Netflix’s “One Piece” has a colorful, vibrant cast filled newcomers like Iñaki Godoy, who plays as Monkey D. Luffy, and some more seasoned actors like Vincent Regan, who plays Vice Admiral Garp. Netflix put in the work (seven years to be exact) to craft its live adaption of the bestselling manga series.
When “One Piece” creator Eiichiro Oda first saw Godoy, he knew that was his Luffy. Each of the cast members have created their own connection to their characters, and some loved and grew up watching them on screen as children.
Longtime anime fan Emily Rudd, who plays Nami, described her character as a member of the Staw Hats who sevves “like an older sister surrounded by a group of young brothers.” Mackenyu, who is Japanese, grew up idolizing his character Roronoa Zoro. He was so committed to his character that he even pierced his ears for the show,...

Peter Gonzales Falcon, the Texan who starred as a young Federico Fellini in the director’s semi-autobiographical Roma, has died, according to his friend Aurelio Montemayor. He was 75.
Gonzales Falcon got his start with a bit part in Viva Max (1969), a satirical film about a modern-day Mexican general (Peter Ustinov) who retakes the Alamo.
The actor went on to model for a year in London before he landed the role that would make his career.
In 2018, Gonzales Falcon related the story of auditioning for Fellini after being recommended by actor Eugene Walter, a friend of a friend:
I went to Cinecittà where there was a line about a block long with young men wanting to meet Fellini. I went around the line to the main door and buzzed. The door was opened by Liliana [Fellini’s longtime assistant] who looked like a little Edward G. Robinson and even had a cigar in her mouth.

Bill Hader is getting real about gaining weight.
In a July interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor and funnyman revealed that he put on 25 pounds while filming the final season of his hit HBO series, “Barry”.
“To know that I’ve grown as a filmmaker is really rewarding,” Hader said when asked what he’s learned about himself over the course of the show’s four seasons.
Outside of the show, one of the biggest things Hader said he learned, was that he puts on weight much faster than he did at the show’s start.
“But I also know that I’m 45 and I put on weight way faster than I used to. That’s what I really learned, that I’m suddenly 25 pounds overweight,” he quipped. “How the hell’d that happen? I’ve learned I can’t eat sweets the way I used to.”

11 August 2023 – Today, symphonic pop extraordinaire Cody Fry has released his beautifully uplifting single, “What If,” out now via Decca Records US/Universal Music Canada. The moving track appears on the Grammy-nominated artist’s forthcoming album, The End, out September 15.
On “What If,” Cody invites us to look inside his mind as he works to ameliorate his anxious thoughts. We find Cody in a painfully relatable moment where he is envisioning the worst possible outcome for a situation. Throughout the course of the song, Cody begins to shut down his trepidations and adopt a more optimistic approach, proclaiming “Maybe the fear just means I’m alive. Maybe I’ll fall, but what if I fly?” Inspired by his personal experiences with anxiety, Cody explains, “The song begins in a place of anxiety, but it uses this strategy I’ve developed from going to therapy. Anxiety is looking at the worst possible outcome of any given situation.

Films about the end of the world are nothing new. But films about the real end of the world–the moments in human history that seem to have put us on an inevitable path toward our own self-destruction–are less frequent. In the 1950s, as the Cold War took hold and the threat of nuclear war escalated, most of the films that came out dealt with it in terms of metaphor, usually sci-fi ones, like giant irradiated lizards and insects standing in for hydrogen bombs.
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer addresses one of those moments in history head-on, giving us not just a glimpse into the tormented mind of the “father of the atomic bomb,” but a you-are-there, immersive front row seat to the very moment in which the first bomb was detonated and the end of the human race came into clear view, starting with what many now consider to...

This year’s box office hit Evil Dead Rise is being unleashed on 4K and Blu-ray on June 27 – with no special features, we’re bummed to report – but it’s also streaming at home right now.
In addition to being up for grabs on various VOD platforms, Evil Dead Rise also made its debut on the Max – formerly HBO Max – streaming service today, June 23, 2023.
As you may recall, Evil Dead Rise was originally going straight-to-Max, but the pivot to theatrical ended up being a profitable move for Warner Bros. At the worldwide box office, the well-received sequel scared up a whopping $146.3 million worldwide in theaters.
Expect more Evil Dead soon…
Evil Dead Rise is directed by Lee Cronin, starring Lily Sullivan (“I Met a Girl,” TV’s “Barkskins”) and Alyssa Sutherland (TV’s “New Gold Mountain,” TV’s “Vikings).

