Before video games truly advanced, the arcade was where it was at. Much like Saturday morning cartoons, it’s one of those obsolete ideas from the past where you get why it’s gone, but damn if it didn’t represent some wonderful times. Arcade games seemed like the zenith of what a video game could look and feel like. Consoles were great and all, but you knew that if you were getting a port of an arcade classic for your 8-bit or 16-bit system, you weren’t getting the full package.
One of the genres that truly felt like the soul of the arcade experience was the beat ‘em up. The idea that you, a couple of friends, or even some complete strangers could join together at a cabinet and go on a trek to beat up as many enemy thugs as possible until you either ran out of quarters and couldn’t continue,...

[Editor’s note: Spoilers for “Monkey Man” below.]
Move over John Wick, there’s a new martial arts action hero: Dev Patel’s titular underdog in his directorial debut, “Monkey Man.” Inspired by the ancient legend of the Hindu deity Hanuman, the invincible Monkey God, Patel creates his own mythic avenging angel in the tradition of such Korean action films as “Oldboy” and “Man From Nowhere.” Lowly yet scrappy and full of rage, Patel’s Kid is determined to take down the sinister elite of the fictional Yatana, Mumbai’s version of Gotham, and kill the corrupt cop, Rana (Sikandar Kher), who brutally murdered his mother and scarred him for life.
Patel (a martial arts competitor and teacher in London in the early 2000s with a passion for the film genre), trained rigorously with fight coordinator Brahim Chab (“The Foreigner”) and performed all the fights himself. Although he embraced Chab’s intricate choreography, he also...

After a snowy Wednesday in Park City dampered some of the arrival fanfare of previous festivals, Sundance soaked up the sun on Thursday’s opening day. With plenty of powder to lend an idyllic backdrop to selfies and social media updates, the festival crowd was buzzing in line for the day’s largest film opening: “Freaky Tales,” taking the coveted early evening spot at the Eccles Center. Dozens of stand-by hopefuls were left in the cold for the popular event though, which kicked off the festival with a riotous screening.
The film marks a Sundance homecoming for director Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, whose breakout hit was the 2006 Sundance favorite “Half Nelson”; the pair most recently helmed the decidedly not indie 2019 superhero flick “Captain Marvel.” “Freaky Tales” is a return to their scrappy roots: An anthology horror-thriller-comedy that pays tribute to ’80s Oakland, the film stars Pedro Pascal, Jay Ellis,...

Bruce Lee was a famed martial arts expert who completed only a handful of films before his untimely death in 1973 at the age of 32. Let’s take a look back at all 6 of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in the Chinatown neighborhood of San Francisco, CA, in 1940, Lee was raised with his family in Kowloon, Hong Kong. He began appearing in several films as a child, often in small bit roles, but abandoned acting to pursue a career in martial arts.
His hiatus from the screen didn’t last long. In 1966, Lee was cast as Kato in the short-lived television adventure “The Green Hornet,” later making appearances as the character on “Batman.” He played a small role in the mystery film “Marlowe” (1969) as a kung fu fighter who destroys private eye James Garner‘s office before suffering a tragic demise.

The poster design of John Carpenter's 1978 slasher "Halloween" is scary, subtle, and quite brilliant. The poster was painted by artist Bob Gleason who once said in an interview with Fangoria Magazine that he came up with the design while working for the Santa Monica-based graphic design firm B.D. Fox and Friends. Gleason noticed that the grooves that circumvent a pumpkin could be shadowed in a jagged, knife-like shape, and that he could use that image in conjunction with an actual knife. The poster features the hand of Michael Myers holding a large curved kitchen knife, melting into a repeated pattern that forms the face of a jack o' lantern.
Gleason's managers weren't too fond of his idea, feeling that Michael Myers' white-faced mask should be placed front-and-center, not the knife. A few days later, however, Gleason's managers came around and let him do the poster he wanted. It took him three or four days.

