With their new horror thriller Guess Who, Tubi may finally have come up with a fairly original idea for one of their films. As far as I can tell, it’s the first film to use mummering as a major plot point. No, not mummies, mummering. What is mummering? Mummering is a Christmas-time house-visiting tradition practised in Newfoundland and Labrador, Ireland, and the City of Philadelphia. It adds a touch of Halloween to the season as people would dress in disguise and go door to door. If they were invited in, they’d give some kind of performance while their hosts tried to guess who they were.
Michael and Kaitlyn, his fiancée, are driving out to meet his family when they have to stop for gas.

Recently, I wrote an article about movies that were surprisingly hard to find on streaming or Blu-ray, and one of the movies I mentioned was a little-remembered 1988 thriller called Shoot to Kill (aka Deadly Pursuit in the UK). The film was a decent box office hit in its day, but outside of a DVD release many years ago, it has sunk into obscurity.
This is a shame, as Shoot to Kill is a nifty little movie. After a few comments praised the film, I decided to revisit it for myself, as I honestly hadn’t seen it since the nineties and had no idea if it would hold up. To my surprise, not only did it hold up, but Shoot to Kill is a bit of a lost 80s action classic.

Delays are bound to happen when making movies, but something was clearly wrong when Amusement was postponed not once but twice in 2008. It wasn’t long before John Simpson’s American directorial debut was removed from the theatrical schedule altogether and then later dropped on DVD that following year. Although going from the big-screen to direct-to-video is an undeserved fate in some cases, this movie’s new destination was understandable. The unfavorable feedback from an early test screening — the word “disastrous” was tossed around — forced Warner Bros to salvage the potential flop now on its hands. Nevertheless, the negative consensus hasn’t stopped Amusement from amassing a small fan base over the years; its followers focus on this panned movie’s few merits rather than its many shortcomings.
At first, Amusement looks to be an anthology; this horror movie’s first three acts are well defined and almost function as standalone short features.

Happy New Year! ‘Terror Train’ Dares to Ask Whether Dying Is Preferable to Watching a Bad Magic Show
On Friday nights — and special occasions!— IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: You Know, Getting Murdered on a Train Might Still Be Better Than Going to Times Square
The underwhelming New Year’s Eve party is a universal human experience if there ever was one. The holiday is ostensibly the biggest night of the year for debauchery, but burnout, outlandish expectations, and rowdy crowds often turn it into a letdown that makes it a little easier to trade our holiday cheer in for January discipline. But no matter what disappointing experience comes your way tonight, you can take comfort...

Directed by Emmett Alston, who crafted the story with screenwriter Leonard Neubauer, New Year’s Evil has the following synopsis: On New Year’s Eve, a famous TV punk-rock lady icon hosts a late hour countdown celebration of music and partying. All goes well, until she receives a strange sounding phone call. Lonely women wanting to celebrate the holiday become easy prey for a maniacal murdering misogynist whose New Year’s resolution is to...

It’s only about two minutes and 25 seconds, yet it remains the single best thing Eli Roth has ever done. Tucked right in the middle of Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s ambitious, mondo-grimy Grindhouse (2007) is a trailer for a fake movie called Thanksgiving. You probably remember it, if you remember much about that wax Forty-Deuce museum with a pulse. It’s the end of November, someone is murdering horny teens, kind old ladies and, er, hornier teens in the town of Plymouth, Massachusetts. The killer is dressed like a pilgrim.

David Gordon Green's 2018 slasher film "Halloween," a direct sequel to John Carpenter's 1978 slasher film also called "Halloween," famously ignored the nine "Halloween" sequels and remakes made from 1981 to 2009. The original film starred Jamie Lee Curtis as a teenage babysitter named Laurie Strode who ran afoul of a mysterious, silent masked killer named Michael Myers. In the original "Halloween II," it was revealed that Laurie was Michael's long-lost sister, a conceit Green would handily abandon for his 2018 update. Instead, Laurie was, 40 years later, still wounded by the events of the 1978 film, and had become a ragged survivalist, outfitting her home with booby traps and training herself how to use weapons in the off chance that Michael should ever escape the local mental institution and begin his killing spree again. Perhaps predictably, that very thing happens.
Green's "Halloween" ends with Laurie trapping Michael in a burning building, seemingly to die forever.

Just in time to start getting ready for trick or treaters, Laurie Strode’s house from 1978’s Halloween is up for sale. No, it’s not being handled through Strode Realty…
Of course, the Strode residence isn’t even close to being as iconic as the Myers house – which got plenty of attention in John Carpenter’s film for being the site of the brutal killing of Judith Myers at the hand of six-year-old Michael – but it does still have one of Halloween’s eeriest scenes when Laurie sees Michael standing outside of her window amidst clothesline. Nor does it have the allure of the Wallace house, where teens were strangled and stabbed to death. In other words, this isn’t exactly the kind of crib you’re going to find at Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights. The house has such little screen time that the official listing doesn’t...

