Taylor Swift started off as a country artist at a time when the genre was both less respectful and accommodating of the voices of women than at any other point in its storied history. The singer’s first four albums barely scan as country music in a meaningful way, instead embracing her preternatural gifts for pop conventions, and her output has gotten stronger the more openly she’s embraced those skills. In the 18 years since the single “Tim McGraw” launched Swift to country stardom, she’s jettisoned the genre’s ill-fitting signifiers and overcome the limitations of her early recordings—improvements captured in her “Taylor’s Version” re-recordings as a powerful statement of artistic agency.
After spending the last year traveling the world on her Eras Tour, Swift has returned with a double album, The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology. To celebrate, we’ve revisited all 11 of her studio albums...

Berlinale co-directors Carlo Chatrian and Mariette Rissenbeek are going out with a bang in their final year, with a lineup unveiled today featuring the latest works by Olivier Assayas, Bruno Dumont, Mati Diop, Hong Sang-soo, Abderrahmane Sissako, Jane Schoenbrun, Alonso Ruizpalacios, Matias Pineiro, Travis Wilkerson, Kazik Radwanski, Annie Baker, and more.
When the co-directors were asked by Screen Daily about their departure, Chatrian said, “It’s quite simple. Mariette and I had a mandate of five years. It is true that at the beginning I said that I was willing to go on because there was a shared will with the [German] Ministry [of Culture] to go on. But then the people who have the responsibility to see the future of the Berlinale thought this structure of two leaders was not the right one and I don’t consider myself able to run the festival alone. And that was the decision of the Ministry.

Tim Burton loves to make things spooky and morbid, but his favorite holiday might well be Christmas. Look at how many of his films take place during the Yuletide season: "Batman Returns," "Edward Scissorhands," etc. He also conceived of "The Nightmare Before Christmas," which is all about Halloween Town's top ghoul, Jack Skellington (Chris Sarandon), getting Christmas fever. While Burton handed off directing duties of the stop-motion picture to Henry Selick, it's easy to see his fingerprints and why he would empathize with Jack.
David A. Bossert's "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas Visual Companion" was released this year for the film's 30th anniversary. The book features interviews with the film's crew, from Selick to Art Director Kelly Asbury, where they describe forming the film's distinct visual style — since there were multiple holiday-themed dimensions, they couldn't stick to just one aesthetic.

When Henry Selick's animated fantasy "The Nightmare Before Christmas" was first released in October of 1993, it wasn't an overwhelming hit. Made for a budget of $20 million, the film only opened to about $191,000 in its first weekend. It would eventually crawl its way to a respectable but not mind-blowing $50 million overall. Disney, the film's distributor, clearly had little faith in the project and released it under its Touchstone label, feeling it was too weird for little kids. Only a small segment of passionate teenage Tim Burton fans latched onto it (Burton designed the film and wrote the poem on which the script is based), and it was the weirdos and Goths who bought it on VHS and committed the film to memory. For a few brief, sweet years, "Nightmare" was little more than a legitimate cult phenomenon.

Piper Laurie, who famously played perhaps the scariest movie mom of all time in Carrie, is dead at 91. According to THR, the veteran actress had been unwell for some time. Laurie’s career goes back to the last days of the studio era, with her initially an ingenue for Universal Pictures who starred opposite big heartthrobs of the day like Rock Hudson and Tony Curtis. Yet, she resisted being pigeonholed in those roles, breaking free of her contract to take on meatier parts, such as her Emmy-winning role in the TV production of Days of Wine and Roses, where she played an alcoholic. She earned an Academy Award nomination for her turn opposite Paul Newman in The Hustler but didn’t take another movie role for fifteen years when she returned with a vengeance in Brian DePalma’s Carrie.

Piper Laurie, who blossomed as an actress only after extricating herself from the studio system and went on to rack up three Oscar nominations, has died. She was 91.
Laurie’s manager Marion Rosenberg confirmed the news to Variety, writing, “A beautiful human being and one of the great talents of our time.”
Laurie scored her first Oscar nomination for her work opposite Paul Newman in 1961’s classic poolhall drama “The Hustler,” in which she played an alcoholic who memorably tells Newman’s character, “Look, I’ve got troubles and I think maybe you’ve got troubles. Maybe it’d be better if we just leave each other alone.”
Though she informally retired to raise a family for more than a decade, she returned to film and television in the mid-’70s and racked up an impressive roster of characterizations, including Oscar-nominated turns in “Carrie” and in “Children of a Lesser God,...

The Replacements are celebrating their 1985 major label debut Tim with a new deluxe reissue titled Tim: Let It Bleed Edition, out now via Rhino.
Clocking in at 65 tracks, Tim: Let It Bleed Edition begins with a long-awaited fresh mix of the original album. The Replacements were never happy with producer Tommy Ramone’s final mix of Tim, so they enlisted Ramones and Talking Heads collaborator Ed Stasium — who was considered to co-produce the LP with Ramone back in the day — to revamp the record for Disc One. A remastered version of Ramone’s original mix follows on Disc Two.
Disc Three, entitled Sons of No One: Rare & Unreleased, features previously unreleased Replacements demos, including tracks from a January 1985 recording session led by the band’s hero, Big Star’s Alex Chilton. The Replacements are about to celebrate their 1985 major label debut Tim with the upcoming deluxe edition Tim: Let It Bleed Edition. But before that’s out September 22nd, they’ve shared a preview with an alternate version of their hit “Can’t Hardly Wait” that features some prominent cello shredding.
Frontman Paul Westerberg had always wanted to experiment with the recording of “Can’t Hardly Wait.” Upon writing it in 1984, he made an acoustic guide track — recorded in the cavernous Nicollet Studios, which had once been a movie theater — and then record a full-band version over it. However, the band couldn’t hear the guide track over their instruments, so they decided to record a more standard rock version of the song.
But that wasn’t exactly what Westerberg had in mind. So the next day, he decided to enlist the studio’s receptionist, Michelle Kinney, a trained cellist active in the...