It is an understatement to say that Bruce Lee left a massive impact through his short filmography. After being denied a lead role by the Shaw Brothers studio, Lee signed onto an upstart company called Golden Harvest whose subsequent films made him into an international star. As his tragic death came on the cusp of kung-fu movies being introduced to the global market, a question lingered about who would replace Lee.
Director David Gregory has crafted a comprehensive exploration of what followed Lee’s passing; a sub-genre named Bruceploitation which focused on casting Bruce Lee lookalikes to star in imitation martial arts films. The resulting cash-in features were made to exploit the deceased star’s international popularity during a time when intellectual property laws were less strict, with even Golden Harvest joining in with Game of Death, an unfinished feature from Lee that was stitched together for a release with a body double,...

It's no secret that George Lucas' original vision for "Star Wars" was heavily influenced by Japanese cinema, specifically the samurai, or chanbara, sword-fighting films of his youth. "Seven Samurai" and, of course, Akira Kurosawa's "Hidden Fortress" were direct inspirations for "A New Hope" and the misadventures of C-3Po and R2-D2. Any student who has studied martial arts will also be able to see a direct link between the ancient techniques of Japanese swordsmanship and the fighting style of Jedi Knights throughout the entire saga. Beginning with the classic duel between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader aboard the Death Star, the original film's stunt coordinator Peter Diamond incorporated the basic strikes, parries, and blocks that are taught in kendo. Even the concept of balancing one's internal Qi ("chi") energy became the foundation for the Force.

Dear readers, before I can move forward with my review of We Are Zombies, it’s only right that I inform you that I will be very biased in my assessment of this movie. First off, I’m a big fan of the works from filmmaking trio Rkss, and their debut feature Turbo Kid is one of my all-time favorites. Secondly, I went to college with some of the cast (though I won’t reveal who) and have seen them grow from background to principal characters. Finally, the film was shot around my home city of Montreal and I can pinpoint exactly where many scenes took place.
But I am not alone in my love for both Rkss and We Are Zombies. Its world premiere was chosen to be the closing film for this year’s Fantasia Film Festival. Before it even screened to a sold-out room, there was a...

The greatest tragedy of Bruce Lee’s all too short life was that he didn’t live to see the premiere of Enter the Dragon. Lee died on July 20, 1973. Enter the Dragon was released six days later.
Four years prior, Lee made a vow to himself that he titled “My Definite Chief Aim.” Handwritten in cursive with his characteristic flair, he wrote “I, Bruce Lee, will be the first highest paid Oriental super star in the United States. I will give the most exciting performances and render the best of quality in the capacity of an actor.” Throughout his career in Hollywood, Lee struggled to make his way, fighting against prejudice and exclusion at every step, in hopes of reaching his goal. And yet he never lived to see the breakthrough success of his masterpiece.

Long-lost unseen footage of the celebrated “log fight” scene from the Bruce Lee film Game of Death is to be released in a new box set marking the 50th anniversary of the famed actor and martial artist’s death.
Lee, who shot to fame around the world with the 1973 film Enter the Dragon, died on 20 July 1973 before he could complete shooting on Game of Death, which eventually emerged in 1978, incorporating some of the original footage in a largely reshot and rewritten version.

Andrew Davis’ Under Siege is usually considered Steven Seagal’s best movie. However, at the time, most critics singled out Tommy Lee Jones’s performance as the baddie, Strannix, as a scene-stealer. According to Nick de Semlyen’s new book, “Last Action Heroes”, Jones dominating the film was intentional, as Seagal was somewhat reluctant to sign onto the movie. To help entice the star, his screen time was kept to only about 41 minutes. As Davis tells de Semlyen, “Between the Pentagon stuff and all the other cutaways, Tommy is actually in the movie more than Steven.”
According to Davis, Jones took the lead in reworking his bad guy, who he remembers was “flat” and “boring” in the original script. “Tommy said, ‘Why can’t I be a rock n’roll kinda guy? It was a little weird, but Tommy made it work.” Indeed, Jones’s performance would elevate his career,...