What’s the scariest creature the world has ever known? If you said the sloth, you’re not alone. Some may find these furry bundles of lethargy charming, but a closer look reveals a devious predator lurking amidst the trees just waiting to attack us with those long, blood-soaked claws. Matthew Goodhue’s Slotherhouse pits this tree-hanging menace with another fearsome fiend: the ambitious sorority girl.
Animal lover Emily (Lisa Ambalavanar) has set her sights on the Presidential Suite of her lavish sorority house as she begins her senior year of college. Unfortunately, this means she’ll have to take down incumbent mean girl Brianna (Sydney Craven) and her team of frightened minions. Hoping to boost her social media cred, Emily adopts a three–toed sloth she names Alpha from a sketchy animal poacher and unwittingly unleashes a blood bath as the tiny assassin slices her way through the Sigma Lambda Theta sisters.

There’s another Amityville movie to watch! And this one actually has some connection to the early days of the franchise. These days it seems like every indie filmmaker in the world has made something with Amityville in the title, but the new film The Amityville Curse is based on the novel of the same title, which was written by Hans Holzer. Holzer was a parapsychologist who invested the supposedly haunted house in Amityville in the ’70s and went on to write the books Murder in Amityville (which served as a source of inspiration for Amityville II: The Possession), The Secret of Amityville, and yes, The Amityville Curse. The new adaptation of Holzer’s work has been released through the Tubi streaming service as a Tubi Original – and you can check out the trailer for it in the embed above.

A new film adaptation of Hans Holzer’s The Amityville Curse, which was published in 1981, brand new Tubi Original horror movie The Amityville Curse is now streaming.
Hans Holzer’s book, it’s interesting to note, ended up serving as the basis for official franchise movie The Amityville Curse, which was released back in 1990.
Tubi previews, “The new adaptation of Hans Holzer’s novel is a modern take on the ever popular franchise with a fictionalized story that remains true to the novel.”
Further ensuring an authentic approach, Incendo secured the underlying rights to Hans Holzer’s titular original novel from the estate.
In The Amityville Curse, “A group of friends purchase an infamous home with the intention of flipping it, only to discover a deadly paranormal presence bent on destruction.”

The Amityville Curse seemed to bear a couple of its own curses. It’s an Amityville knockoff and after Amityville Cult, Amityville Thanksgiving, Amityville in the Hood, and so many more, it’s pretty much a guarantee of mediocrity. Secondly, it’s a Tubi Original, which usually carries a very similar guarantee.
But there were a couple of reasons to be hopeful as well. Director Éric Tessier may not be well known outside of Quebec but his adaptions of two of Patrick Senécal’s novels, 5150 Elm’s Way and more importantly, Sur le Seuil aka Evil Words, are both excellent. Dennis Heaton wrote the film, based on the novel by the late Hans Holzer. Heaton you may recall wrote the Billy Connolly zom-com Fido.

Right now is an excellent time to be a fan of the horror genre and collector of physical media, as there are so many incredible companies doing great work in the space.
Here are five labels every horror fan should be aware of…
Vinegar Syndrome
If you have a deep interest in film preservation and film archives, you may already know the term “vinegar syndrome” which refers to the chemical process that causes a breakdown of film reels over time. These reels smell strongly like vinegar, hence the name.
Vinegar Syndrome the label was founded in 2012 with the goal to preserve and restore films from the 1960s through the 1980s. Preservation has always been top of mind with Vinegar Syndrome. Still, because of their fantastic preservation and restoration work, we also get some of the best DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K releases on the market from their archive.

Plot: It follows a college student as she boards a party train for Halloween, and ends up fighting for her life when a mysterious assailant begins killing the people one-by-one.
Review: The original Terror Train is a classic slasher whodunnit that provides many satisfying twists and turns. At least for me. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, as it’s very low-budget and cheaply lit. But that’s where a lot of the charm comes from. So I was a bit trepidatious when it came to Tubi’s remake of the Canadian Slasher. Would it live up to the original? Would it carve a path of its own? I had my concerns.
This remake follows the exact same structure as the original film, so if you’ve seen that, you’re going to have a lot of déjà vu. Every major beat is the exact same,...

Remakes like Philippe Gagnon's "Terror Train" will always face comparison complaints based on their existence, which is why I try my best in reviews to treat them as standalone. Critique the movie you're given — like this bargain bin, zero momentum slasher. "Terror Train" is the latest in a string of Tubi originals taking the Syfy route of The Asylum-level productions, filled with shoddy effects and worse performances. "Terror Train" is a deadly whodunit without any terror, proving itself inadequate before tickets are punched and conductors discover passenger corpses.

Of all the horror movies to remake, Tubi could do a lot worse than 1980’s “Terror Train.” Sure, the original is one of the countless slashers made in the wake of John Carpenter‘s 1978 classic “Halloween” and its massive success. But it’s also an underrated example of the subgenre’s formula and moral themes. On New Year’s Eve, a group of pre-med students pulls a prank on an awkward pledge who ends up traumatized in a psychiatric facility afterward.