Timothée Chalamet is throwing it back to his Lil Timmy Tim days.
The Oscar-nominated actor revealed his musical inspirations going into Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown,” which is set to start production this August. Elle Fanning co-stars. Chalamet has been attached to the James Mangold period piece since 2020 and will be performing Dylan’s songs onscreen.
“I’ve been preparing for forever,” Chalamet told Vogue of working with a vocal coach every day.
Yet Chalamet’s musical inclinations go back over a decade, with his viral Lil Timmy Tim rap performances and a special “Cabaret” production at his Laguardia performing arts high school in New York City.

The right song can take a movie scene from memorable to simply unforgettable, and few movie-music combinations have had the impact and staying power of Harry Belafonte's "Day-o (The Banana Boat Song)" in Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice." Belafonte's songs are all throughout the 1988 dark comedy about a ghost couple being haunted by an annoying living family that moved into their home, but "Day-o" is the big one, with the cast lip-syncing and dancing to the song during a bizarre dinner party. The moment is incredible, as new homeowners Charles (Jeffrey Jones) and Delia Deetz (Catherine O'Hara) invite over some of their fancy friends from the city, hoping to impress them with their large, oddly decorated house in the country. Instead, the home's original owners, Barbara (Geena Davis) and Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin) decide to possess the dinner party in an attempt to scare them away and force the Deetzes to move out.

I can't say for certain my love of stop-motion animation began with "The Nightmare Before Christmas," but it was definitely the film that cemented my affection for the art form at a young age. The brainchild of director Henry Selick, writer Caroline Thompson, producer Tim Burton (who also penned the poem that inspired the movie), and songwriter Danny Elfman, the 1993 musical fantasy remains a feast for the eyes, even now that its warped, macabre character designs and settings have been co-opted by Disney for mass consumption.
On the surface, "The Nightmare Before Christmas" is a tale about Jack Skellington, the "Pumpkin King" of all things hair-raising and spine-chilling in a fantastical place known as Halloween Town. A parody of rock biopics that celebrates its subject by completely trashing the facts of his life and career, Eric Appel’s Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is relentlessly silly, wholesome at heart and so stuffed with cameos it might give you the idea that a couple of generations of cool people love this guy.
Co-written by the artist (who also costars as a fickle record exec), it’s a kindred spirit to his songs without being so gag-hungry it forgets how to tell a story. Just like his music, it’s not for everybody, and to be sure, there will be few audiences as hungrily receptive as the one at its Midnight Madness Toronto premiere. But it brought the house down here, and should be a boon to the underdog Roku Channel when it arrives there in November.

Golf journalist Tim Rosaforte got the type of tribute today from Jack Nicklaus that journalists usually heap on legends like Jack Nicklaus. Rosaforte, who was one of the top golf journalists in the world and one of the most popular announcers on Golf Channel and NBC Sports, died Tuesday of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 66.
Nicklaus began a three-tweet tribute to Rosaforte with the following: “Many hearts, including Barbara’s & mine, hurt today after the passing of our friend Tim Rosaforte. Tim had a wonderful ability to develop trust from so many, and because of that—plus his work ethic—if there was an important story to be told in golf, Tim usually reported it first.”
The idea of trust comes up repeatedly in a video the golf great posted of his final visit with Roasforte last year, in which they speak about their bond, respect and, as Rosaforte puts it,...

During the last years the world has become perhaps even more aware of the phenomenon of mass immigration, especially due to the still ongoing conflict in Syria. While the news of many people, desperate to find peace and the opportunity for a new life somewhere certainly touches us, it was perhaps the constant stream of images which have left a mark on our collective mind. The idea of people ripped from their homes, with nothing left other than the clothes on their bodies and a few other remains, has become a reminder of one of the most pressing conditions of our times, one which will probably only worsen due to the Covid-pandemic. The often cynical notion of the worth of human beings seems to define political debates, a discussion which hides the fates of people in favor of economic and social benefit. In many ways, Kaouther Ben Haria’s feature...

It’s happening. It’s finally happening. What was once a particularly pervasive and aggressive Internet meme is now a reality. HBO Max’s list of new releases for March 2021 is highlighted by none other than the mythical Snyder cut.
The entity now known as Zach Snyder’s Justice League will premiere on March 18. While it was originally planned to be a four-part miniseries, this recut version of 2017’s ill-fated Justice League will in fact be a four-hour movie. But perhaps even four hours won’t be enough for fans who have been waiting years for just such an event.

To be clear, the majority of the original series coming to HBO Max actually belongs to HBO. Shows like I May Destroy You (June 7), Perry Mason (June 21), and I’ll Be Gone in the Dark (June 28) all belong to HBO…which now just happens to be a part of HBO Max. Confusing stuff, we know, but rest assured that if you have HBO Max you’ll get these shows…and if you only have HBO, you can go ahead and just get HBO Max for the same price anyway.
