On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Let Me Own This Blu-Ray Before I’m Buried in My Official Kiss-Branded Coffin
Few musical acts in American history have done more with less than Kiss. Despite boasting some of the simplest and most uninspired (if occasionally very catchy) songs of the 1970s, the shock rock act built a loyal following and merchandising empire around the novel idea of wearing makeup while singing. Their onstage theatrics and commitment to rock and rolling all night and partying every day — tons of people can do one or the other, but...

In 1984, a lot of laws about what was and wasn't allowed in children's TV programming began to loosen. Throughout the decade, more and more companies became incredibly brazen about including advertising content directly into their TV shows, transforming many shows into 30-minute commercials for toys. An '80s child would watch a show, knowing they could soon hound their parents to buy them the toy counterparts of their favorite characters. This branding became deeply insidious, and many children of the 1980s grew up with a deep and abiding nostalgia for their favorite toy ads. Artistry, character, writing, storytelling, and mythology were all distant, tertiary concerns during this era, and the bulk of animated shows from the '80s are deeply, deeply terrible as a result.

Don’t be fooled: the Foo Fighters’ “Studio 666” is not some extended music video gimmick put out by Dave Grohl and company. It’s a real horror movie with a legit runtime, a plot and a script. And though they’re amazed the movie actually got finished and exists, Grohl isn’t fooling himself that they’re suddenly real actors either.
“First of all, it wasn’t that much of a stretch to be the Foo Fighters. You throw us backstage in a room, and we are a comedy troupe everywhere we go, that’s just what happens, for the last quarter of a century,” Grohl told TheWrap in an interview, the second part of which will be published Thursday. “And nobody is going for an Oscar here, by the way. It’s very much like, ‘Hey let’s get f—ed up.’ It was nice to be relieved...

Dave Grohl got in touch with his demonic side for “March of the Insane,” a thrashy new death-metal song attributed to the fictional band Dream Widow. The track, which surfaced on Foo Fighters’ YouTube page, claims to come “from their never released self-titled album.” Although the exact musicians who play in “Dream Widow” are unknown, it’s safe to assume Grohl had a hand in the track given his collaborations with members of Celtic Frost, Mercyful Fate, Motörhead, and Venom years ago on his Probot project.

Dave Grohl hasn’t sat still for more than 30 years, so it’s not much of a surprise that he’s ended up creating and starring in his own feature film.
As Pat Smear, one of the founders of L.A. punk legends The Germs, touring guitarist in Nirvana and a cornerstone of Grohl’s Foo Fighters, told him, “Drummers are like sharks, if they stop moving, they’ll die.”
In Studio 666, a horror comedy in the vein of The Evil Dead, perpetual movement doesn’t necessarily prevent death either. (Watch the trailer below.)
Grohl, who came up with the idea of the Open Road Films-distributed film that debuts theatrically on February 25, is a fascinating creature.

Foo Fighters record an album in a haunted mansion in the trailer for the band’s horror-comedy film “Studio 666,” premiering in theaters on Feb. 25.
As the band writes and records new music, frontman Dave Grohl finds himself possessed by supernatural forces that threaten the completion of the album and the lives of the band.
The movie stars Foo Fighters members Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett and Rami Jaffee, alongside Whitney Cummings, Will Forte, Jenna Ortega, Leslie Grossman and Jeff Garlin, with a cameo from Lionel Richie.
“This is not just a creepy rock ‘n’ roll house,” warns Cummings in the trailer. “It allows spiritual entities to cross into our world.”
Among the supernatural forces plaguing the band are a demonic possession, undead spirits and… amnesia, apparently.

Exclusive: Think A Hard Day’s Night of the Living Dead, with laughs among the scares and splatter, and you’ve got a handle on Studio 666. Dave Grohl and his Foo Fighters bandmates star in a film they shot in secret, about what happens when the legendary rock band rents an Encino mansion steeped in grisly rock and roll history, to record their 10th album. Trouble is, frontman Grohl is creatively blocked, and when evil forces in the house sink into his consciousness, the creative juices begin flowing but so does the blood. Can Foo Fighters’ complete the album, with the band still alive to tour?