"I'm done waiting, this ends now!" The entirely free streaming service Tubi has debuted an official trailer for a horror remake titled Terror Train, originally a cult classic from 1980 with Jamie Lee Curtis. It'll be available for streaming on Tubi tomorrow, and it's entirely free to watch. The film follows a college student as she boards a "party train" for Halloween, but then ends up fighting for her life when a mysterious assailant begins killing the people one-by-one. The original movie involves a similar premise - three years after a prank goes wrong, the six college students responsible are targeted by a masked killer at a New Year's Eve party aboard a train. The 2022 remake stars Robyn Alomar, Corteon Moore, Romy Weltman, Tori Barban, Matias Garrido, & Kenny Wong. This killer clown in this looks scary, but the rest of it looks like a made-for-tv campy, cheap slasher. Perfect for Halloween!

The 1980 movie Terror Train avoided the remake treatment during the 2000s, a time when retro slashers were being modernized one after the other. While a remake was in the works at one point, that project eventually evolved into something else. However, the Jamie Lee Curtis “slashic” has finally received an official redo after forty-two years; the most high-profile release in Tubi’s Terror on Tubi event is bringing the doomed party train straight into the 2020s. Yet despite its contemporary lingo, bloodier output and a few story adjustments, Philippe Gagnon’s Terror Train essentially follows the same route as the original.
From start to finish, the remake mirrors Roger Spottiswoode’s Terror Train. The setup is exactly the same as well, though someone might be asking why today’s college students would want to party on a train in the first place. But before the story leaves the station, the...

While not as famous as John Carpenter‘s slasher classic “Halloween,” 1980’s “Terror Train” cemented Jamie Lee Curtis‘ legacy as the definitive “final girl.” In the film, Curtis plays one of six friends who reckon with a killer out for revenge for a prank gone wrong years earlier on a train packed with rowdy college students. Alongside Curtis, the original movie also stars Ben Johnson and David Copperfield.

"Once the ride starts, the terror never stops." Entirely free streaming service Tubi has revealed a very short teaser trailer for their new horror remake of Terror Train, originally a cult classic from 1980 with Jamie Lee Curtis. This remake is being marketed as "Tubi's take on a cult classic" which is funny because I didn't realize the Tubi brand was so strong they could offer their own "take" on remakes? Weird. The 2022 remake stars Robyn Alomar, Corteon Moore, Romy Weltman, Tori Barban, Matias Garrido,...

Stanley Kubrick's 1975 epic "Barry Lyndon" is one of the most beautifully photographed movies ever committed to celluloid. The film's cinematographer John Alcott had previously shot "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "A Clockwork Orange" for Kubrick, and would win an Academy Award for his work on "Lyndon." Alcott would also shoot "The Shining," as well as the sleazy but gorgeous-looking B-movies "Terror Train," "Vice Squad," and "The Beastmaster."
The warm, dim, flame-dappled, Vermeer-like shimmer of "Barry Lyndon" came from Kubrick's insistence that the film be shot entirely with natural light. Because the film was set in the 1770s and 1780s, that meant there were to be no electric lights whatsoever. If a scene was set outdoors, the lighting would be dictated by where the sun was -- and what the weather was like -- at time of shooting. Indoor scenes set at night would be lit with nothing less than hundreds and hundreds of candles.

Trains as a mode of travel seems old-fashioned nowadays, but in storytelling, they remain a persuasive setting for tales of unease and suspense. The endless railroad does wonders for Diane Hoh’s 1992 young-adult book aptly titled The Train. By placing her characters on a cross-country tour with no handy means of escape, the author underlines that feeling of being trapped with not only strangers but also your worst fears.

Fresh on the heels of getting paid fat stacks to hang out in a hospital bed for an entire movie (which, good for her), national treasure and gift to the universe Jamie Lee Curtis has her eye on another horror property. The main protagonist in the "Halloween" franchise, Curtis solidified her reputation as a scream queen with starring roles in films like "The Fog," "Prom Night," and "Terror Train," despite famously disliking horror movies. She's a certifiable horror icon, but her run as Laurie Strode is likely soon coming to an end with the completion of David Gordon Green's...

About midway through the pandemic in 2020, after watching more films at home in just six months than I would typically watch in 12 months, I was dealing with a significant case of cabin fever. So, I would go for long drives across the many local Arizona highways late in the evenings. My steering wheel soundtrack was mostly film scores from every single decade of film throughout history. Along my many drives, through busy city lights, and out on the lonely borders of the town, I would be reminded of my love for road trip films. When a giant semi-truck refused to pass me and instead followed closely on my bumper, I remembered Spielberg's Duel. When a hitchhiker appeared out of nowhere, wearing an ankle-length black duster, I immediately thought of Rutger Hauer from The Hitcher. But the most memorable moment from these late-night cruises had to be pulling into a gas...

For all the great and classic horror movies that we come to know and love, there are plenty that get tossed to the side once they’ve been released for one reason or another. In the past several decades there have been many horror movies that have suffered this fate, and Terror Train is just one out of the many that a lot of people have likely forgotten. Apart from starring Jamie Lee Curtis, this movie didn’t have anything else going for it other than the fact that it was a strange and violent horror movie that had the effect of
