Blumhouse have become synonymous with modern horror, and the production company have built their reputation by churning out low budget movies that do big business at the box office, making them one of the most profitable outfits in the industry. While the vast majority of their efforts tend to be original content, in recent years, head honcho Jason Blum has shown that he’s not above tackling a reboot or two.
After the Dark Universe experiment failed spectacularly, Blumhouse delivered the critical and commercial smash hit The Invisible Man, and are now poised to finally revive Universal’s classic stable of monsters. 2018’s Halloween was also a massive success, while they’ve also tackled Fantasy Island, Black Christmas, The Town That Dreaded Sundown and others to more mixed results.

Exclusive: Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the key creative force behind Warner Bros. TV’s growing Archie comics-based TV universe, has lined up two high-profile new drama series projects, both in the gothic horror genre.
HBO Max has ordered a pilot and an additional script for The Shelley Society, a mash-up of gothic horror and teen romance featuring young Mary Shelley, which Aguirre-Sacasa co-created with Riverdale writers Tessa Leigh Williams and James DeWille.
Additionally, I hear Aguirre-Sacasa has a spec script, The Brides, a reimagining of the Brides of Dracula, about to hit the premium/streaming marketplace. It marks another collaboration with Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Prods., which produces Riverdale, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Katy Keene.
The Shelley Society and The Brides are the first two projects to come out of the new mega overall deal Aguirre-Sacasa signed at Warner Bros. TV in April.

Only Lovers Left Alive (voted by Rick)
Only Lovers Left Alive, the latest film from cult indie director Jim Jarmusch, stars Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton as Adam and Eve, two century old vampires. Adam is an underground musician with a dedicated cult following. In his past time, he drives through the city in his classic Jaguar, collects music memorabilia, photographs, books, vintage musical instruments and old vinyls. He lives in an isolated home in the ruins of Detroit Michigan where he reunites with his enigmatic lover Eve. There, he enlists the help of one of his most dedicated fans (Anton Yelchin) to help collect the analog equipment he needs, and his doctor (Jeffrey Wright) to provide him with a steady supply of his favourite drink, type O-negative. Immortality is weighing on him and thoughts of suicide slowly take over. Not much happens, and not much needs to.

For decades, the vast and beautiful land of Texas has been used as the backdrop for dozens of feature films, spawning beloved classics from virtually every genre. Yet when it comes to horror, it seems that the one title most associated with the state remains Tobe Hooper's masterful The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). A great film which, without question, will live on, Chainsaw was one of the first instances which successfully portrayed the wide-open spaces of Texas as potential landscape of sheer terror.
In the years following the film's impact, a variety of features -- most notably a number of Chain Saw sequels/remakes -- have continued to paint Texas as a rich setting for some truly inventive and fright-filled tales. In time for Halloween, and in celebration of the Texas-set 2014 remake of The Town That Dreaded Sundown (currently in limited release and on VOD), here are a few titles that have,...

Walking into Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s The Town That Dreaded Sundown, I expected a fairly straightforward remake of the Texarkana horror story, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s screenplay inserts us into a world where Charles B. Pierce’s original movie exists, repeatedly referencing the old-school horror flick through spliced-in clip insertions and actual character acknowledgement. It’s an extremely metaphysical movie that twists and turns in the name of horror, yet there’s also a recycled feel to it all that becomes a bit repetitive instead of sneakily ingenious. The 2014 version finds a way to become some hybrid sequel/remake slasher homage that tries to pay respect while traversing its own gory story, but the novelty of comparison becomes rather predictable as “The Phantom” hacks his way through a new batch of victims. It’s a fun and spirited watch, don’t get me wrong,...