TV horror lives and dies by the pen. From the ‘50s to the ‘90s, network TV shows and movies simply couldn’t carry the weight of special effects, and the content restrictions placed on TV (before the advent of cable, I’m talking the Big Three – ABC, CBS, NBC) back in the day did not allow for the most part a visceral experience. (Oh how times have changed.) So often the tale itself would have to suffice, and if it was gripping enough, blood speckled walls and torn limbs weren’t even necessary. Case in point: The Strange Possession of Mrs. Oliver (1977), an NBC Monday Night at the Movies written by none other than Richard Matheson, starring Karen Black.
Premiering Monday, February 28th, 1977, Strange’s beat down would come at the hands of ABC’s Monday Night Movie (I just love the creative monikers), which regularly trounced any and all comers in that time slot.

The 1970s New York music scene produced more than disco movies, they also brought us rock and roll comic book heroes.
The first concert I ever saw was Kiss during their Destroyer tour. My parents had seen some clips of them on the TV and were scared to death. The makeup, the costumes, the pyrotechnics, all the fire-breathing and blood-spitting had them convinced that Kiss was the most wicked, demonic band on Earth (second only to Alice Cooper), and that if I went to the show I’d undoubtedly become addicted to heroin, possessed by the devil, or at the very least be kidnapped. I didn’t bring up the rumor that Kiss was actually an acronym for Knights in Satan’s Service, nor that the possibility of demonic corruption was exactly why I wanted to see the show.
Well, I went and wasn’t sold into slavery.

Pop quiz – what is Terry Gilliam’s earliest credited work on a feature film? If you guessed anything “Monty Python” related, you’re actually a tad off. A year before “Monty Python’s Fliegender Zirkus,” and five years before “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” the actor/writer/director/everything man proved just how much of a film factotum he really is. Though he’d been working in TV since the late '60s, Gilliam’s first feature credit came in 1970 in the form of title designer for “Cry of the Banshee.” If you’re thinking, “Cry of the what?” you’re probably not alone. At all. Directed by Gordon Hessler — whose credits also include “Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park” and twelve episodes of “CHiPs” — the film stars Vincent Price as Lord Edward Whitman, an evil Elizabethan nobleman who tries to exterminate an entire coven of witches. In 1978, there were two things on the minds of boys ages 5 to 16. Ok, maybe three. They were Kiss, Star Wars, and girls. You pick the order they were in for you personally. I was 6, so girls really hadn't figured into the equation yet.
Girls were on boys' minds for the obvious reasons. Star Wars was popular because it had just been released the year before and blew everyone away with its groundbreaking, never-before-seen special effects and imagery. After only being around since 1973, Kiss was the hottest band in the world because of their shockingly explosive on-stage spectacle and look. They had already released several best-selling studio, live, and solo albums. They had t-shirts, stickers, belt buckles, and everything else you can think of with their logo and likenesses plastered on them. The band even had a comic book that featured the members as superheroes that was published through Marvel Comics.

Gordon Hessler passed away in his sleep January 19th at the age of 83. An underrated horror director, Hessler cut his teeth on the Hitchcock Presents TV show then helmed several genuinely creepy and atmospheric British films. He worked with Vincent Price three times, all with scripts by Christopher Wicking; Scream & Scream Again (1970) was an outrageous sci-fi/horror hybrid that presented a berserk view of swinging 60′s London (and also starred Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee). Cry Of The Banshee (1970) was gritty and mean-spirited featuring Price as a sadistic monarch with an intense hatred of witchcraft and a sardonic sense of macabre. The Oblong Box (1969 – co-starring Chris Lee) was a dark and moody tale of voodoo, body snatching, medical experiments, brotherly betrayal, and being buried alive.
Hessler’s Murders In The Rue Morgue was like a Vincent Price movie without Price (it starred Herbert Lom and Jason Robards). It mixed Poe...

What can I say about the cannibal subgenre that stormed Euro cinema during the 70′s and 80′s? I love ‘em. I love ‘em when they’re good. I love them when they are not so good. I love them when they are an excuse to put naked women on the screen and cover them in Crayola paint (or reasonable knock off). There are very few that I dislike and most of the ones I dislike came about toward the end of the late 80′s as knock-offs of the best knock-offs that the subgenre ever produced. I’m looking at you Green Inferno (not the soon to be released Eli Roth homage picture either). Today we’re here to discuss Cannibal Terror, a Euro-Cine picture distributed by Severin Films and full of exploitation gold. Hope you brought your appetites because 1980x is going to the jungle, hungry, horny and ready to...

