The canceled SXSW Film Festival will still hand out awards by allowing jurors to see the festival’s competition films.
SXSW director of film Janet Pierson made the announcement on Friday, which would have been the opening day of the festival. The event was canceled on March 6 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“This was going to [be] a transformative event, and with the cancellation, the filmmakers were left stranded and scrambling,” she said. “We had several Special Awards juries already in place via links, and since we are not able to present the event, we decided to continue and expand to all the juried competitions, if the majority of the filmmakers opted in and juries were available. We know it’s no substitute for the live SXSW event with its unique and fantastic audience, but at least it’s some way to get attention for these wonderful films.”

For a Valentine’s trip to the movies, you couldn’t wish for a hotter and more talented pair of lovers than Issa Rae and Lakeith Stanfield. He’s Mike, a New York journalist working for The Republic, an online publication that allows him the time and space and support to feel his way through stories (The Republic doesn’t exist, so don’t send in applications). She’s Mae, a curator at the Queens Museum who’s still smarting over her mother’s death from cancer, and adding bricks...

After roaring into the 2020 Oscar show with a company record of 24 nominations, Netflix wound up walking away tonight with only two wins: Laura Dern with Best Supporting Actress for Marriage Story and Best Feature Documentary American Factory.
Call it a bad case of deja vu: Netflix charged into this year’s Golden Globes with a massive 34 nominations (a combo of film and TV noms), and walked away from the night with a Best Supporting Actress win for Dern, and a Best Actress TV drama win for The Crown‘s Olivia Coleman. If you were to take bets in the Globes press room that night, there was a straw poll consensus that best drama was The Irishman‘s to lose, and lose it did. That projection was fueled by Irishman‘s Best Picture wins at the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle.

Exclusive: Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski, the hot writing duo behind $12m Sundance pic The Night House, are joining forces with genre label Fangoria on horror movie The Sisters Of Samhain. The script follows a group of friends who team up with a witch on Halloween night to prevent a rogue coven from bringing about the end of the world.
Fangoria’s owner Cinestate is financing the pic and will handle distribution. The Texas-based studio is teaming with Chicago-based media company Bloody Disgusting on the project, as well as Final Destination producers Practical Pictures and Grade A Entertainment. The latter two companies developed the script with director Gregg Bishop, who is set to helm.

White Collar vet Matt Bomer is back on USA Network — but charming con man Neal Caffrey he is definitely not.
In Season 3 of the crime anthology The Sinner (premiering Thursday at 9/8c), Bomer stars as Jamie Burns, an all-girls private school teacher with the makings of a perfect life. But from his first scene — let’s just say he’s doing something he shouldn’t on school grounds — it’s clear that Jamie is no saint. One of the most devilishly delightful Midnight movies to play the 2020 Sundance Film Festival was Scare Me, from writer/director/producer Josh Ruben, who also co-stars in the project alongside Aya Cash. The film is centered around two horror writers who spend an evening telling each other stories in an effort to try and scare the pants off the other, only to have the night take a twisted turn when things go too far.
While in Park City, Daily Dead had the opportunity to chat with both Ruben and Cash about Scare Me, and the duo discussed the inherent challenges that come with making a movie about the art of storytelling, their collaborative process, and how Scare Me delves into the issues of gender politics as well.
Congrats to you both on Scare Me. I just thought the way that you guys explored the idea of the power of storytelling was really interesting.

Auguste and Louis Lumière were two of the pioneers of filmmaking, but you’ve never seen a Lumière brother film like this before. YouTube user Denis Shiryaev is going viral after uploading a fan-made restoration of the Lumière brothers’ 1885 short film “Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat,” presented in 4K and at 60 frames per second. The restoration brings one of the most historic short films of the 19th century firmly into the 21st. The image is so clear it almost makes it appear as if the Lumière brothers shot “Arrival of a Train” on digital. The fan-made restoration was uploaded to YouTube on February 2 and has already amassed over 1.1 million views and counting in less than a week.
“Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat” was shot in 1895 but did not publicly screen for the first time until January 1896. The silent short film runs 50 seconds and depicts a train...

As Netflix reportedly nears a mid-to-high seven-figure deal for “The 40-Year-Old-Version” after its Sundance Film Festival premiere, the talks mark a realization of the streamer’s strongest needs. Netflix, whose business model hinges on viewers always coming back for more, sees potential in the film’s writer-director-producer-star Radha Blank: The acquisition is less about this one film and more about establishing a lasting relationship with a fresh new voice.
Loosely based on Blank’s experiences as a New York playwright, the film won the Sundance Directing Award Saturday. She’s unknown by a mass audience, but Netflix is betting that its 61 million Us subscribers will also respond to her — and potentially create a brand name that it can add to its lineup of exclusive deals like Ryan Murphy, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and Shonda Rhimes. (Netflix declined comment on the impending deal.)

