Baz Luhrmann‘s Elvis was one of the first movie productions to be affected by the Covid-19 when star Tom Hanks announced he and wife Rita Wilson had both tested positive for coronavirus. Now, a year later, things have come full-circle and Warner Bros. is officially delaying the movie to 2022. Originally, Elvis was supposed to open this […]

Warner Bros.’ biographical drama about the life and times of Elvis Presley will no longer hit theaters this year. The studio has postponed the film from Nov. 5, 2021 to June 3, 2022.
Baz Luhrmann is directing the still-untitled movie, which he co-wrote with Craig Pearce. Austin Butler, who recently appeared as Tex Watson in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” is playing the man himself, while Tom Hanks is portraying his enigmatic manager Colonel Tom Parker.
“Elvis” was pushed back because it’s still in production in Australia. Sources say the film has another five weeks of material to shoot so it wouldn’t have been completed in time for its original release date. It started to film last March, but had to shut down production because Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson tested positive for coronavirus. Hanks and Wilson were the first Hollywood celebrities to go public with their diagnosis and have since recovered.

Exclusive: Following a lengthy search, director Baz Luhrmann has tapped up-and-comer Alton Mason to play legendary musician Little Richard in Warner Bros’ Elvis.
Sources tell Deadline that even as the film got back into production following suspension due to Covid-19, Luhrmann wanted to make sure he took his time in finding the right American actor to play the part of the iconic rock ‘n’ roll showman, who died last year.
Mason joins an ensemble that includes Austin Butler as Elvis Presley, Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker and Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla Presley. Luhrmann’s Elvis explores the life and music of the King, seen through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Parker. The story delves into the complex dynamic between Presley and Parker spanning more than 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape...

A couple of days ago I presented my editor with the brilliant idea of ranking Elvis Presley‘s songs to honor his birthday on January 8. Being a Mississippi girl, and having spent almost 30 years of that time living in the town of his birth, I am aware of his huge catalogue of hits, but picking just 25 out of such a variety proved to be more challenging than I anticipated. It has also been a reminder of the enormous impact that this boy from a small town made across three entertainment mediums and across several genres of music.
Born January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Ms, Presley spent his first 13 years there, with his interest in music sparking from a guitar gifted to him, church hymns and local hillbilly singer Mississippi Slim. After the family moved to Memphis, Tn, in 1948, Presley was surrounded by many different styles of music, including country, hillbilly, gospel and blues,...

Tom Hanks had an eventful 2020, to say the least. The beloved actor became one of the first major public figures to suffer from Covid-19, and used his level of fame and influence to try and keep people on the right track in regards to maintaining their health and safety, while he also leveraged it for comedic effect when he made a surprise cameo in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.
The two-time Academy Award winner took top billing in two new movies as well, both of which were affected by the Coronavirus pandemic. War War II drama Greyhound marked Hanks’ first writing credit in almost a decade and was clearly a project he held very dear, so it wasn’t surprising when he publicly voiced his disappointment at Apple TV+ securing the rights to make it a streaming exclusive.

Despite the pandemic, there was still almost $1 billion spent on drama production in Australia in the last financial year, indicating the sector had been on track for a potential recordbreaker before it was interrupted.
That’s according Screen Australia’s annual Drama Report, released today, which details expenditure on all local and foreign drama production in 2019-20, across film, TV, and online, as well in post-production, digital and visual effects (Pdv).
The topline figure of $991 million in total drama expenditure is just 18 per cent down on 2018-19. Notably, that number does include projects that began principal photography but entered into hiatus mid-March.
Not included are the 26 drama titles meant to shoot in 2019-20 that were delayed or postponed due to the pandemic, with budgets that exceeded $325 million.
Indeed, if those those had gone ahead, total expenditure would likely have neared or surpassed 2016-17’s record $1.3 billion.

Dacre Montgomery with Geraldine Viswanathan in ‘The Broken Hearts Gallery.’
If Sony Pictures’ rom-com The Broken Hearts Gallery, now screening in cinemas, had been made five years ago, Geraldine Viswanathan doubts that a woman of colour like her would have been cast as the lead.
The Newcastle-raised 25-year-old, whose father is an Indian-born doctor and mother is Swiss, plays Lucy, a New York art gallery assistant who clings to souvenirs from numerous failed relationships.
Nursing another broken heart, Lucy befriends Nick (fellow Aussie Dacre Montgomery), an emotionally-closed guy who is trying to raise the money to renovate his dream hotel. Lucy sets out to build the gallery of the title in his lobby as her relationship with Nick changes.
“If this movie was made even five years ago I don’t know if I would be in the lead,” Viswanathan said in an Australians in Film webinar with Montgomery, moderated by Jenny Cooney.

