Erotica (1979)
trimbolicelia8 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A Mexican-made, Spanish-language, late 70's scenic melodrama. A pair of thieves dynamite and rob a safe at a facility by the docks. One is shot, injured, caught and imprisoned in a charming prison where the prisoners are regularly beaten to death by the guards for any infraction. The other one escapes with the help of his wife and/or girlfriend, I'm never sure which. They end up living in an open air shack by the beach. They make a living diving for sponges which the woman sells at a nearby village. They make enough for eats, smokes, and cosmetics for the woman. Eventually the partner escapes from jail, hooks up with his partner and trouble ensues with two men and one woman. The girl is too much woman for any man, but not woman enough for two men. Now for openers the woman's name in the film is Erotica. What was anyone thinking. The girl goes to the village in a floor-length skirt with a wide slit cut up to her waist and a see-through, barely there top. The two men are muscled studs but neither one is worth having since they are dumb thieves and the girl is not much better, opting for an on the edge existence. No mention is made of the stolen money. The best thing about the film is the scenery. The village, though poor, is surrounded magnificently by trees. The shack, though it looks as if the next big wind will take it down, is perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean with a beautiful beach. Don't know where it was filmed but the area is incomparable. Lousy movie with beautiful leads and even more beautiful scenery.

TereCastelloMagallanes26 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A love triangle between a beautiful girl and two best friends who rob a bank. Nothing can go well in the end. Jorge and Jaime, best friends, decide to rob a bank together. Jaime wants to impress the beautiful Erotica and marry her and Jorge is happy to help his best friend. Things go wrong and Jorge is shot and later taken to prison while Jaime runs off with Erotica. The two love birds settle down in the shores of a beautiful beach, living their lives far away from town selling sponges that Jaime recovers from the sea. Erotica goes to town alone to sell, aware that she is a woman who attracts men for her attributes and sensuality, each time she goes, she catches the eye of many villagers. In one of her journeys to town, she sees Jorge, who managed to escape prison. Erotica, afraid Jorge will ruin her honeymoon runs to Jaime and tells him. Jaime, a violent man filled with fury hits her, claiming Jorge is his friends and that he will help him, ignoring her plea. Jaime is unaware that his decision and violent attitude towards Erotica will make her fall for his best friend instead. Not the best love triangle movie out there but it was entertaining to watch.

Erótica's Blues
EdgarST7 July 2011
It is a sad sight to watch this unnecessary remake of Emilio Fernández' own 1953 minor classic "La red", which was awarded at the Cannes film festival for its visual narration. Fernández had become too concerned with sex by the Seventies, and from "La choca" (1974) to his last motion pictures he filmed stories that –perceived through a traditional filter more appropriate for his rural classics of the 1940s, as "Flor silvestre" and "Pueblerina"– seemed moralistic and outdated. He even forced credibility to the limit: the loot of the initial robbery is gone by the first reel, apparently spent on an art director's beach hut, and make-up for Erótica (Rebeca Silva), so she and her husband (Jaime Moreno) have to sell sponges to survive. Erótica walks into town with her breasts hardly covered, people go on as usual with their businesses; everybody knows they are fugitives, but they protect them, including the French owner of a bar. When the third party of the love triangle that forms the basis of the story arrives in town, he and Erótica meet at the local church, where she usually goes wearing her airy "blouse", and the local priest has identified her as a "mysterious woman". Not much goes on until Fernández himself arrives as Fernández to bring some order into town. Though attractive in her own terms, Silva is far from the beautiful Italian actress Rossana Podestà (who was not called Erótica in the original film, but Rossana, apparently a part written for her). In a reversal of roles, the older guy (who in the first version was the "husband"), as played by Rivero past his prime, is now the disruptive force in the love triangle; while Moreno, a weak player, is definitely not a rival to Rivero. Both hunks are full of muscles, but none evokes the disrupting sensuality that Armando Silvestre projected in the original. Watch "La red" instead and avoid this potboiler.