Director Justin Simien, who first broke out at Sundance with 2014’s “Dear White People,” dropped by TheWrap studio at Sundance to discuss his campy horror film “Bad Hair.”
“So ‘Bad Hair’ is a horror satire camp mashup situation about a killer weave and a girl who gets one in 1989 and the costs and the benefits that happen when such a thing transpires,” said Simien. “The idea really came from a conversation about a sub-genre of horror in Korean and Japanese horror films about hair specifically and I felt like there was an American story there to be told that hadn’t been told and specifically one that kind of interrogates the system that kind of forces black women in particular, but all of black culture, to sort of produce value that they themselves can actually capitalize on.”
“I wanted to do this genre because it just it’s a lot of fun.

Hulu is set to acquire Justin Simien’s campy horror film “Bad Hair” out of the Sundance Film Festival, insiders told Variety. The global pact is for $8 million.
The Disney-owned streamer has emerged ahead of numerous bidders, sources said, and has overcome Simien and the filmmaking team’s concerns about debuting with a streamer. There will be some form of theatrical release before the movie heads to the digital platform. Hulu has success with television shows such as “The Handmaid’s Tale,” but it is not well known for backing original features.
It’s the second major deal for Hulu, which blew bidders out of the water with its $17.5 million purchase of “Palm Springs,” a comedy with Andy Samberg that it will release with Neon.
A deal has been rumored for days, but Hulu has repeatedly denied that it was the frontrunner for the film. The pact is closing as Sundance...

There is more than a touch of ‘Buffy‘ Season 6 in the way Romola Garai‘s Midnight-dwelling directorial debut, “Amulet,” finally shakes down — and, I shouldn’t have to say, that’s a compliment. The much-maligned penultimate season of Joss Whedon‘s era-defining TV show has recently come in for gratifying reevaluation as its darker tone, the greater pessimism of its worldview and especially its investigation of a masculinity that in 2002 had scarcely even begun to be described as “toxic,” have proven prescient indeed.

Spoiler Alert: This story includes details about tonight’s series finale of NBC’s The Good Place.
NBC’s The Good Place ended with one last bout of wrestling with philosophical and spiritual issues in its Thursday series finale, striking an uncommonly elegiac — though still jokey — tone for a network sitcom, as it has managed to do throughout its four-season run.
Over the course of the hourlong-plus episode, titled “Whenever You’re Ready” and written and directed by creator Michael Schur, each main character — humans Eleanor (Kristen Bell), Chidi (William Jackson Harper), Tahani (Jameela Jamil) and Jason (Manny Jacinto) — determines they are ready to “walk through the door.” That means they are ready to leave the titular place of eternal existence (though it’s been revealed to be a different kind of end than it seemed when the show premiered in the fall of 2016).

While the Sundance 2020 market started slow, sales started to pick up late Sunday night with “The Night House” and “Herself,” followed by “Ironbark” and “Uncle Frank” on Monday morning. Since then a handful of documentaries have sold, and Andy Sambert’s “Palm Springs” set a new festival sales record at $17.5 million.
A lot of films selected as part of the festival program also already had distribution in place. Others pre-sold before the festival even began: “The Father,” the documentary “Mucho Mucho Amor” and the midnight thriller “His House” have already found homes. We’ll be updating this list with any additional sales as they come in.

‘Into the Deep’ (Photo credit: Sundance Film Festival).
Australian writer-director Emma Sullivan’s true-crime documentary Into the Deep has been praised as more chilling than some of the horror movies which screened in the Sundance Film Festival’s Midnight section.
Commissioned by Netflix and produced by Denmark’s Mette Heide and Aussie Roslyn Walker, the film premiered in the world cinema documentary competition at Sundance.
Sullivan was filming Danish inventor and rocket engineer Peter Madsen for a doco on his space lab when events took a shocking turn.
On August 10 2017 he brutally murdered Swedish journalist Kim Wall on his homemade submarine in the waterways outside Copenhagen. He was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
Among the first reviews, Vanyaland’s Nick Johnston lauded the extensive and genuinely stunning footage that the documentarian filmed over the course of two years, both before the murder and in its immediate aftermath.

‘Relic’.
Natalie Erika James’ debut feature Relic has received rapturous reviews after the world premiere in the Midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival.
Critics praised the Us-born, Japanese-Australian filmmaker’s wholly original approach to the haunted house genre, the emotional impact and the performances of the three leads – Emily Mortimer, Robyn Nevin and Bella Heathcote.
Co-written by James and Christian White, the plot follows Nevin as Edna, the elderly and widowed matriarch of the family who goes missing. Her daughter Kay (Mortimer) and granddaughter Sam (Heathcote) travel to their remote family home to find her. Soon after her return, they discover a sinister presence is haunting the house and taking control of Edna.
Bloody Disgusting’s Meagan Navarro declared: “What begins as a more straightforward yet psychological approach to haunted house fare explodes into full-blown horror in a wholly unexpected way, and Relic marks one audacious debut.