The eighth and final season of Fear the Walking Dead has been pulling out all the stops to drive home the show’s unique place in the franchise – and everything we’ll miss when it’s gone. Since day one, the series has been about families trying to stay together against all odds, and that heart wrenching theme has progressed into a fast-paced, chaotic, and – don’t forget – terrifying mid-season finale with twists and cliffhangers galore.
“All I See is Red” find one of the primary protagonists, The Walking Dead alum Morgan Jones (Lennie James), reeling from the loss of his beloved, Grace (Karen David), as he tries to reunite with his daughter Mo (Zoey Merchant). Around eight months ago, we heard that the apocalyptic thriller The End We Start From, an adaptation of author Megan Hunter’s 2017 debut novel (you can pick up a copy of Hunter’s novel at This Link), and was filming in London. Now Deadline reports that Paramount’s Republic Pictures label has picked up the North American distribution rights to the film, which stars Jodie Comer of Killing Eve and Free Guy, Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), Mark Strong (1917), Joel Fry (Yesterday), Gina McKee (My Policeman), Nina Sosanya (His Dark Materials), and Katherine Waterston (Alien: Covenant).
There are a couple surprises for me in this announcement. First, I figured that a movie with a cast like that would have secured North American distribution long ago. Second, I didn’t know that Paramount is reviving the Republic Pictures name. Republic was founded in 1935 as its own studio...

In its first acquisition at the Cannes Film Festival, Neon has picked up North American rights to director Pablo Berger’s animated feature “Robot Dreams” ahead of its world premiere in Cannes on Saturday.
The Spanish filmmaker of “Blancanieves” based his first animated feature on the award-winning graphic novel by Sara Varon. “Robot Dreams” screens Saturday in the Special Screenings section of the festival.
Neon previously scored three consecutive Palme d’Or wins with “Parasite,” “Titane” and “Triangle of Sadness.”
“Robot Dreams” is described as a “universal exploration of the importance and fragility of friendship.” It follows Dog, a New York canine who decides to build himself a robot companion. They become inseparable, to the rhythm of 1980s New York city, until the sad summer night when Dog is forced to abandon Robot at the beach.
Berger is also a producer on the film, alongside Ibon Cormenzana, Ignasi Estapé, Sandra Tapia Diaz and Ángel Durández,...

Right from the very beginning, there’s always been a little fairytale DNA in Star Wars delivered a properly fairytale ending — so much so, it might as well have closed on a blue text card of its own: ‘And they all lived happily ever after.’
Probably the biggest surprise of ‘Chapter 24: The Return’ (is it a coincidence that the concluding act of Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey structure is ‘Return’?) was how, well, final the finale felt. Not just as the ending of this latest arc of Din Djarin and Grogu’s tale, but of everything Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau’s show has established so far. If this wasn’t Star Wars – with its ‘no-one’s ever really gone’ continuous narrative drive — you’d be forgiven for thinking that the story was over. Moff Gideon seems to have been vanquished (albeit with much wiggle room should they...

The Beatles‘ Rubber Soul is one of the most beloved classic rock albums of all time. It’s often considered the band’s most extensive foray into folk-rock music. Despite this, some of the great songs on the album aren’t folk songs.

The Beatles gave us a lot of songs about love, including “All You Need Is Love,” “Love Me Do,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “Love You To,” And I Love Her,” “Real Love,” “She Loves You,” and “All My Loving,” just to name a few. “The Word” is another meditation on the subject, but it stands out because of those chic 1960s guitars. Here, The Beatles prove they were just as good at harmonizing as The Beach Boys when they wanted to be. If only this track was a single from The Beatles’ Rubber Soul!

Paul McCartney has a special relationship with "Saturday Night Live." During the show's inaugural 1975-76 season, Lorne Michaels went on camera and made a direct appeal to The Beatles to reunite on his suddenly popular series. To sweeten the deal, he revealed that NBC had cut a certified check for $3,000, which the band could split any way they liked. "If you want to give Ringo less, that's up to you," quipped Michaels. "I'd rather not get involved."
This was, of course, a joke, but McCartney and his bandmate John Lennon had actually reconciled, and were, in fact, watching the episode live in the latter's Dakota apartment. They nearly hopped in a cab and went down to 30 Rockefeller Plaza, but, according to Lennon in 1980, they were "too tired" (those aren't scare quotes ... or maybe they are).

Paul McCartney’s education in Liverpool included a great deal of literature. One author who influenced the young songwriter was William Shakespeare, whose poetry and rhyming style impacted McCartney’s songwriting. For a few Beatles songs, McCartney went back to his Shakespeare education and used the author as an inspiration.

