Shazam!, released in 2019, was the story of Billy (Asher Angel), a teenage boy granted the ability to transform into an adult, off-brand Superman (Zachary Levi) with the simple cry of the film’s title. Today it is rarely upheld as a highlight in DC’s catalogue, but at a time in which the studio’s output so often felt exhaustingly cataclysmic, it was refreshing to see a superhero movie that forefronted sweetness and sincerity.
What a difference four years make. Shazam!’s sequel, Fury of the Gods, has now been sent out, defenceless, into DC’s cinematic no man’s land. The film marks one of the last breaths of an old regime at the studio, which is now under the control of Peter Safran and Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn. Their universe will presumably dispense with the dishevelled approach to tone and continuity that characterised the tenure of their predecessor Walter Hamada.

It would be tough finding a harder working actor than Liev Schreiber who has successfully transitioned from supporting roles in movies to his very own TV show, playing fixer Ray Donovan on the Showtime series for five seasons. He’s received four Golden Globe nominations and two Emmy nominations playing that role.

In a world that constantly relegates them to the sidelines, three teenage swimmers dare to take center stage to prove how sports can transcend disability. In the documentary “Swim Team,” we follow three teenage boys on the autism spectrum as they inspire the community around them while competing for greatness.
The debut documentary feature from Lara Stolman, the film follows three swimmers from the New Jersey Hammerheads, a swim team that includes teenagers on the autism spectrum, as they persevere beyond expectations while they train for both state and the national Special Olympics. Surrounding all of this are the athletes’ own coming-of-age stories, as they learn to navigate adolescence and begin to build a future of their own.
The film won the award for Best Sports Documentary at the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival in October, and it will have its New York premiere at the Doc NYC Festival on...

The next era of Avril Lavigne music appears to be coming in the near future.
The Canadian pop singer has been in the studio all throughout this year writing songs, and she has even been working with her estranged husband, Nickelback frontman Chad Kroger.
It seems as though now there’s a little more activity, and new music may actually be coming into fruition. In a Facebook post from Rodney Howard, Lavigne’s drummer, he shared a throwback video clip of their performance of “Here’s To Never Growing Up” on the The Jay Leno Show with the caption, “Looks like the Disco Ball drums are gonna be coming back out for some September/October action.”
Whether that means that he’ll be recording for Lavigne music come September/October or perhaps playing shows that will be supporting a new album, it looks like major news isn’t too far away.

Has it really been 20 years since Hunchback of Notre Dame hit theaters? Oui, c'est vrai! The 34th animated feature from the House of Mouse, Hunchback has a place among the Disney Renaissance movies of the 1990s, though it tends to be less remembered and celebrated than the likes of The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and Mulan. Adapted from Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel, it’s darker than many Disney pics, and the only animated movie from the studio that’s had a major focus on themes of religion and faith. Though the filmmakers “were told to not make the movie too religious — a pretty daunting task when you consider how much of this story takes place inside of a big church,” animator Floyd Norman said. Hunchback of Notre Dame also had an outcast hero that didn’t look like dashing princes of Disney films past. And...

In 2011, Faye Corman was rushing through a New Jersey train station after a visit to the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia with her 3-year-old blind son, Jon Paul, when the boy suddenly stopped to stare at the platform's concrete floor. Just when she was thinking that she might have to scoop him up in her arms, something incredible happened: Jon Paul reached down and picked up a shiny silver gum wrapper. And that's when Faye knew. Former San Francisco 49ers star Dana Stubblefield was charged Monday with the alleged 2015 rape of a woman prosecutors say was developmentally disabled after an investigation authorities said lasted more than a year. Hollywood seems to be having a moment with the JFK-era. This spring, HBO will release "All The Way" starring Bryan Cranston as Lyndon B. Johnson, as he deals with his new role as President following the assassination of JFK. Pablo Larrain is currently working on "Jackie" about JFK's widow starring Natalie Portman, and now, the former President's sister is taking center stage in a new pic. Emma Stone will play Rosemary Kennedy in "A Letter From Rosemary." Nick Yarborough has penned the script, which will focus on the final days of Rosemary (presumably, this means it'll be told in flashback), who was left mentally disabled after a frontal lobotomy at the age of 23. She was largely kept away from the public eye as a result, though her condition inspired her sister Eunice to found the Special Olympics. Apparently this is a hot project in Hollywood, and one can only imagine...

Fans of the now defunct Grantland have been patiently waiting for Bill Simmons’ newest project to get off the ground. Today, Simmons explained the process behind the name of that project, The Ringer, in the site’s debut newsletter. “The Ringer? The Ringer. Easy to spell. Easy to say. Easy to remember,” Simmons wrote before admitting that the name “frightened” him for two reasons: It’s the name of a Johnny Knoxville comedy about the Special Olympics, and “If you look at theringer.com too fast, it looks like a Santa Barbara wine called Theringer.” The Ringer was chosen “partly...