Asia’s stuttering film and TV production outlook stems in large measure from the relative caution with which the region’s governments have approached the coronavirus outbreak.
Calling on experience garnered with several recent bouts of epidemic disease, governments around the Asia-Pacific region quickly urged their populations to mask up. Then they locked the borders. Most of Asia has remained that way since March.
The more-developed territories in Asia have achieved far lower Covid-19 infection and death rates than countries in Europe and the U.S., and some local production behind mostly closed borders has resumed.
New Zealand’s decision to go “hard and early” against the virus quickly shut down the “Avatar” series, which was already shooting, Amazon Prime Video’s epic “The Lord of the Rings” series and Jane Campion’s Netflix-bound “Power of the Dog.” That they have all since returned is testament to self-isolation, quickly...

The Australian government has opened the Temporary Interruption Fund that is designed to overcome the problem of production insurance and swiftly get cameras rolling on films and TV shows.
The A$50 million fund will be administered by Screen Australia on behalf of the federal government. It was announced in late June, in response to significant industry lobbying from producers including See-Saw Films’ Emile Sherman and Cjz’s Nick Murray.
While Australia has been mostly successful at controlling the coronavirus, and has well-defined protocols for the operation of film and TV sets and location, relatively productions have started or restarted. One of the biggest stumbling blocks has been the refusal of insurance companies to provide cover for interruptions or stoppage caused by Covid-19.

A 1950s black-and-white television in a living room typical of the era plays the intro to a “Twilight Zone” like TV show. While the Rod Serling-sounding narrator intones, “Tonight’s episode: The Vast of Night,” the camera slowly moves closer to the flickering screen until the image on the screen fills our view. Tom Hanks was one of the most notable early coronavirus patients, and having fully recovered from the disease, the actor has decided to give something back in the battle to find an effective treatment. Today, he tweeted some photos (see below) of a bag of his blood plasma, which he’s donated to UCLA as part of their own efforts on that front. Having had the virus, Hanks’ blood contains antibodies, and those antibodies may be beneficial to patients currently infected, or useful for broader research.

Shout! Factory's genre label Scream Factory has become the Blu-ray home of legendary filmmaker John Carpenter as of the last few years, and the latest release is the kung-fu action flick Big Trouble in Little China. Made just before lead Kurt Russell became a star, Big Trouble in Little China came out in 1986. This was after both Carpenter's dread-filled, existential opus The Thing and the TV film Elvis, both of which Russell starred in. Okay. So, I still don't know how I feel about Big Trouble in Little China; it's a very strange film that's both a modern Western set in San Francisco as well as a hyperactive, deeply and darkly magical Eastern extravaganza. There's some regrettable stereotyping and laughable...

Out on August 13 in North America from Scream Factory comes Gary Sherman's 1982 film Vice Squad. Filmed on the streets of Los Angeles, Sherman directs Season Hubley as Princess, a prostitute who wants a better life for herself and her daughter. However, there's a sicko on the loose (like any day or night in L.A.), and Gary Swanson, plays Tom Walsh, a cop that wants to nab Ramrod, a vicious pimp, for his crimes against women. Walsh ropes in Princess as bait, and we're off to the races. Of course, there are twists and turns, and perversions of justice, so Ramrod's released...

On the day Elvis Presley would have turned 84, NBC is marking the occasion by announcing performers for its “Elvis All-Star Tribute,” which will air on February 17 from 9-11 p.m. (Et/Pt).
A healthy mix of young stars and established names recreated the look and feel of the famed Elvis “’68 Comeback Special.” Complete with its “boxing ring without ropes” set on a Universal City soundstage, the special, hosted by Shelton, was taped last October before an invited audience. Ken Ehrlich produced and Don Was served as musical director.
With Ehrlich on board as producer for his own Aeg Ehrlich Ventures, the longtime Grammy guru leaned on his years of experience to match the right performer with the right song and come up with well-curated collaborations. Speaking to Variety, Ehrlich explains: “I was just listening to John Legend one day and thought, he’d be perfect for ‘A Little Less Conversation.

I’ll keep it simple: John Carpenter is my favorite director, and has been since I grasped the concept of what a director did. His run from 1976 to 1988 is unparalleled in my opinion; from the eerie siege of Assault on Precinct 13 to They Live’s way too prescient take on governmental oppression, there’s nary a stinker in the bunch. But within this stellar run he made a couple of turns towards the small screen, where he was able to hone his craft under the duress of tight schedules and restrictive content. And since this is a horror column we won’t be talking about the excellent Elvis (1979) but rather his tip of the hat to Hitchcock, Someone’s Watching Me! (1978), a suspenseful tale of voyeurism that’s a more than solid lead in to Halloween.

There have been many TV bios of Elvis Presley but Elvis, The Movie, the once-elusive 1979 feature starring Kurt Russell, was the first and is still the best. An 18-minute condensed version of Elvis The Movie on Super-8 sound film will be screened at Super-8 Marlon Brando Movie Madness on November 4th at The Way Out Club – (yes, we’re aware that Elvis, The Movie has nothing to do with Marlon Brando, but it’s the variety that makes it the madness!)
When Elvis died August 16 1978 at age 42, it sent shock waves around the world, comparable to the deaths of Princess Diana or Michael Jackson in later decades. The 3-hour epic Elvis The Movie, produced by Dick Clark for the ABC network premiered 18 months later on February 11 1979 and, despite...
