie Dippold, does some big things different, and the choices they make are intriguing. First and foremost, though, Ghostbusters is a big fat slice of silly summer entertainment,...

I’m aware of The Ghost Busters but I’ve never actually seen it. As far as Groovie Goolies goes, I’m never even heard of it, at least not that I can recall. […]...

How many comedians who also bust ghosts can you fit in one picture? The original Ghostbusters cast and the new found out today. Sony also just debuted a featurette on each Ghostbuster from Paul Feig's film, a closer look at the Ecto-1, and you can hear a sampling of the new theme song from Fall Out Boy and Missy Elliott. As we reported previously, the original cast will meet with the new today on Jimmy Kimmel Live to celebrate Ghostbusters Day. And here's your proof. Happy #GhostbustersDay!! pic.twitter.com/UzJVjSt5Iw — Melissa McCarthy (@melissamccarthy) June 8, 2016 Left to right starting in the back it's Bill Murray, Leslie Jones, Dan Aykroyd (who recently gave his thoughts on the film), and Ernie Hudson. Then down in front we've got Annie Potts, Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy, and Kristen Wiig. Paul Feig posted another photo and also mentioned Sigourney Weaver's absence was...

We've got another international trailer for Paul Feig's Ghostbusters to share with you today, and it's probably not going to change your mind about this movie. It's interesting to see how much hate is being spewed at this movie. Regardless of all the things that I've seen that I don't like about it, I'm trying to keep an open mind. The original Ghostbusters is one of my favorite films of all time! I've gotta hold on to some kind of hope that this reboot will be good. If it's not, well... shit. At least I can say I went in wanting it to be good.
This trailer features a bit of new footage in it that includes Kristen Wiig as Erin Gilbert freaking out and drenched in slime and yelling into her video camera, "Ghosts are real! Ghosts are real!" It also includes Chris Hemsworth as Kevin telling the...

If you have any connection to the Internet (and you do), and don’t have positive feelings for the upcoming Ghostbusters film, Sony hears you, but their response to your response to trailers is a little confusing.
It isn’t just that people from the studio are somewhat dismissive of the negative reaction –
“What tends to happen with a beloved property is the fanboy or the fangirl shows up and says, ‘How dare you remake this?’ ” says Sony domestic marketing president Dwight Caines.
– and it isn’t simply the fairly ridiculous, PC-armor-inspired response by director Paul Feig, who suggested that perhaps those who don’t like the trailers are sexist. (It isn’t so much that he said it actually, but a lot of fans said, and then he said, “uhhh… well, yeah.” — Ok, or something like that.)
No, what’s odd is the recent push of articles, like the...

Director Greydon Clark is not a name thrown around a lot. Horror fans will know him (probably) for 1977’s Satan’s Cheerleaders. The rest of filmdom need not apply. However, his best film, Without Warning (1980), would end up resonating in such a way as to inspire Predator (1987), Schwarzenegger’s Alien in the Jungle box office smash. And when I say inspire, I mean they stole the concept. But what Without Warning lacks in testosterone and Hollywood bankrolls, it makes up in B movie charm and a winsome personality. You can’t help but fall in love with the damn thing.
Released by Filmways Pictures in New York, in September 1980, Without Warning (Aka It Came…Without Warning) had a scattered release – dribs and drabs in smaller markets, and don’t forget Finland (who could?). Made for a meager $150,000 Us the film was given a real dine and dash release, I’m...

A lot of people ask me, "Creepy, how did you first come to love horror movies so much?" Well, growing up in the Seventies, there was plenty to go around. There were TV classics like Gargoyles, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, and any number of TV Movies of the Week, and there was also...
There was also a ton of weird and quirky bits of monster-themed kids programming. Usually "The Munsters" and "The Land of the Lost" get all the love, and rightly so. They're absolute classics. That being said, we're gonna talk about some other things here. Things you may not have known even existed. For instance, were you aware that way before Venkmen, Spengler, Stantz and Zeddmore there was a whole other set of Ghostbusters? How about a different Monster Squad? Got your attention? Good. Sit back, relax, and get ready to soak up some lunacy as we revisit.

Lidsville -Sid Krofft talked to me over the phone. That’s almost as wild and weird as the shows he created with his brother Marty that dominated the ’70s. Their live action Saturday morning series mixed puppets and people went perfect with the sugar rush from a fresh bowl of Count Chocula. This was like a weird childhood dream as I had so many questions that had puzzled me since childhood. Krofft was eager to give answers.
He was excited about Vivendi Entertainment’s recent release of H.R. Pufnstuf: The Complete Series Collector’s Edition. There’s also a normal H.R. Pufnstuf: The Complete Series. What’s the difference? A cool bobblehead of H.R. Pufnstuf. I’ve had little contact with the bobblehead since my two year-old has turned it into her new best friend. I told Sid Krofft how another generation has embraced the lizard hero of my youth.

Another one of television's greatest character actors has been claimed and is no longer with us. While today's generation may know him primarily as Seinfeld's Uncle Leo, generations of fans will remember him from so much more.
According to The Hollywood Reporter Len Lesser died Wednesday in Burbank of pneumonia related to cancer. He was 88.
Over his incredible six-decade career, which amounts to more than 500 appearances on film, television and the stage, Len has appeared on many staples of genre television including "The Ghost Busters", "The Munsters", "The Outer Limits", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", "Land of the Giants", "Kolchak: The Night Stalker", and many more.
At this time we here at Dread Central would like to take a moment to offer our sincerest condolences to Lesser's friends, family, and constituents. Thank you for your dedication to the entertainment industry and for all the laughs and scares you provided along your very long road.

Oakland — Just in time for the holiday season, the Gravy has arrived.
Saint Misbehavin’: The Wavy Gravy Movie opens up in various theaters across America at the start of December. Wavy Gravy is an icon with an ever changing career. He’s gone from the legendary Merry Pranksters to the head of security at the original Woodstock to running a respected charity and finally achieving international greatness as a flavor of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. The many facets of his life are covered in the documentary directed by Michelle Esrick.
We had a chance to sit down for an extensive interview with Wavy Gravy and Michelle Esrick when the movie premiered at 2009’s Full Frame Documentary Film Festival.
This first part has him discuss getting drunk with Jack Kerouac (On the Road) and dropping acid at the Electric Acid Kool-Aid Tests. Ahhh good times.