McCartney’s English teacher, Alan Durband, introduced him to several of his literary favorites, including Chaucer and Shakespeare. Long before the Avengers assembled together in the culmination of the greatest phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a multi-billion superhero franchise that has dominated pop culture discourse for decades, the Robert Downey Jr.-starring "Iron Man" kickstarted the studio's shared universe of films in 2008. Downey Jr. was initially perceived as a controversial choice for "Iron Man" — but the actor's past legal troubles didn't negatively influence director Jon Favreau, who fought tooth and nail to make it happen.
The film was released, Downey Jr.'s performance was commended, to say the least, and a franchise was born. The actor reprised his role in two sequels and has played Tony Stark/Iron Man in a total of 10 films while steadily being at the center of the MCU throughout. “I wouldn’t say no,” he teased when asked by Et’s Sangita Patel.
While he doesn’t consider them accolades similar to an Academy Award, he still found them fun.
“Listen, I think those are all kind of fun things, but they’re not to me actual accolades. They’re just kind of like, ‘oh there’s a thing’, you know,” he explained. “Yeah. I mean, again, I would never say no. I mean, I would be honoured.

There are many songs that Paul McCartney based on things he read in literature. His parents instilled a love of knowledge and learning in him when he was a kid, and his English teacher at school fostered that love. Paul developed an admiration for writers like Lewis Carroll and Shakespeare. However, many authors and writers’ work ended up in Paul’s songs.

In The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, Paul spoke many times about his literary heroes, which included Dylan Thomas, Oscar Wilde, Allen Ginsberg, French symbolist writer Alfred Jarry, Eugene O’Neill, and Henrik Ibsen. However, a couple of his songs wouldn’t have shaped up the same way without the influence of Shakespeare.
Paul wrote that he’s “fascinated by the couplet as a form in poetry,” particularly how Shakespeare used the couplet to close out a scene or an entire play.

Ken Bruce uttered his final words on Radio 2 as he left his BBC show after 31 years.
On Friday (3 March), the DJ, who is 72, presented his last ever mid-morning programme for the corporation, where he has been employed for 45 years.
He urged his listened to simply “enjoy” the show as well as his song choices, saying there were no “hidden agendas” in his selections.
This was seemingly a nod to the reports that claimed that he was axed early by the BBC in efforts to prevent him from promoting his new show on Greatest Hits Radio.
After a show that saw emotional send-offs from long-time listeners and his fellow broadcasters, including Jeremy Vine, Bruce then had the tough task of signing off his last ever show.
Find updates from Bruce’s final ever Radio 2 show here.
He told his listeners: “Thanks to all who’ve sent any kind of message of congratulations or good riddance.

All of The Beatles‘ eras were integral to their success and popularity, but some periods were better than others. Here is a ranking of all the group’s phases.

5 of the Scariest Beatles Songs
13. The Silver Beetles (May-August 1960)
May through August 1960 was the toughest of The Beatles’ eras. In The Beatles Anthology, George Harrison explained that they came back broke and haggard. It wasn’t terrific.

The backlash to the "Lost" finale wasn't quite as heavy or as universal as what "Game of Thrones" would provoke nine years later, but it was enough to ruin the show's reputation for a long time. After "The End" was released in May 2010, the narrative around "Lost" now seemed firmly set in stone: this was that show where the writers just made stuff up as they went along, where they kept promising pay-offs that could never be delivered. Throughout the 2010s, if a TV critic wanted to speculate that a show was becoming too aimless, too dragged out, they'd often phrase the question as, "Is this show turning into the new 'Lost'?" The claim that the finale was a massive disappointment was something that didn't even need to be backed up in most circles; it was just accepted as common sense.

Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18 and an Irish song tradition inspired Paul McCartney on The Beatles‘ “I Saw Her Standing There.” Paul used many of his literary and musical favorites in his songs.
The Beatles, who released ‘I Saw Her Standing There’ in 1963 | Mark and Colleen Hayward/Getty Images Paul McCartney said ‘I Saw Her Standing There’ had rough beginnings
In The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, Paul wrote that he loves The Beatles’ “I Saw Her Standing” and considers it one of the best songs he’s ever written. However, it had challenging beginnings. Paul played the song for John Lennon as they smoked tea in Paul’s father’s pipe.
There was an issue with one of the lyrics. Paul wrote, “I said, ‘She was just seventeen. She’d never been a beauty queen.’ And John said, ‘I’m not sure about that.’ So our main task was to get rid of the beauty queen.

George MacKay is virtually unrecognizable in the erotic revenge thriller “Femme,” directed by Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping. With slicked-back hair and a heavy-handed neck tattoo, the dashing, soft-spoken British actor, well known for his period roles, is transformed into the kind of East London gangster you’d go out of your way to avoid.
Part of what makes MacKay’s character, Preston, so menacing is the fact that he’s deeply closeted. When one night he’s teased in front of his friends by Nathan Stewart-Jarrett’s drag artist Jules — dressed up as Aphrodite Banks — he responds with violence so severe that it shatters Jules’ confidence to ever perform in drag again. The attack emboldens Jules to ensnare an unwitting Preston in an intense sexual relationship with the intention of outing him on the Internet.
It’s not only Jules’ character who trades in drag, explains MacKay.