Blackie Onassis, drummer for the alt-rock act Urge Overkill during their ’90s heyday, has died. A spokesperson for the band reported his passing to the Los Angeles Times, but no cause of death was given.
Onassis (real name John Rowan) joined Urge Overkill in 1991, playing alongside founding members Nash Kato and Eddie “King” Roeser. He appeared on their albums The Supersonic Storybook (1991), Saturation (1993), and Exit the Dragon (1995).
While the Chicago-based band impacted alternative-rock radio with such songs as “Sister Havana” and “Positive Bleeding,” they are perhaps best known for their cover of Neil Diamond’s “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon,” which famously appeared in the Quentin Tarantino film Pulp Fiction. They also got major exposure when they opened for Nirvana on the latter’s tour in support of Nevermind.

A singularly wacky moment in film history is poked in “Enter the Clones of Bruce.” It surveys the years immediately following Bruce Lee’s untimely 1973 death, when the sudden international thirst for martial arts movies that he’d awoken could seemingly only be slaked by the man himself — or by a host of imitators who popped up under lookalike pseudonyms.
David Gregory’s documentary won’t convince most viewers that the resulting flood of opportunistic cheapies are worth more extensive investigation. But they’re certainly cheesy fun in excerpt, and interviews with surviving participants provide an entertaining window into an anything-goes heyday for Hong Kong cinema. With the new Fast X trailer showcasing scenes starring Paul Walker and the 7th entry in the series having been finished after his untimely passing, fans are reminded of how some films needed to be finished even though the star passed on. While Furious 7 did so with taste and tact, some pushed the envelope maybe a bit too far. Here are some of the good ones, and some of the (very) bad ones.
Game of Death (1978)
Possibly the first title that comes to mind for film aficionados when the subject of films finished after their stars passed comes up is Robert Clouse’s Game of Death. Bruce Lee passed away on July 20th, 1973, and Game of Death was finished in 1978. That is quite the gap, and this may be explained by multiple reasons of course, including the fact that a decision needed to be taken on how to proceed...

Action cinema back in the golden era of Hong Kong cinema was encapsulated with an anything goes ethos. You would get almost guerilla style film-making techniques with a complete aversion to safety and what you subsequently got on screen was the result. “Devil Hunters” concludes with one such stunt that will leave the mind boggling at how nobody got sued! It’s also a classic example of B-movie filmmaking with it fitting comfortably into the female fighting flicks that followed the success of Michelle Yeoh and “Yes Madam”. With a lot of these poorly put togethe,r will this stand out from the crowd or just be remembered for the finale?

One of the world's greatest martial artists is no longer with us. Bob Wall, best known as the trainer for martial arts legend Bruce Lee, passed away on Sunday at the age of 82. In addition to training Lee, Wall opposed the martial arts legend in classic kung fu films including "Enter The Dragon" and "Game of Death," mostly serving as a major foe for Lee's protagonist.
In a statement released to the Hollywood Reporter, his family spoke about how much Wall meant to them and emphasized how important his legacy was. "He was a pillar of strength and inspiration to all who encountered...

Martial arts expert and stuntman Bob Wall, best known for playing henchman O’Hara opposite Bruce Lee in the 1973 martial arts classic “Enter the Dragon,” has died. Wall was 82.
Wall died on Sunday in Los Angeles, according to a statement issued by Wall’s family to The Hollywood Reporter. The cause of death was not revealed.
“He was a pillar of strength and inspiration to all who encountered him, and his radiant spirit and legacy will never be forgotten,” the statement said. “He was a brilliant martial artist, a never-ending source of jokes, a gifted speaker and a passionate man whose unconditional love and support were unmatched.”
Along with “Enter the Dragon,” Hall starred in two other Bruce Lee Films, “The Way of the Dragon” (1972) and “Game of Death” (1978).

Writer and director Dustin Ferguson (Zombi VIII: Urban Decay) is an incredibly prolific filmmaker with 110 directorial credits (so far) on IMDb, churning out dozens of films in a year be it under his name or his “Dark Infinity” moniker – which is the name under which he directed The Beast Beneath. This film also features a couple of now-regular performers that Ferguson works with: scream queen Brinke Stevens and Game of Death‘s Mel Novak.
The Beast Beneath sees an earthquake some 20 miles from San Diego awaken a prehistoric beast that starts to feed on the locals, with only the Sheriff ((D.T. Carney), scientist Charlene Brinkeman (Brinke Stevens) and her brother Aaron (Eric Prochnau) willing to stop it. Meanwhile,...