The Town That Dreaded Sundown
Written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Earl E. Smith
Directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon
USA, 2014
The Cabin in the Woods was the final frontier for slasher films… or at least it should have been. Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon’s 2011 horror-comedy took all of the subgenre’s tropes and turned them on their head. It acknowledged every character stereotype and rejected each one. The slasher film received a complete deconstruction, and now it may be best to simply pack it away. Sadly, The Town That Dreaded Sundown heralds an uninspired return to form. It just may be the blandest movie to feature violent homicide and ruthless killers.
A remake of the 1976 cult film, The Town That Dreaded Sundown heavily incorporates its predecessor into its story. Set in Texarkana, Texas, the movie takes place several decades after a string of serial murders were committed. Each Halloween the town...

The best way to describe how I approach Fantastic Fest is like summer camp. It happens once a year. You get back together with old friends. Yet in this case, this non-traditional camp is for fans of the most bizarre, violent, horrific, and Fantastic movies you could imagine. And even still, Fantastic Fest is so much more. This will be more third time attending Fantastic Fest and We Are Movie Geeks fourth time covering the crazy events that take place in Austin every September. For eight days I will be immersed in a world that is unlike any other film festival I have ever attended. What other festival is going to feature events like an opening night food fight, a karaoke party, a “nerd rap throwdown,” and the signature event at the festival – Fantastic Debates (which includes a verbal debate followed by a literal boxing match). We've got a trailer for a new film with a great title called The Town that Dreaded Sundown. It's just one of those movie titles that perfectly roll off the tongue. The movie is a remake of a 1976 thriller that was based on a true story about a series of killings that afflicted a small town in the 1940s. The original film actually inspired one of the looks for Jason Voorhees in the Friday the 13th franchise. As a person that enjoys watching horror movies, this looks interesting to me, so I'll be checking it out. Of course, it's going to have some ridiculous moments, like the hotel room scene that you'll see in the trailer, but the ridiculousness is all part of what makes some horror movies fun to watch. Here's the synopsis:

Director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon and producers Jason Blum and Ryan Murphy have brought Charles B. Pierce’s The Town That Dreaded Sundown back after almost 40 years. The town of Texarkana is in for some hell again as the movie is actually a sequel rather than a reboot. The film is set to premiere at Fantastic Fest, Beyond Fest and the London Film Festival before it hits theaters on October 16th 2014.
It’s a great trailer and if you ignore the exposition trails it leads you down, it comes across as pretty fun and thrilling B-movie.
Here’s the synopsis:

Is it a copycat or something even more sinister? A lonely high school girl, with dark secrets of her own,...

The first trailer has been released for the horror movie remake “The Town That Dreaded Sundown” starring Addison Timlin. The remake is set decades after Charles B. Pierce’s 1976 original film. When the Phantom Killer returns to Texarkana and his “Moonlight Murders” begin again the residents are in trouble. When a teenage girl (Timlin) is targeted, she must figure out if the original killer is back or a copycat is responsible for the new murders. “The Town That Dreaded Sundown” is Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s feature directorial debut. Touted as a remake of the 1976 original, the new The Town That Dreaded Sundown, on the evidence of this-just-released trailer, turns out to be a much-belated sequel. The latest opus from Jason Blum's prolific Blumhouse shingle, the director is Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (American Horror Story) and the writer is Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (last year's Carrie). For those of a certain age, the first glimpse of the Orion Pictures logo since 1998 will be almost as exciting as what follows.Charles B. Pierce's original was an unusual '70s slasher in that it was set in the '40s, just after World War II. Based (natch) on a true story, that one was about a killer with a bag over his head picking off the local youth.Gomez-Rejon's new attack picks up the story 66 years later, with the killer re-emerging for some new blood. Is it the same guy as before? Is it a ghost?...

