Was this a pilot movie? It sure looked like one.

"The Log of the Black Pearl" sure has the look of a pilot for a TV series. First, it was made by Jack Webb's Mark VII, a division of Universal Television. Second, the ending provides no real resolution...at least not in a traditional sense and it leaves you expecting the baddies and the good guys will meet once again. It makes me wonder what such a show would have been like...certainly not like other Webb productions.

The story begins with the captain of an old fashion style sailing ship having a stroke and leaving the ship to his only relative. Chris is a stock broker and plans on selling the boat. However, he meets an old captain (Ralph Bellamy) and they decide to try to find out WHAT sort of treasure the old captain was looking for and they head to Mexico with the Black Pearl.

This was an entertaining film and the only reason I don't give this film a 7 is the way it ended...or, DIDN'T end. It really leaves you hanging.

FYI--The hands hammering out the Mark VII logo at the end of the picture are actually those of Jack Webb himself.

Bienvenidos, Amigos!

Warning: Spoilers
It's kind of fun to see the men running around in Mazatlan with their bell bottom trousers and their 1970s coiffures. But as in most made-for-TV movies, it's carelessly done. All the men are clean shaven by the production companies hair dresser. The men are given complexions suggesting they were embalmed shortly before shooting began. The story is a fairy tale about a brigantine called Black Pearl and a hunt for treasure off the Mexican coast. It's a variation on a theme established by Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island," in which the ship carries some bad guys as well as good.

Five of the performers know how to act: Ralph Bellamy as an archetypal old salt, Pedro Armendariz Jr. as a low-echelon heavy, Jack Kruschen stuck in the wrong role, Henry Wilcoxin who only has half a dozen lines, and Anne Archer who's exquisite no matter the role and no matter that she hasn't yet developed her acting chops. Kiel Martin is the handsome young hero. The team set out to find a hidden stash of Nazi gold on the bottom of the ocean off Puerta Vallart, once a tiny village on the west coast of Mexico with a population of three, not counting goats and pericolos, until John Huston shot "Night of the Iguana" there, after which it became an exclusive resort.

The production radiates TV-movie values, with flat lighting, tinny music, and lines delivered more or less mechanically, although not without some occasional sparkle. When Bellamy helps Krushchen as Jocko don his deep-sea diver suit and lower himself into the water, Kiel turns to Bellamy and remarks, "I've never had a close friend in my life." The plain-spoken old salt frowns and replies, "What brought THAT on?" Martin: "Watching you and Jocko." It's a surprising exchange. It illuminates character without advancing the plot one millimeter. And actually I don't know how anyone can stand being in that rubber suit and metal helmet on board a ship, never mind underwater. I had a spell of panic just wearing a gas mask.

Surprise though. Somebody else got to the gold first and took off with it. And instead of further pursuit of unknown strangers, Kiel Martin shrugs his shoulders. To hell with it. They set sail for Tahiti. It's an odd climax. No violence, no triumphs, Martin doesn't get the gold or the girl, nobody's head gets pulled out of its socket. It took guts to greenlight this movie, which ends without tragedy or triumph.

Really cool movie starring the incomparable and singularly fabulous Anne Archer.

The Log Of The Black Pearl was made in 1975 when I was twelve years old. Even then, I thought that Anne Archer was incomparable and singularly fabulous... Of course she did a DID scene, although it could have been better... I still like her work, and I still like Anne Archer...

A Passable Treasure Hunting Adventure.
meddlecore7 May 2023
The Log Of The Black Pearl is treasure hunting based adventure film, in which the captain of an old windjammer dies, leaving his ship, The Black Pearl- and a secret- to his closest relative.

A young stockbroker, without much seafaring experience.

Though, unbeknownst to him at first, that secret turns out to be an incomplete treasure map, to a horde of German gold, sitting on the sea floor, off the coast of Mexico.

Burdened by the liens his grandfather left behind, the young man, a new captain, and their first mate, set out on one last journey, to try and scavenge the gold...straight William Phipps style.

During the voyage, they take on a few travelers...who turn out to be part of a gang of thugs, who have been seeking to steal the treasure out from under The Black Pearl's nose.

Making this their best oppourtunity to get the deed done.

The hire a beautiful young woman, who acts to honey trap the young man, with hopes she can figure out the mystery, thus allowing them to beat this ragtag crew of aging seamen to the score.

Though, they don't even really know where they are going...just following leads.

These leads eventually lead them to a carnival type festival in Valparaiso...and the final piece of the puzzle, they need to locate the treasure.

However, to do so, they will have to overcome all odds...just to survive...let alone get their first.

This film is by no means a masterpiece, in any conceivable facet.

But it's definitely a competent story, even if the plot could have been developed a little better.

There is muder, mystery, and a slight bit of intrigue to keep you engaged.

But if you aren't a big fan of treasure hunting adventures, you could probably pass this up, and not be missing too much.

Warning: Spoilers
A convoluted mess of an adventure, this silly TV movie deals with the hunt for Nazi treasure where they don't do any hunting. Kiel Martin stars as the heir to his grandfather's ship which is broken into and robbed immediately after he takes over, finding himself in danger, even beating up over the large medallion his grandfather left him as well. Ralph Bellamy takes over as Captain, Jack Kruschen is the crew member and Anne Archer is the young woman who may or may not be in cahoots with the thieves, led by Glenn Corbett.

Some nice location footage with scenes in Mazatlan where a festival is taking place leads to Archer's kidnapping and further adventure. Even with the exotic location footage, there's a cheapness to this production and a silliness to it that had me laughing where laughs were not intended. The ridiculous posing of a portly bodybuilder on parade just seem to be a waste of camera footage, although this Tor Johnson lookalike does have a purpose of being there. Poor Ralph Bellamy looked exhausted running through the streets of Mazatlan to find this man who has a map tattooed on his chest that wasn't visible before. Martin's character of Christopher Sand ain't no Indiana Jones.

Action Adventure show.

I would like to see this movie again, either the original, on tv, or procure the video cassette.(VHS.) I thought it was a good movie, although it could have had some improvements. (Not too, many though, as it was good.) Sorry, I can't remember what they (the requirements.) were... Maybe some body out there will help me... (find the movie, on vhs, that is...) Oh, one more thing... I would like to see this movie remade in Canada by AllianceAtlantis, with Vicky Pratt in the role of Lila Bristol...