Any of you out there remember the Gaf View-Master? I sure do, and I still own one. In the days before home video, the hand-held 3D viewer was often the only way kids could replay images from their favorite movies, TV shows, theme parks and vacation spots. Sure, it was just a series of still images in a slideshow format, but it was in freakin' 3D, and you could watch it anywhere. Nathan Martin, creator of movie blog Cinecraze, remembers the View-Master fondly... so much, in fact, that he put together a series of mockup View-Master concepts that we'd all really love to see. “They sure don't make them like they used to,” he writes, “and I always wished they'd make 'em like they never did before.” To better visualize those childhood dreams that never quite came true, he created View-Master concepts for classics like Star Wars and the like,...

To say that Idw Publishing has successfully revived the Kiss comic franchise in a unique and entertaining manner would be an understatement. The band has become an energy that surpasses four physical bodies and now can be immortalized through the spiritual transportation of their mystical souls to other individuals… or possibly life forms? It's sort of like how the real group will live on for many more decades through countless tribute bands across the world. If fans get on board and stay onboard, there's no limit to the adventures we could see the "Four-Who-Are-One" embark on.

The rock band Kiss is no stranger to the comic book world. Ever since their debut appearance in 1977's issue #12 of Marvel's Howard the Duck monthly series, the Starchild, the Demon, the Spaceman, and the Catman have become not only rock stars but superheroes. The foursome has appeared in two magazine-format comics bookending their television movie exploits in Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park. Since then, they've appeared in three different series published through Image Comics, Dark Horse Comics, and Platinum Studios. Let's not forget their latest appearance in Archie Comics.

The rock band Kiss is no stranger to the comic book world. Ever since their debut appearance in 1977's issue #12 of Marvel's Howard the Duck monthly series, the Starchild, the Demon, the Spaceman, and the Catman have become not only rock stars but superheroes. So, folks…I’ve been pretty lazy in my necessary duties as a staffer at the Liberal Dead. I don’t really pull my weight and even though I’m not doing this for pay or anything like that, I do feel consequences whenever I don’t pitch in. And it’s not because of my editors or anything—no, every single person at Liberal Dead is a great person who understands that I’m a busy man. I still feel like I have an obligation, however, to present my corner of weirdo horror cinema to you, the reader. As a result, it’s time for me to make it up to you. Simple sex won’t suffice. We’re going straight-out clusterfuck on this one. I present unto you as many reviews as I can do in one weekend, in one big, snappy package. I hope it’s enough.

If you thought the TV movie Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park was a bit of a stretch for the rock & roll overlords, you might not be ready for this one: teen comic-book hero Archie and his pals Betty, Veronica and Jughead – the same group (well, sort of) behind the #1 pop single "Sugar, Sugar" back in 1969 – will be teaming up with Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley and company to do battle with monsters in a new Archie Comics storyline. The cover art and a trailer are waiting below, so take a deep breath and jump... Archie writer Alex Segura stated that the four-issue series, which pits the two bands against vampires, werewolves and zombies, "brings together two pieces of Americana for the first time."...

Kiss made a name for themselves by crafting big hard rock tunes accompanied by pyrotechnics, moon boots, face paint and a healthy dose of sexual suggestion. They then took that name and slapped it on just about any product you can think of. Founding members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley have created a gigantic empire full of merchandise gobbled up by the Kiss Army. For any fan of Kiss, there are literally hundreds of ways to bring Kiss into your life, in the form of action figures, underwear, toothbrushes, lamps, air fresheners, condoms, credit cards and the legendary Kiss Kasket (which you can buy while you're still alive and use it as a beer cooler until you have to fill it with your corpse).
Now comes the news that Stanley and Simmons have signed a deal to produce a television show for children in Canada. According to production company E...

In the entertainment industry people claim to be many things -porn starlets pass themselves off as models and actresses, washed up movie actors are always on the edge of doing something super secret and new, and band after band claims to be the newest/hardest/most innovative entity on the planet. This is an industry built on deception, on feeding illusions to people so they will buy things that -let’s face it --they don’t need. However, every now and again something will wash up on these sterile shores that is unique. The Gothsicles are a prime example; an entity thrust from weightless depths to alien light and air. Being forced to adapt to the parameters of this ephemeral world has given them a perspective that doesn’t adhere to the fallacies of entertainment. It was plainly evident on their first album, ‘NESferatu’ that they write about topics essential...