Summer’s winding down, the nights are drawing in and Halloween is the next big holiday. For all you horror fans out there, this means one thing: a cinematic calendar filled with spooky, gory, and altogether frightening flicks to aid your insomnia. “Before that summer, everybody would leave their doors unlocked. And after the summer, you saw a stranger, you’d run the other way. It has been a long time since we've seen the Orion Pictures logo—maybe that says something about our age—but it's the first thing you'll notice in the new trailer for "The Town That Dreaded Sundown." A remake of the cult 1976 movie directed by Charles B. Pierce, this new promo reveals that the do-over has been given a contemporary polish. Starring Addison Timlin, Gary Cole, Joshua Leonard and more, the story kicks off 65 years after the events of the first movie, with another moonlight killer behind a series of grisly slayings. Is the original murderer still at it, is this a copycat or is it something a bit more complicated than all that? Well, you'll just have to wait and see what director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon ("American Horror Story") and writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (the "Carrie" remake) have cooked up. "The Town That Dreaded Sundown," arrives on October 16 and will make...

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, so a big congrats to that team. The final wave of programming for that festival has now arrived, and highlights include the Antonio Banderas-starring sci-fi film “Automata,” Daniel Radcliffe in “Horns," Peter Strickland’s “The Duke Of Burgundy” (which we just gave a big rave out of Tiff), celebrated Cannes horror "It Follows," Sundance indie thriller "The Guest," the remake of "The Town That Dreaded Sundown," the complete director’s cut of Lars Von Trier’s “Nymphomaniac” (both versions in one film that is a total of 5 hours and 24 minutes long) and "My Life Directed By Nicolas Winding Refn," a documentary about the eccentric filmmaker by Liv Corfixen. Plus the festival has added many guests, including Joe Lynch, Liv Corfixen & Nicolas Winding Refn, Edgar Wright, Ti West, Nacho Vigalondo, Alfonso Gomez- Rejon, and David Robert Mitchell....

MGM’s horror meta-remake from producers Jason Blum and Ryan Murphy has dropped its first trailer. Following the events of the low-budget 1976 slasher from Charles B. Pierce, The Town That Dreaded Sundown picks up decades after the Phantom Killer terrorized rural Texarkana when the murders start again and a teenager (Californication‘s Addison Timlin) finds herself in the killer’s sights. Town is helmed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon in his feature directing debut and written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. The film will have its first public screening this month at Austin’s Fantastic Fest before MGM’s Orion Pictures releases it in October. (See the fest lineup here.)...

Blumhouse unveiled the official trailer and one-sheet for The Town That Dreaded Sundown remake. The film is going to play at both Fantastic Fest and Beyond Fest this fall before its release on October 16th.
Based on a terrifying true story, The Town That Dreaded Sundown picks up sixty-five years after a masked serial killer terrorized the small town of Texarkana, when the “moonlight murders” begin again. Is it a copycat or something even more sinister? A lonely high school girl, with dark secrets of her own, may be the key to catching the murderer.

Blumhouse Pictures ("Insidious," "The Purge") is set to launch Bh Tilt, a venture that aims to give multi-platform releases to the smaller films it crafts for Universal Pictures says Deadline.
Blumhouse produces numerous films a year, and quite a few are movies the larger studio doesn't see as having enough mass appeal to justify the expense of a full theatrical release. As a result, this often edgy micro budget indie fare will now instead find a home on VOD platforms.
The new label begins with the "Creep" trilogy by the Duplass Brothers. The most notable inclusions are Joe Carnahan's "Stretch" and the remake of "The Town That Dreaded Sundown" which are both slated to score direct-to-digital releases next month.
Other projects on the Bh Tilt list in the near future include Bryan Bertino's "Mockingbird," the Stephen King adaptation "Mercy" and Joe Johnston's "Not Safe for Work".

The folks living in a small Texas town thought the Phantom Killer behind the Moonlight Murders of 1946 was confined to the silver screen, via the 1976 film based on the real-life slayings, titled The Town That Dreaded Sundown. But a new copycat murderer has emerged in a meta-horror remake, and the film’s first photos show the new threat wearing a wardrobe similar to the original Phantom Killer.
The Town That Dreaded Sundown remake is making its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on October 14th. Here’s the film’s latest synopsis (via BFI London Film Festival):
“Set in a world in which the original film exists and is very much part of popular consciousness, this update sees the quiet streets of Texerkana plagued by a maniac who bears striking resemblance to the same Phantom Killer who wreaked havoc on the town decades before. Is history repeating itself?...