Chicago – The legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is 74 years young on April 16th, 2021, and the athlete/activist is more in demand than ever. With a commitment to social justice his entire basketball career, his achievements in that pursuit shine as bright as his record-breaking days on the b-ball court. Photographer Joe Arce publishes an Exclusive Photo of Jabbar from 2016, when he appeared at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, through Anderson’s Bookshop.
Born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor in New York City, and topping out at 7-ft-2-in., Jabbar began dominating the roundball scene early with three straight high school championships in the 1960s. At UCLA, he helped Coach John Wooden win three straight NCAA championships from 1967-69. He began his commitment to social justice during his college years, boycotting the 1968 Olympic team due to the treatment of blacks, converted to Islam during the same period and changed his named to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

As I once again enter the world of “Bruceploitation”, I ponder the controversial question. How many of Bruce Lee’s movies were actually good in the classical sense? Take away his presence and incredible fight sequences and often we are left with fairly average productions. Even his most famous role is in to be fair an exploitation movie. Even “Enter the Dragon” is to all intents and purposes an exploitation feature. Now I do not write this to be derogatory to one of cinema’s legendary figures, it’s just to try and be fair to the films that followed in his passing. The world of “Bruceploitation” gets a bad press normally and often with good reason. Yet take Bruce Lee out of his own work and the filmmaking looks fairly similar to these more exploitative features.

Sammo Hung possesses a little cinematic party trick. Every now and again, he throws in his Bruce Lee impression. Appearing in “Enter the Dragon” and “Game of Death” saw him in both the legitimate and exploitation sides of the little master canon. With “Enter the Fat Dragon”, we get a whole vehicle based on it. Not to be confused with the Donnie Yen version, this is very much in Bruceploitation territory.

When Bruce Lee died in July 1973, he left behind a true legacy, having changed the way people perceive martial arts and Asian people in movies in general. Lee also had a very specific understanding of what he wanted to achieve as an artist, which was not only to entertain, but also to teach his audience about martial arts, its variety and expressions. Through projects like the unfinished “Game of Death”, that he had planned to finish after the shooting of “Enter the Dragon”, he tried to follow this path, but after his death, the project was left as a fragment, until Robert Clouse, director of “Enter the Dragon”, was given the task to finish it using the recorded as well as archival footage taken from Lee’s other features. The result is quite different to the story Lee had in mind, as it only uses a small percentage of the footage Lee shot,...

Is this the end of Warrior? It certainly seems that way as far as Cinemax is concerned. It’s a shame because the Bruce Lee inspired martial arts series continued to pick up steam throughout its second season.
Like with any period fantasy, the first season of Warrior was devoted to quite a lot of world building. The cast was diverse, but somewhat stereotyped. The Chinese were all Kung Fu gangsters, prostitutes, or coolies. The Irish were drunkards or corrupt cops.
But Season 2 solidified the world of Warrior, the characters were able to deepen and grow. The drama and the action leveled up significantly. And the historical references and political commentary were spot on. And it ended on quite a cliffhanger.
One can only imagine where Warrior Season 3 might go. But it unfortunately appears to have become a victim of network politics. Perhaps the launch of HBO Max, and Warrior’s eventual arrival there,...

The land of the Kung Fu movie can be a treacherous one for the uninitiated. A myriad of titles can often be found to be the same picture, and quality levels vary wildly despite the same casts. Indeed reviewing them can be equally haphazard as how to deconstruct something that has no pretext on being “good”. That’s before we even begin to discuss Bruceploitation. After the legendary Bruce Lee died, scores of imitations found their way to cinemas and latterly video. This subgenre starts in bad taste and proceeds to nose dive from there. Even the official “Game of Death” is really an exploitation movie, completed several years later, with an adherence to continuity that even Ed Wood would have deemed incompetent. However as a lover of the old school Kung Fu and with the mists of time passed, it’s time to don the yellow tracksuit and check...