Deals expected to close before end of weekend as market warms up.
Rebecca Hall horror The Night House is among a cluster of Sundance acquisition titles generating heat among buyers as the market awaits the first major on-site deal.
Despite last year’s early fireworks, it is not unusual for deals to take a few days to come in. Until today buyers and other industry sources have remarked on a lack of larger available titles with commercial potential.

At this year’s Sundance, 118 features will make their debut. Here are five hotly anticipated films that will be in the mix and some of the artisans behind them.
Bad Hair (Midnight)
Costume designer Ceci reconnects with Justin Simien (“Dear White People”) on a satirical horror set in 1989 Los Angeles, where ambitious Anna (Elle Lorraine) hopes to be the next on-air talent for a music video TV show. Her new boss, Zora (Vanessa Williams) wants Anna to change her natural hair, and she acquiesces by getting a weave. One problem: The strands have a mind of their own.
Ceci fully developed the look of each individual role down to the smallest detail. “My intention is that the viewer can readily identify, relate or understand who the characters are and the story being told,” she says. “Before Anna gets her first weave, her wardrobe is reflective of her ethnocentric upbringing coupled with her homespun,...

Sundance 2020: The Most Diverse Lineup in History Shows Effort to Reach Underrepresented Communities
The diversity in the 2020 Sundance Film Festival lineup supports the organization’s mission to become increasingly inclusive. In the U.S. Dramatic Competition, 56% of the directors are people of color, a record. By comparison, during the 2017 and 2018 festivals, just 24% of U.S. Dramatic features had a director of color. Among the 66 films and 90 directors in all the competition categories this year, 44% of projects were directed by / 40% of directors are people of color, also an all-time high for the festival.
The outcome reflects the festival’s ongoing efforts to expand its reach as part of its programming process.
“Diversity has been a core component of Sundance’s mission since our inception,” said Kim Yutani, the festival’s Director of Programming. “We’re continually expanding our alliances and partnerships to ensure that we’re engaging communities where they are, and offering support that makes sense, and we’re continually evolving the Institute’s work.

January 2020 marks the 25th anniversary of Richard Linklater’s “Before Sunrise” world premiering at the 1995 Sundance Film Festival. The movie, starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy as two young travelers who meet cute on a train to Vienna and spend the evening together walking around the Austrian city, received glowing reviews from critics and would kickstart one of cinema’s most beloved trilogies. Two sequels followed, each nine years apart: “Before Sunset” (2004) and “Before Midnight” (2013). Fans have spent the last 7 years wondering if a fourth “Before” movie will arrive on schedule in 2022. Linklater and his cast have gone back and forth over the years on a new “Before” film, expressing interest and casting doubt on a possible reunion. In a new oral history of “Before Sunrise” from The New York Times, Hawke and Linklater appear to be warming up to the idea of a fourth film serving as a franchise epilogue.

Stars: Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy, Erni Mangold, Vernon Dobtcheff, Xenia Kalogeropoulou | Written by Richard Linklater, Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy, Kim Krizan | Directed by Richard Linklater
Plaudits to Richard Linklater for his epic Boyhood, famously filmed over many years – a feat one day to be replicated with his Stephen Sondheim adaptation, Merrily We Roll Along. But he kind of already did it with his “Before” Trilogy: Sunrise (1995), Sunset (2004) and Midnight (2013), in each of which we catch a glimpse of a passionate relationship between two lovers at different times in their lives.
Before Sunrise opens with the initial meet-cute between Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy), two twenty-something dreamers lounging on a long-distance train. They have a connection. Not some magical sense of entitlement, but a simple chemistry and a shared worldview. They jump off in Vienna, and then walk the city streets through the night, directionless, talking, kissing, and occasionally arguing.

It’s almost that time of year again: time to pretend like you enjoy spending the holidays with your family… or else.
Fox’s three-night event series The Moodys stars Denis Leary (Rescue Me) as the patriarch of a fractured family that gathers together in Chicago to celebrate the Christmas season. In the first promo — which you can watch above — Leary and Elizabeth Perkins (Weeds) welcome home their three adult kids, played by Francois Arnaud (Midnight, Texas), Jay Baruchel (Man Seeking Woman) and Chelsea Frei (Sideswiped)… but they’re not exactly eager to hang around and trim the tree singing carols.

Nothing like a good ol' fashioned monster movie. After Midnight is the latest film written and co-directed by filmmaker Jeremy Gardner (of The Battery and Tex Montana Will Survive!), produced by fellow genre filmmakers Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead. This collaboration, and the resulting low budget horror flick, feels a bit like the early days of the Duplass Brothers. I remember seeing their early films (like Baghead in 2008) at the Sundance Film Festival. I just wanted them to keep making more, because even though they didn't make the best films, there was a kind of remarkable creativity within their filmmaking. The way they made all these fun films on a tiny budget, using bland throwaway locations and not much else besides their own ingenuity to tell a story on the screen. Sometimes that's all you need, as is the case with After Midnight. After Midnight is a couple of different films...