Canadian illustrator Andrew Barr has been - for a bit now - nurturing a blog called "Monstars" which throws the spotlight on various horror films. These capsule reviews are accompanied by character portraits by Barr that are pretty darn neat. I've pulled some of my favorites below - but you can get the full scope of his work via this link. What's great about these is he doesn't limit himself to simply the familiar faces of horror.
Barr will go so far as to whip up drawings of Stanley Coopersmith (Evilspeak) or the Phantom killer from The Town That Dreaded Sundown. Barr was recently selling prints of these character portraits at the FanExpo in Toronto. Need to get my hand on a few of these...

Because of the scrappy, can-do success of Friday the 13th, audiences in cinemas were hit with a deluge of slasher movies, some pretty nifty and others that weren’t so hot. Though in my not so esteemed opinion, even the not so-hot ones had a roughshod, scattershot attitude that elevated them far above the generic knockoffs that this particularly unloved sub-genre would put out on a monthly basis. Some weeks, you’d get Just Before Dawn and others you get Splatter University.
The thing is, because of the profitability of these films, they were in cinemas for one week, made their budgets back and then zoomed out after making a decent killing (pun seriously unintended). They...

The killer from The Town That Dreaded Sundown wasn’t the only movie maniac to wear a sack over his head. Jason Voorhees, widely remembered by his hockey mask, actually donned a canvas sack with one eyehole in Friday the 13th: Part II. It was an in-between time for Jason, as Shelly wouldn’t show up to Crystal Lake with the hockey mask until the next film. The sack made for a very creepy-looking backwoods standalone Jason in Part II, however, and fans of the horror franchise’s first sequel should be happy to learn that Neca will be releasing a “Sack Head” Jason later this year.
As reported by Figures.com, Neca’s latest Jason figure is 8 inches tall and decked out in a plaid shirt and overalls. Never one to be caught without a weapon, this Jason figure comes with a pick axe and pitchfork. Featuring an...

One of my favorite horror events of the year is Drive-In Super Monster-Rama, which takes place every September in Pennsylvania and shows eight classic horror movies over two nights on a huge drive-in screen.
The event has become so popular that a second event was added last year. The “April Ghouls Drive-In Monster-Rama” is back again this weekend and the new line-up is the best yet, with 35mm screenings of Halloween, Carrie, Suspiria, Phantasm, and more:
“On Friday, April 25, the features will be The Town That Dreaded Sundown, Carrie (original), Suspiria and The Hills Have Eyes (original).
On Saturday, April 26, the features will be Halloween (original), The Beast Within, Phantasm and Children Shouldn’T Play With Dead Things.”
For those that have attended the previous events, the pricing and setup is about the same. Admission is $10 per person each night, admission for children is free, and overnight camping is available.

Considering they're the best-known cryptids in history, the humanoids known variously as Sasquatch, Bigfoot, Yeti, the Abominable Snowman and so forth don't get much respect in modern cinema. While thousands of hours of film and video have been dedicated to these elusive man-beasts, there's something about the big dude that makes it nearly impossible for filmmakers to take him seriously, or even tell a semi-competent story about him. It's certainly not for a lack of trying; there have been nearly a hundred Bigfoot and Yeti movies released since the '50s. Old-fashioned giant monster romps, found-footage and slasher entries, feel-good family dramas, romantic comedies... even porno flicks. So why are nearly all of them so damn goofy? Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy these insane interpretations; in fact, the crazier they get, the more I dig 'em. So to honor this dubious cinematic legacy, here are two dozen of...

In case it isn’t obvious, I’m a pretty big fan of the horror genre, and so I wanted to spotlight some of my most anticipated horror films of 2014. Between the big studio releases and the crop of independent features from some of our favourite directors, 2014 looks to be a great year.