With hindsight, we know Ringo Starr was a crucial piece of the puzzle for The Beatles. Yet he sometimes lost sight of that fact. When Ringo complained about being the fourth wheel, the other Beatles gave him a bigger role on Rubber Soul. Never mind that his steady timekeeping and versatility helped the Fab Four win scores of fans around the world. Ringo praised his drumming as the centerpiece of the song “Get Back,” and he was right on the nose with it. Maybe that complaining and more prominent role on Rubber Soul and later albums paid off.

Some of The Beatles‘ songs are among the best rock tunes of all time. Despite this, they released some garbage here and there. Notably, their final No. 1 single was tripe.
The Beatles | Getty Images 5. ‘The Long and Winding Road’
“The Long and Winding Road” and “For You Blue” were released as a double A-side single. According to The Billboard Book of Number 1 Hits, those songs were the band’s final No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100.
“The Long and Winding Road” was a terrible ending to the Fab Four’s saga. After innovating for years, the band left us with a sappy easy-listening ballad that could easily have been written by Barry Manilow or Michael Bolton. The track was also a bridge between Paul’s work with The Beatles and Wings’ worst tendencies. There’s a reason why “Yesterday” and “Something” remain standards while “The Long and Winding Road” was mostly left in the dust.

Ringo Starr’s Beatles bandmates often overshadowed the drummer. The timekeeper born as Richard Starkey shined on several occasions, but John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison took the spotlight much of the time. Ringo got it wrong when he said young drummers would never get anywhere listening to his playing. But he always got it right with his Fab Four beats. Ringo also got it right when he praised his drumming on The Beatles’ song “Get Back” while giving John Lennon’s guitar playing a backhanded compliment.

Paul pushed (and pushed and pushed) for a cohesive return to the band’s roots.

Add Showtime to the list of outlets who are pulling content from their streaming platforms.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the Paramount Global-backed cabler has pulled a number of short-lived, under-performing shows from its streaming platform. The list includes American Gigolo and Let the Right One In — both of which were canceled earlier Monday — as well as Jim Carrey vehicle Kidding, the first season of anthology Super Pumped, On Becoming a God in Central Florida and American Rust. Also vanishing from the Showtime streaming platform are seasons of acquired content including The End and Wakefield. Additional shows are likely included in the mass removal.
Reps for Showtime did not immediately respond to THR’s request for comment.
The news comes hours after Showtime parent Paramount Global announced that the linear premium cable network and the premium version of Paramount+ would both be rebranded later this year as Paramount+ on Showtime.

Well, here we are. At the end of the endless sea of sand. “Moon Knight” has reached its season finale (more on that in a minute) and it went out in style, with a lot of calamitous spectacles and a smattering of fun character moments. The Marvel Studios shows on Disney+ have had an awkward relationship with their finales, sometimes erring on too showy (“WandaVision”) or too talky (“Loki”).
With “Moon Knight” (like “Hawkeye” before it), they seemed to find the right balance, with Marc Spector/Steven Grant (Oscar Isaac) attempting to return from the afterlife to thwart Arthur Harrow’s (Ethan Hawke) insidious plot and also come to terms with unruly tangle of his own psychology. “Moon Knight” is nothing if not an extended, hieroglyphics-etched metaphor for owning your shit. And the finale owned.
Let’s get into it, shall we?
Major spoilers follow for episode 6 of “Moon Knight.

Brian Walsh.
For Brian Walsh, 2020 shapes as the most competitive year for the broadcast and streaming sector since the inception of television in Australia in 1956.
There will be casualties among the new entrants but ultimately the viewers will be the winners, predicts Walsh, Foxtel’s executive director of TV, one of the few who were there when the pay TV company launched in 1995.
“The landscape will be the most competitive since the start of television as we see the new players consolidate their positions for consumers in Australia,” he says. “Like all competition, it will bring out the best in everyone. When you have robust competition the winner will be the customer.”
While he expects Disney+ to draw a sizable audience here, particularly among young families, he predicts: “There won’t be an endless array of Ott services that will have the same success as Netflix, Disney and Amazon. There...

Zenia Starr in ‘The End’ (Photo credit: Foxtel).
Zenia Starr made her screen debut in Mark Grentell’s 2013 cricket comedy Backyard Ashes but this year has been the first when she has worked virtually non-stop.
The Indian-born, Australian-raised actor modestly credits that to a number of factors including audiences’ growing appetite to see diversity on screens and those producers and directors who were willing to take a risk in hiring her.
Equally graciously she also thanks her agent, Catherine Poulton Management, luck and “maybe some divine intervention.”
